About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Good Friday; Good Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 2, 2010 by Rick AnkrumApril 2, 2010

Earlier in the week I decided to take today off from work. The weather looked like it would be okay if I went riding in the morning and got back by noon time. There was a chance of rain in the late afternoon to early evening. I left home at 9:09 and got back at 12:22. Clouds had formed but the rain was not in sight. As I write this at 5:10 PM no rain has materialized yet though the clouds have rolled in. Today’s route includes a loop through Roman Forest. I used to go this direction all the time but I had dropped this loop when road construction was in the area. Now that the construction has moved further north I can spend some time on this route. In my absence a number of new homes have sprouted up. Azaleas are in full bloom. The bright pink blooms fill many people’s front yard flower gardens. I should have taken my camera.

Temperature was around 70 degrees but there was a stiff SSE wind at 15 mph which made the return home an effort. My conditioning still has way to go. At my one rest stop I talked to a person I know who had not seen my Mercier Serpens bike. He thought it was very light. He was impressed with the amount of carbon fiber. In years gone he had rode in a number of bike rides. He did the HHH one year and the Alamo Challenge.

Today’s ride statistics:

  • miles = 40.11
  • riding time = 2:46:50
  • average pace = 4:10 min/mile
  • average speed = 14.4, max speed = 19.6
  • average cadence = 75 rpm
  • max cadence = 104 rpm
  • climb 350 ft, descend 407 ft.
  • YTD miles = 926.86

‘Tour Dallas’ a cycling event for the whole family! | The Wheel …

A north Texas celebrity
Bikin Mike
We caught up with local biking celebrity ‘Bikin Mike’,  who is the founder and ‘brains’ behind the ‘Tour Dallas’ event.  It’s important to note that it’s ‘Tour Dallas’ which is something you DO and not ‘Tour of Dallas’ a thing or an event.

He was gracious enough, to let us bounce off a few questions of him:

How did the ‘Tour’ come into existence and what goal are your trying to accomplish?

I felt like there were no bike rides for the casual cyclist. 80% of all bikes sold…

Day 56 – Rest day in Schulenburg, Texas: Let’s go to Schulenburg, Texas – me and Irene and the bikes . . .
Friday March 26, 2010
This has been a good day. The Schulenburg RV park is not scenic. It’s fairly close quarters, just south of I-10 and right next to Hwy. 77 – but it’s a good place. We are surrounded by RV’s, which we’ve learned can be a desirable thing. Most people retreat inside at night and it’s peaceful. The toilets, showers and laundry are mostly ours and beautifully clean. The weather was still chilly last night – in the mid-40’s, but the sleeping wasn’t too bad. Today was a beautiful sunny day in the 70’s. …

Pace Bend Race (Mountain Bike). -  03-29-2010
from www.texasphotoforum.com
So, I helped out with a race over the weekend. Helped fill water bottles on day, the race day set out to get some pictures. Few things I learned. Be sure to apply sunblock. I did but it was already after I noticed I was getting a little burned. …

Pace Bend Race

After only a few weeks, it’s clear peopleforbikes.org has hit on something pretty powerful.

So far, more than 6,500 people have signed our pledge in support of biking — and our numbers keep growing every hour. Riders across the country are showing that Americans of all walks of life think that bicycling is important and warrants further support from our leaders.

We’ve got big plans to build this movement, but we also know the best ideas will come from riders like you. As one of the first people to sign the pledge, your opinion on how we shape the future of peopleforbikes.org is important to us.

Benefits of High-Intensity Interval Training.
To be competitive, all athletes must train very intensely some of the time.  New research from McMaster University in Canada shows that short term, high-intensity interval training  on a bike can also provide you with all the health and fitness benefits of exercising less intensely for a much longer period of time (The Journal of Physiology, March 2010).  Subjects used a standard stationary bicycle and performed a workout of ten 1-minute sprints with a 1-minute rest between each at 95 percent of their maximal…
