Daily News Roundup May 16th – Texas Bicycling
Pedal Pushers: Hamilton Hill-Aceous 100
by Roy and Christine
“What a hometown should be” reads the welcome-to-Hamilton sign, population a little under 3,000. “What a bike tour should be” would be a good motto for the Hamilton General Hospital sponsors. The roads were very good, the traffic was very light, the routes were varied: 10K; 20, 30, 41 miles; 100K; and 79 miles. The Hamilton tour was a breath of fresh air in several respects. Every once in a while one wants a tour that has home town hospitality, a quaint town, a unique start/finish area, …
This is not Texas bicycle racing but I did like the picture from the Amgen Tour of California. Maybe some day there will be a Tour of Texas.

Drop, Drop, Flash Flood, Spells Drought Relief; May 16th Bike Ride
As I have noted before, East Harris County was near drought conditions. Thanks to rain Friday evening and Saturday the drought has been pushed back. Why this relates to biking is that the Saturday morning rains canceled the Houston area Special Olympics bicycle competition at Memorial Park. My niece was scheduled to ride in the 1K and 5K races. We were on our way to the park when we got word. It is touching to see the effort and commitment these athletes put forth in the competition. I had planned on posting some pictures.
Mostly cloudy today, temperatures in the mid-80’s and a light 5 mph N wind made for an enjoyable ride. The rain washed away some of the road debris as well as some pollen. Only a couple of other riders were out during my ride that I saw.
Today’s ride Statistics:
- miles = 25.33
- riding time = 1:40:56
- average pace = 3:59 min/mile
- average speed = 15.1 mph
- max speed = 20.9 mph
- average cadence = 80.7 rpm
- max cadence = 107 rpm
- climb 175 ft., descend 192, max elevation 108 ft.
- May miles 313.38
- YTD miles 1713.19
