P. M. Summer is the former bicycle coordinator of Dallas, Texas, who was removed from his job because of his conservative approach to bicycle facilities. I post the following with his permission:
There is a whole new breed of bicycle professional out there. They aren’t what we usually think of as cyclists, much less traffic engineers or transportation planners. They are most often urban planners and landscape architects, who have become virtual social engineers. They see their job as changing the way dumb old American…
Row, Row, Row My Boat… « Biggie From Texas
by biggie
I have not given up cycling. Although I have not been on my bike in awhile, but I do love cycling so I’ll get back on my bike soon. In fact I have to. Saturday, June 5th is the Texas 4000 Atlas Ride. The Sense Corp Texas 4000 for Cancer is the world’s longest annual Charity bike ride! Their mission is to fight cancer by sharing Hope, Knowledge and Charity across North America through a 4,500 mile bicycle ride from Austin, Texas to Anchorage, Alaska. NO, I am not riding the 4,500 miles from Austin to Alaska. I’ll probably just be doing the 25 mile part. I think it’ll be a great time for all though and certainly a great cause. …

Austin Bike Culture Calendar Events: 5/27/10- 6/2/10
With the Memorial Day weekend upon us, the event calendar is a little light with special events. That doesn’t mean there is not a lot of opportunities to ride your bike. In addition to the monthly Critical Mass, Frankenbike, and Full Moon Cruise, the Thursday Night Social Ride is doing a fundraising ride tonight to send off the bike polo ladies to their first tournament.
Here’s a quick run down of recommended events for the coming week…

Blueberries Are Ready To Pick – May 27th Bike Ride
I got word this morning that the blueberries are ripe and ready to pick. So Saturday we can go pick some and eat more. The farm where we go has several varieties and the big juicy ones are the ones ripening first. So I plan on hitting the bike ride early Saturday so that I can get back for chores and then off to the farm.
Today’s ride was uneventful for me but for one young man and his elderly Chevy truck it was not so fortunate. I was waiting to cross a street and he turned into the street where I was waiting. As he rounded the corner one of the front wheel axles broke and he came to a screeching halt. As I crossed the street I could hear him pounding the fender of the truck loudly.
A north 6 mph breeze, 85 degrees and partly cloudy sky were waiting for the ride. An ozone alert was supposed to be in effect but I did not notice any difference. No other riders were out on my route.
Today’s ride statistics:
- miles = 23.28
- riding time = 1:34:11
- average pace = 4:03 min/mile
- average speed = 14.8 mph
- max speed = 20.5 mph
- average cadence = 79.2 rpm
- max cadence = 106 rpm
- climb 192 ft., descend 249 ft., max elevation 101 ft.
- May miles 542.24
- YTD miles 1942.05
