About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

People Watching at Valero, April 17th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 17, 2010 by Rick AnkrumApril 17, 2010

I must be the only bike rider in southeast Texas not riding the BP MS150. I did not see any other riders this afternoon during my ride. I did see many wildflowers but no Bluebonnets. Indian Paint Brush and a yellow flower along with some light lavender ones. With a ESE 14 mph wind the BP MS150 riders should have had an easier ride. PedalHouston posted a picture of some people at the lunch stop around 9:34 AM on Twitter. In times past this was at Bellville. I do not know if that is where they are these days. That is an early lunch. While I was at my rest stop at a Valero station I was watching the people come and go. Interesting mix of people. One large man asked how my day was and said he wished he could do what I was doing. A couple walked slowly from their car at the pumps 50-60 away from the store went inside and when they came out the lady picked up two 24 packs of Dr. Pepper and struggled to their car. The man walked slowly behind her not offering to help.

Today’s ride statistics:

  • miles = 46.18
  • riding time = 3:02:01
  • average pace = 3:56 min/mile
  • average speed = 15.2 mph
  • max speed = 21.0 mph
  • average cadence = 79.3 rpm
  • max cadence = 108 rpm
  • climb 226 ft., descend 233 ft.
  • April miles 334.47
  • YTD miles 1221.23

Nice Weather Day and Not Taxing, April 15th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 15, 2010 by Rick AnkrumApril 15, 2010

Even though today was tax day the weather was not taxing. Well, there was one thing taxing: the strong ESE wind at 16 mph and the 26 mph gusts. Temperature was not an issue at 74 degrees. I saw a couple of other riders and one zoomed past me as I was crossing the McKay Causeway over Lake Houston. I think I was moving but he went by like I was not. Rain was threatening at times during the day but none was in sight for the ride this evening. This weekend the BP MS150 will be dominating the biking news and the roads west and northwest of Houston to Austin. Rain could be a problem for the riders.

Today’s ride statistics:

  • miles = 23.17
  • riding time = 1:35:43
  • average pace = 4:08 min/mile
  • average speed = 14.5 (the wind was the problem)
  • max speed 20.1 mph
  • average cadence = 76.9 rpm
  • max cadence = 106 rpm
  • climb 224 ft., descend 254 ft.
  • April miles 288.30
  • YTD miles 1175.05
