About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Partly Cloudy Skies, Smooth Bike Ride for April 11th

Texbiker.net Posted on April 11, 2010 by Rick AnkrumApril 12, 2010

Beautiful spring weather made today’s ride a great one. A temperature of 80 degrees when I got back plus a light 7 mph breeze was much better than yesterday’s weather with no surprises. The Mercier Serpens road bike was more than up to the task. The boats were out on Lake Houston but I did not see any water skiers. I suspect the water might be a little too cool.

Today’s ride statistics:

  • miles = 22.62
  • riding time = 1:28:46
  • average pace 3:55 min/mile
  • max speed = 20.7
  • average speed = 15.3 mph
  • average cadence = 80 rpm
  • max cadence = 107 rpm
  • climb 181 ft., descend 192 ft.
  • April miles 219.67
  • YTD miles 1106.42

The Weatherman Missed It Today, April 10th Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 10, 2010 by Rick AnkrumApril 10, 2010

The best laid plans can get turned upside down when the weatherman tells you one thing and other things happen. I sat at the breakfast table reading the weather forecast and right there it said no rain until late next week. My wife needed some yard work done so we went outside to get started. After 30 minutes or so she said it was sprinkling and I said it isn’t supposed to be doing that. Over the next half hour it rained lightly. This delayed the yard work which in turn delayed my planned bike ride. After awhile we finished what we could and I did some other chores waiting for the rain to move out and the streets to dry. At 2:57 I left on my ride. It was cooler than predictd and damper. The weatherman lost this one. With a temperature of 69 degrees and a cool ESE wind at 14 mph the ride was not as warm as I prefer. Maybe it will be warmer (and drier) tomorrow.

Today’s ride statistics:

  • miles = 45.92
  • riding time = 3:05:26
  • average pace  4:02 min/mile
  • average speed = 14.9 mph
  • max speed = 20.7 mph
  • average cadence = 79.8 rpm
  • max cadence = 110 rpm
  • climb 481 ft., descend 306 ft.
  • April miles = 197.05
  • YTD miles = 1083.80

BILL CULLINS: Groups can lead you to faster, farther rides
by San Angelo Standard Times
With the return of warmer weather and longer days, the local group rides have started up again. At last count, there were at least nine group rides per week for local cyclists to choose from.

I do my own version of a group ride. I just pedal along, talk to (and answer) myself, and thus a solitary excursion becomes a “group ride of two.” During really hard or long workouts, a third little voice appears in my head, which makes it a group of three.

All jokes aside, taking part in real group rides is an effective way to…

Ride for Heroes | The Wheel Brothers – Cycling in Texas
by admin
As most of you, the Wheelbrothers attend cycling events all around North Texas.  However, most of the time, we just pay our $30, sign our form and collect the T-Shirt.   Outside of the MS-150, most of us never really stop to think ‘WHAT’ the event is all about.  We might catch a glimpse here or there – but – overall its guesswork at best.

In order to find out a bit more, we are interviewing folks about some of our favorite races…

Charley and Kamala in Tandem: Muenster TX
by tumbleweedland
The day’s going to be a long one. We’re setting out to do 65 miles. No problem. The hills are more shallow and we have a tailwind–first one in a week. We’re putting the miles behind us, rolling and pedaling hard. Sometimes we work just as hard as when we’re bucking a wind or climbing mountains, but it feels wonderful to spin for speed. Twenty miles out from Paris, the symbol for the end of the day, we change counties. Now changing counties…
