About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Ripening Blueberries, Shoe Insoles – May 22nd Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 22, 2010 by Rick AnkrumMay 22, 2010

One of my favorite activities is picking blueberries at Moorhead’s Blueberry Farm west of Porter, TX. I like to kid my wife about picking blueberries in March (not really ripe then) until they are ready in late May and early June. Checking their website this morning I saw that maybe they will be ripe enough next weekend. Not one of the treats is that you can eat as much as you can handle for free. The price for the ones left in your bucket is reasonable too. So next weekend (Memorial Day weekend) I look forward to picking and eating.

Earlier this week I wrote about trying some sample insole inserts in my Shimano R075 shoes to lessen the discomfort I was experiencing. I did not cut them properly so I needed to get another pair. Visiting the Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market down the street from where I live I found the 2 oz. Miracle Custom Molding Insoles. I was concerned about the thickness of the Dr. Scholl’s models they had and these were relatively thin and light. I had never heard of these but the thinness and low price of $4.52 made it inexpensive trial. I have to say they made quite a difference. It would be better to size the shoes with these in them but my size 43 shoes and loosening the straps made a good fit. I will be using these going forward.

Today’s ride got an earlier start than most previous Saturday rides. Partly cloudy skies, 91 degrees at the finish and 13 mph S wind (gusts to 18 mph) were waiting for me as I headed out to Montgomery County to the north. There were a couple of other riders spotted today. The shoe insoles made pedaling go smoothly.

As I was riding south on Old Houston Road before FM1314 I saw a person gingerly digging in a cordoned off area (about 40 ft x 40 ft) and I was not sure what was going on. A couple hundred further I saw a Houston Police SUV with a number of officers and 4-wheelers standing off the road with another black SUV. There were several men all dressed in black. I am not sure what was going on since this location is well outside of the Houston city limits. I am wondering if they were looking for something or someone that was buried there. I will watch the newspaper to see if there is any mention.

Today’s ride statistics:

  • miles 50.56
  • riding time 3;22:33
  • average pace = 4:00 min/mile
  • average speed = 15.0 mph
  • max sped = 22.3 mph
  • average cadence = 77.8 rpm
  • max cadence = 115 rpm
  • climb 437 ft., descend 435 ft., max elevation 151 ft.
  • May miles 456.69
  • YTD miles 1856.49

What’s Turning the Spokes on the Net May 21st

Bike to work
Cycling to the job in Houston is getting easier. Now if only it were a bit cooler
HOUSTON CHRONICLE
Long a city famed for its addiction to motor vehicles, even for traveling a few blocks, Houston is steadily pedaling its way toward cyclist-friendly status.

This morning, hundreds of bicycle riders are headed from Memorial Park to City Hall for festivities to mark Bike to Work Day. It’s the culmination of a week dedicated to the concept that high humidity, heat, occasional downpours and drivers who believe they alone belong on roadways can’t deter Houstonians from using muscle-powered personal transit. …

Ride of Silence
by Pit
The day before yesterday I took part in the Ride of Silence in San Antonio and must say it was not what I had expected. On the one hand, as far as I know, the person to lead the ride and having the maps of the route never showed up, and, on the other hand, when someone else took over leading it, the ride can only have looked as a leisurely group ride through downtown San Antonio. I really think the public should have been made aware of what it was about. And since, even with way too few riders [to my estimate not more than 70] taking part, it still proved difficult to stay together, I really think this ride should have had a police…

City considers ban on cyclists in Industrial areas
from corpuscycling.com
As the city takes another step towards a safe passing ordinance to give bicyclists more room on the road, the Traffic Engineering Department is looking into complaints and a possible ban on cyclists on other roads. The problem is the areas they plan to ban go right through a regular cycling route.

“This is our main regular route,” said cyclist Larry Donaldson, “We take this road to Nueces River and back out to Lamar Park which is about 42-43 miles.”

It’s a route Larry Donaldson is very familiar with. He leads a large group of Corpus Christi…

Peru Parts Project Update

Texbiker.net Posted on May 21, 2010 by Rick AnkrumMay 21, 2010

From this week’s issue of RBR’s 05/20/10 Newsletter:

Lon Haldeman says a box of cycling goodies arrives almost every day for PAC Tour’s Peru Parts Project. RBR publicized it in newsletter No. 439. “We’ll be moving about 300 pounds (136 kg) of donated equipment into the jungle for the bike racers,” Lon tells us. “The riders in Peru are looking forward to our arrival and they want to thank everyone for helping them get better equipment.” Lon will deliver the gear next fall when he leads another PAC Tour Peruvian cycling adventure. If you have equipment or clothing you no longer use (who doesn’t?), PAC Tour will be happy to recycle it. Shoes, pedals, saddles, helmets, drivetrain components (even “obsolete” 7- or 8-speed equipment), pumps, bottles, shorts, jerseys — if you don’t need it, a rider in Peru will love it. Ship to: PAC Tour, 202 Prairie Pedal Lane, Sharon, WI  53585 USA. Thanks!
