Bike Around the Bay – Houston, TX
Bike Around the Bay at Houston, Texas, United States
Still missing the MS150? How about the next best thing – Bike Around the Bay! This is a fantastic, fully supported two-day, 148 mile bicycle ride around Galveston Bay showcasing the natural beauty of Galveston Bay and benefiting the Galveston Bay Foundation. The ride starts in Anahuac, (east of Baytown, west of Beaumont) and continues along a scenic route that includes many fascinating sights and highlights. Riders will spend the night in Galveston where they will enjoy an informal Beach Party at Moody Gardens’ Palm Beach. Day 2 (Sunday, October 17) will bring riders north along the west side of Galveston Bay where they will ultimately finish outside of Baytown, Texas. You get to ride over the Galveston Causeway and take the ferry on your bike… How often do you get to do ‘that’? Since the event is so large we’ll be organized in a “Here’s what we are doing, everyone’s welcome to come” organizational style. Everyone will be responsible for their own accommodations and transportation but fear not, there’ll be plenty of carpooling and pooling of resources to get everyone there. Also, a note that if you want to reserve a hotel room, do it early – they may get booked! http://www.bikearoundthebay.org/

Don’t let the name deceive you – this is our most un-mellow ride of the week. It’s a 2-3hr intermediate to advanced ride. Averaging 17-19mph with speeds in the mid to upper 20s at times. This is NOT a “no-drop” ride and routes vary. Riders should come expecting a challenging road ride and bring the proper equipment. Helmets, clipless shoes, two water bottles, and the experience and tools to change your own flats.

A Break in the Rain – July 28th Bike Ride
According to the weatherman the rain should be moving out for the next few days. I had my doubts today about getting to ride this evening but when I got home from work the streets were dry enough and the clouds broken enough to go ride. With all of the rain the temperature was modest at 86 degrees but the humidity is way up there at 79%. Mostly cloudy skies and a mild 7 mph ESE breeze did make much of an impact on the ride. No other riders were spotted. I still have an opportunity to make 3,100 miles for the year by the 31st.
Today’s ride statistics:
- miles = 23.12
- riding time = 1:32:06
- average pace = 3:59 min/mile
- average speed = 15.1 mph
- max speed = 21.1 mph
- average cadence = 79.8 rpm
- max cadence = 107 rpm
- climb 183 ft., descend 196 ft., max elevation 98 ft.
- July miles 465.01
- YTD miles 3031.67
