About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Peopleforbikes.org
Uniting a million voices to improve the future of biking.

We’re all united by a shared passion: bikes. Bikes keep us healthy, carry us from point A to point B, save us from high gas prices, and make our air cleaner and our roads less congested. Bikes fill our lives with adventure and excitement, relaxing our minds and energizing our souls.

Peopleforbikes.org is dedicated to channeling that passion to improve the future of bicycling. Our goal is to gather a million names of support, to speak with one, powerful voice—to make bicycling safer, more convenient and appealing for everyone.

Weekly race series, group rides help Austin’s bike racing scene …
by admin
Here in Austin, home of perhaps the most powerful pair of quads in the world, plenty of bicyclists are trying to find out.

They gather for weekly hammerhead training rides that depart area coffeehouses and bike shops. They line up for a 33-week bike race series staged on a track in East Austin. They drop $3,000 to $5,000 on road racing bikes that weigh considerably less than the tricycle you had as a kid. …

Texas  Tidbits: Bike Out Hunger Ride
by Dallas Baptist Standard
Texas Baptists have planned a 445-mile bicycle ride to raise money for the Texas Baptist Offering for World Hunger and to raise awareness about how Texans can be involved in fighting hunger and making the state food-secure by 2015. The April 19-24 Bike Out Hunger event begins at First Baptist Church in Ballinger and concludes at The Fellowship of San Antonio. Riders are welcome to participate for the entire trek or for just one leg of the journey. To find out more or to pledge a donation for a specific rider, visit http://texasbaptists.com/bikeout/.

Sunday Morning RIDE – It’s hard out there for a hater. | Austin …
from Austin Texas Bike Stuff
It’s what made the Bicycle Crazies stomp their little feet when Tony Kornheiser ran his head. And until we let go of it, we’re nothing more than a bunch of ideological cheerleaders, shouting at each other. How productive is that? … This is a 25-30 mile ride over typical Central Texas terrain. If this is consistent with your riding experience, or is perhaps slightly more challenging than what you’re accustomed to, you should have no problem going the distance. …

Cycling notebook: Rough times for Tour du Rouge
By DALE ROBERTSON – Houston Chronicle
The Tour du Rouge is a very different kind of bike ride, and that’s both a good thing and a bad thing.

Because it takes six days, traveling this spring from the Bush Intercontinental Airport Sheraton hotel parking lot to New Orleans via Beaumont, Sulphur, Abbeville, Morgan City and Gonzalez, it gives the Walter Mitty cyclist a taste of what a pro stage race…

The Hidden Peddler: last stop in TX
by Pedal4Peace
Hi, everyone,
Here we are in Liberty, TX, a little off the bike route but we had a hard time finding an RV park anywhere closer.  The bikers went 87 miles today from Navasota to the intersection of 105 and 146.  Paula, Katy and I had scouted out one place but it was really primitive and in a rather muddy field.  Katy found this park on-line and so we drove the 15 miles south to Liberty.  It isn’t great (no bathrooms or showers), but has electric, water, and sewer…

Back on the Road Again, Clear Skies and a Strong Wind

Texbiker.net Posted on March 25, 2010 by Rick AnkrumMarch 25, 2010

After a two day interruption I managed to get a ride in tonight even though I stopped on the way home for the Clear WiMax blogger party at Dave & Buster’s. I have been waiting several years for this service to arrive in Houston and it looks like it goes live next week or so. So I got a little later start on the bike ride tonight.

The clear skies are a welcome sight after yesterday’s drizzle all day. With 61 degrees and a NNW wind at 14 mph dressing properly was again an issue. For a change I got it right: long sleeve fleece jersey over a T-shirt, Pearl Izumi windbreaker jacket, leg warmers, long fingered gloves. I was comfortable the whole ride. My road bike (Mercier Serpens Ltd 2.0) was up to the challenge.

Tonight’s ride statistics:

  • miles = 16.21
  • ride time = 1:07:41
  • average pace = 4.11 min/mile
  • average speed = 14.4
  • average cadence = 76.7
  • max cadence = 109
  • climb = 161 ft., descend = 177 ft.
  • YTD miles = 784.15

Charts and map for the ride.

Local bike racers like racing community, competition
by Austin 360
Greg Hall got into bike racing 25 years ago as a way to lose weight. He stuck with it because he loves Austin’s cycling community.

‘It’s the team aspect of it,’ says Hall, 51, who works as a programmer for the Austin Water Utility. ‘I have so many friends through the sport.’

Now a Cat 3 intermediate racer, Hall still rides with the team that he started with, Violet Crown Sports Association. He rides an Austin-made Crumpton cycle that weighs just 16 pounds. …

Day 22 – Charity Cycle USA Journey Blog
San Diego to New York unassisted cycle in aid of the British Heart Foundation – Sponsor Us Now – www.justgiving.com/sandiego-to-nyc-cycle
Well as planned, today has been nice and easy. Due to the the distances between towns, we could either have done 25 miles or best part of 100, so we opted to do just 25, taking today almost as a rest day.

We set off late, about 11am, as we knew it would take us 2 hours at the most. The first 2 miles or so involved cycling through some very shifty looking neighbourhoods, and it looked a bit like ‘dog territory’. We cycled very slowly as dogs seem to take a dislike to fast moving things, however it didn’t take long for one to briefly chase us. Fortunately it only seemed intent on protecting it’s owners property and lost interest after about 10-20 meters when it realised that in fact we weren’t there to rob the house. …
