About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

April 6th Ride Report: Cooler, Legs Recovered Some

Texbiker.net Posted on April 6, 2010 by Rick AnkrumApril 6, 2010

The wind was brisk this evening. Gusts to 22 mph and a steady 14 mph out there made the 74 degrees seem cooler than it really was. Add in the overcast skies and cool was in the air. According to one of the Houston Chronicle’s weather bloggers, tomorrow’s cool front will bring the last 40 degree temperatures until November.

Normally I take Tuesday’s off but I pleaded my case with my wife that the rain on Wednesday will stop my riding so I needed to ride this evening instead.

This seemed like a good plan until I got home from my ride and attempted to upload my ride data into SportsTrack so I could generate my usual ride map and charts. I checked the Garmin 305’s screen when I pulled into the driveway and everything looked like it was working. I should have written the data down because when I started to upload the last date of data was yesterday’s ride. Nothing was imported and nothing was in the history file on the 305 for 4/6/2010. The only real piece of data that I remembered was the miles: 19.18. Searching the Garmin support site did not help much but Google eventually showed a similar situation from another rider. I followed the instructions to do a master reset. Now I just have to wait for the next ride to see if the 305 is back to recording and exporting data. So, no map or charts for today’s ride.

‘Our little corner of bicycle heaven’
“Bicycling is one of the least expensive ways to get to work. Maintenance and upkeep of bicycles is relatively inexpensive and food is the only fuel needed!”
– Bicycle Commuter’s Handbook, prepared for the North Texas Clean Air Coalition
It may be just an excuse, but I’ve heard people say that, sure, they’d commute to work by bicycle if only there were a place to take a shower and a secure storage area for the bike.
Bernie Scheffler hopes to remedy those problems — at least for bike commuters who work in downtown Fort Worth or take the train from there to Dallas — when he opens his new bike shop, Trinity Bicycles, on April 16. …

Today’s Ride Report; Heavy Legs and Some Head Wind

Texbiker.net Posted on April 5, 2010 by Rick AnkrumApril 5, 2010

I took Easter Sunday off to recover from my back-to-back 40 mile ride days expecting to be rested for today’s ride. My expectations were more than the reality. Thanks to a 15 mph ESE wind my legs felt like they were pedaling squares. Partly cloudy skies and a nice temperature of 79 degrees made for another wise good ride.

Today’s ride statistics:

  • miles = 23.26
  • riding time = 1:36:42
  • average pace = 4:29 min/mile
  • average speed = 14.4 mph
  • max speed = 20.9 mph
  • average cadence = 77.4 rpm
  • max cadence = 106 rpm
  • climb 208 ft., descend 142 ft.
  • April miles = 109.48
  • YTD miles = 996.23

Daily News Roundup April 4th – Texas Bicycling

Texbiker.net Posted on April 4, 2010 by Rick AnkrumApril 4, 2010

EARLY SEASON SHAKE-DOWN
from Bicycle.net | Attitude is Everything by System6
Saturday morning was fine time for a killing.

It being early April, in much of the country riding and racing is still hit-and-miss.  You get a beautiful day, but it arrives on Wednesday.  Then by Saturday it’s blowing wind and cold rain.  For those of us primarily chasing fun and fitness and hoping mostly to make a good showing at the weekly shop ride or local crit, it’s mentally challenging this far into the year to face yet another indoor spin session.  Great weather teases us — just not when we can take advantage of it. …
