About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Wind Alert, 25-30 MPH. May 12th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 12, 2010 by Rick AnkrumMay 12, 2010

The weather service issued a wind advisory for today through 7:00 PM. I was out riding at that time and can confirm that the wind was 25 to 30 mph. Going across the McKay Causeway over Lake Houston was exciting particularly when I rode over the openings where the water passed through. At times I had to lean into the wind to compensate for the force pushing the bike in the other direction. This was intensified whenever a vehicle drove by and temporarily blocked the wind and then moved out the way to allow the wind to come back. Amidst this I met a rider on a “fixie” with the narrow straight handlebars. I imagine the short bars made steering in the wind a challenge. While the wind was high the temperature was a mild 88 degrees and mostly cloudy.

Today’s ride statistics:

  • miles = 23.23
  • riding time = 1:36:27
  • average pace = 4:09 min/mile
  • average speed = 14.5 mph
  • average cadence = 76.4 rpm
  • max cadence = 101 rpm
  • climb 279 ft., descend 262 ft., max elevation 98 ft.
  • May miles 267.60
  • YTD miles 1667.41

BRUCE MCLAREN: Waste not, want not
by San Angelo Standard Times
I don’t know if the news photo of all the bicycles being trashed at the Great American Cleanup bothered you, but it bothered me. At one time these sorts of items were repaired and made available to kids whose families could not afford a bicycle. Whatever happened to re-cycling?

My parents survived the Great Depression and, having been born not long after it ended, I became a came to understand the importance of the old saying, “Waste not, want not.” If my folks were alive today, I am sure they would cringe…

The 2010 Cross Country Cycling Adventure: Days 17 and 18 Bandera …
by Tony DeLellis
I’ve been in Texas for a long time and I still have a day and a half to get into Louisiana.  I’m starting to pick up the dialect and I think I may come back home with a bit of an accent. It hasn’t been easy learning to speak Texas.  I was at a Walmart yesterday and asked a clerk where the sun screen was. She told me it was over yonder. I just stared at her. She could probably tell from my…

How to Meet 11 Strangers, May 11th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 11, 2010 by Rick AnkrumMay 11, 2010

Last Tuesday I was selected as a juror for rather high profile trial in the 232nd State District Court. When this happened I almost instantly was connected to eleven other people I had never seen or heard of before. Over the course of the trial I learned much about the trial evidence and the eleven other jurors. Sometimes it is surprising what people will tell when you share enough time together and you are not allowed to talk about what brings you together. In addition to this the stress builds up as the trial moves to a climax when the jury must make a decision. Once the jury has begun deliberations sometimes the personalities of the jurors can clash. In the end if the jury reaches the verdict there is a relaxation. The jurors then depart to probably never meet again, the job is completed.

In this setting a bike ride was in order after I returned home and talked to my wife about all that had transpired. While the court room was tense the bike ride was relaxing. A stiff breeze, 18 mph and 25 mph gusts, 82 degrees and mostly cloudy greeted me as I hit the road. Add a dose of humidity and you have a warm ride.

Today’s ride statistics:

  • miles = 21.20
  • riding time = 1:28:58
  • average pace = 4:12 min/mile
  • average speed = 14.3 mph
  • max speed = 19.5 mph
  • average cadence = 77.0 rpm
  • max cadence = 104 rpm
  • climb 219 ft., descend 159 ft., max elevation 76 ft.
  • May miles 244.37
  • YTD miles 1644.18

Armadillo Hill Country Classic 2010
from Mike’s Bike Blog
The Dillo has a special place in my heart, it was my first century ride and each year the family gets out for the Kids & Family ride (2009 report). It’s a great value for $15 the entire family rides and gets the t-shirts and goodie bags. The only downside is that it’s in Bertram, which is a little further than the regular start of Liberty Hill. This year it was going to be only Jack & Ethan accompanying me, Zeb had a soccer game so Jennifer would take him to his game while we rode. …
