About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

21 MPH Headwind, 92 Degrees – May 23rd Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 23, 2010 by Rick AnkrumMay 23, 2010

[iframe http://connect.garmin.com:80/activity/embed/34276241 465 548]

Today was a shorter ride to fit with my schedule. It did not take long to experience the 21 mph wind gusts along with the 15 SSE base wind. Temperature was a nice 95 degrees. Looks like summer weather is quickly approaching. The SciGuy blog reminds us that hurricane season starts next week. Already there has been an “invest” which sometimes is the birth of a hurricane. This particular one has not produced anything though.

No bikers out today that I saw. I will be watching stage 15 of the Gira d’Italia where the stage ends atop Mont Zocolan. This will be a very tough stage. No Mont like that around SE Texas though.

Today’s ride statistics:

  • miles = 16.77
  • riding time = 1:08:21
  • average pace = 4:05 min/mile
  • average speed = 14.7 mph
  • max speed = 14.7 mph
  • average cadence =  78.8 rpm
  • max cadence = 105 rpm
  • climb 140 ft., descend 118 ft., max elevation 109 ft.
  • May miles 473.45
  • YTD miles 1873.26

Texas Bicycling Blog and News Roundup for May 22nd

24 Hours in the Canyon | The Wheel Brothers – Cycling in Texas

We were lucky enough to catch up with Ryan Parnell of 24 Hours in the Canyon to ask some questions about their upcoming event happening on June 5th-6th at Palo Duro Canyon.

How long has the event been around and how did it start?

First event was in 2007 – I went to the inaugural LIVESTRONG Summit in Austin and they challenged us to do something to help cancer patients in our community.

What was the motivation behind starting this event and who benefits from it?

I was prematurely diagnosed with lymphoma in 2006.  Later, it was determined that what I have is spleen tissue left over from a previous injury.  Since then I have dedicated myself to helping patients diagnosed with cancer.  The Don and Sybil Harington Cancer Center receives 90% of our proceeds and the Lance Armstrong Foundation receives 10%…

24 Hours of Erwin Park
06/05/2010 10:00 AM to 06/06/2010 10:00 AM
24 hours of cycling?  All solo?  Wow!  With a team?  Still, very Wow!  Terr Firma is hosting a 24 hour cycling event at Erwin Park in McKinney.

We have to ask ourselves if the cyclists in this event are dedicated, special, crazy – or a little bit of all three.  I have to go with the latter.  This event should be a great one in which to participate and just as good for us wannabe’s to watch.  There are several categories…

San Antonio to El Paso TX 2010: Lytle to Uvalde: Pathfinder’s …
Indeed, the paved road out of Lytle initially led us through a quiet countryside.

However, further down the highway, the surface of the back roads changed considerably. I could tell Carl, the Pathfinder was unusually taken aback.

I was not going to elaborate on a wrong turn that added six miles to our ride before we even got to Highway 90 near Hondo. I had after all, added a few more miles in my determination to see the ruins of Old D’Hanis.

However, Carl was itching to defend his reputation as Pathfinder, so here is his account. I will preface his remarks by acknowledging that finding the shortest, but adequate route out of Lytle and through Medina county to Highway 90…
