About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Daily News Roundup May 13th – Texas Bicycling

Texbiker.net Posted on May 13, 2010 by Rick AnkrumMay 13, 2010

This will not take place on this Saturday’s ride! (From Giro d’Italia and Graham Watson). I am watching this daily on channel 39.2 in Houston.

Giro d'Italia Stage 5

Dear Dr. Mirkin: Should average bicycle riders ride with their heads as low as possible, as racers do?
(from the May 16th Dr. Gabe Mirkin’s Fitness and Health e-Zine)
Probably not.  A study from Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland shows that “aerodynamic position” (with the head down near the handlebars) causes bicycle riders to tire earlier when they ride fast (European Journal of Applied Physiology, March 2010 and January 2006).  Researchers compared how quickly cyclists tired during high-intensity cycling…

Southern tier ride: Day 21: The first leg of Texas completed!
from www.crazyguyonabike.com
We have now completed the first leg of our traverse of Texas and are taking a rest day in Del Rio….which I haven’t even had a chance to explore yet. The next leg includes the “hill country of Texas” and the weather is threatening a week of thunderstorms, so Gary and I will be splitting up. There is a flatter route through San Antonio that will be quicker and suits Gary’s agenda better. I will head for the hills and find out how well my tent really works! Before leaving Alpine on Monday I shipped 5 lbs back home and now I feel much better…

Clouds Threaten But No Rain Drops; May 13th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 13, 2010 by Rick AnkrumMay 13, 2010

As I have written earlier east Harris County is rapidly approaching drought conditions. It is so severe that the Texas Forest Service has moved fire fighters to the area to be ready for brush  fires. The clouds tried to send some rain on the drive home from work but I could count the drops that landed on my windshield. I almost hesitated on riding this evening but I figured maybe my ride would cause some rain to fall. No such luck. With the heavy clouds the temperature was in the low 80’s and the wind was a solid 13 mph from the ESE, the typical direction and speed for this time of the year. No other riders were out that I saw. This weekend has a slightly higher chance of rain so we will see if it makes it. My yard is starting to dry out. With the City of Houston raising water rates to the price of gold I need rain instead of sprinklers.

Today’s riding statistics:

  • miles = 20.44
  • riding time = 1:26:45
  • average pace = 4:15 min/mile
  • average speed = 14.1 mph
  • max speed = 20.2 mph
  • average cadence = 75.4 rpm
  • max cadence = 101 rpm
  • climb 226 ft., descend 132 ft., max elevation 76 ft.
  • May miles 288.05
  • YTD miles 1687.85
