About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

David on the Southern Tier

By David Jelmini | www.crazyguyonabike.com

Day 15: El Paso to Fort Handcock. 75’ climbing, 3:20 hrs in the saddle. First day with ACA group, so far so good.

Sunday October 3, 2021, 45 miles (72 km) – Total so far: 733 miles (1,180 km) It was great to finally start this ride. The anticipation and anxiety have been high for so long now. Started the day off with nice weather and flat roads. I eventually met up with Greg and Larry and rode together for a while before stopping to help Mattie fix a flat.

Day 16: Fort Handcock to Van Horn, Tx, 2,000’ of climbing, 5:30 hrs in saddle. Not as bad as expected

Monday October 4, 2021, 74 miles (119 km) – Total so far: 807 miles (1,299 km) Started the day off riding with Greg and Larry from Loveland, CO. We have about the same riding style and speed so it worked well. Can’t tell you how much more pleasant it is to ride with “people “ for a change, not so lonely. The day started off with perfect weather as we meandered through the back road toward the interstate. We left camp last since Larry was on cleanup duty. Eventually caught up with people as the day progressed, moving on and off I-10, or along a frontage road. Started to feel some cramps coming on so Larry gave me some magic pills, basically potassium, which did the trick. …

Day 17: Van Horn to Fort Davis, 2150’ of climbing, 6:42 hrs in the saddle. Hard day of head winds

Tuesday October 5, 2021, 80 miles (129 km) – Total so far: 887 miles (1,427 km) The good news is we all agreed to change the route so we could eliminate 2,000’ of climbing. The new route also kept us off I-10 for 45 miles. Started off with light head winds, which was expected, that moved to moderate head winds through out the day. Highway 90 also let us experience Texas chip seal roads, which was not pleasant. …

Day 18: Layover in Fort Davis

Wednesday October 6, 2021 Spent the day relaxing, walked the town, which took about 20 minutes. Took a few photos.

Southern Tier in 2 parts

By Winnifred Homer-Smith | www.crazyguyonabike.com

Del Rio to Camp Wood

Monday October 4, 2021, 79 miles (127 km) – Total so far: 1,053 miles (1,695 km) Finally a day on the bike! I headed out after breakfast. I saw the ACA route stays away from 90 as it goes through town & thought that was great. Well, the alternate route may have been better, but it was 2 lanes each way with no shoulder at all, and I left in the midst of rush hour (or at least, the busier time of day) so I was very glad it was less than 2 miles. One guy in a bright blue car got behind me, swerved into the next lane, and almost rear-ended the car right in front of him when it actually stopped for a red light. Fun? No!

But I was soon back on 90 where there were huge shoulders. And very good pavement, too, for about 11 miles. Then back to chip seal of various levels of annoying. I stayed on 90 for about 30 miles. Plenty of cars & trucks, no traffic problems. There was one area that …

Video: Attorneys representing 6 cyclists hit in Waller County conducting their own civil investigation

Re’Chelle Turner | www.click2houston.com

WALLER COUNTY – On Wednesday, attorneys Charlie Thomas and Peter Wilborn, Bike Law Director Rachael Maney, and Bike Houston Executive Director Joe Cutrufo held a virtual press conference to discuss the ongoing investigation involving six injured cyclists.

The cyclists were hit by a 16-year-old while training for the Ironman in Waller County. The crash happened on Business 290 East on Sept. 25.

The attorneys representing the cyclist said they are conducting their own civil investigation into what happened.

During the virtual conference, attorney …

WHEELS OF LOVE: Houston cyclist Elise Sheppard takes tzedakah on the road

By AARON HOWARD | jhvonline.com

A casual conversation with a gentleman at the 2019 AIPAC Policy Conference in Washington introduced Houstonian Elise Sheppard to the Wheels of Love charity ride. Sheppard is a bicycling enthusiast, a serious, committed and regular rider. She also loves Israel.

“I had been looking for a way to get back to Israel,” Sheppard told the JHV. “Wheels of Love combined the opportunity to experience Israel on a bicycle, meet cycling enthusiasts from all over the world and pray in a cycling minyan. Plus, the 2019 Wheels of Love ride was scheduled back to back with the Houston Federation’s trip to Israel.”

Sheppard enjoyed the ride so much that she could hardly wait to …

Circle Trail Centipede Encounters With Prickly Pear Cactus

Durango Texas | durangotexas.blogspot.com

Today my bike decided to take me north on the Circle Trail further than I have gone in a long long time.

About a mile north of Hamilton Park the Circle Trail comes to the Prickly Pear Cactus Orchard you see above. This orchard appears slightly south of where the Circle Trail crosses under Holliday Road, which you can also see in the photo above.

Going north on the Circle Trail eventually passes under a couple freeways, making for a lot of cement overhead. Soon thereafter the Circle Trail enters an undeveloped zone making it seem as if one has left the city and is out in the wild country.

Eventually the Circle Trail returns to civilization, around the point where the …

Good Legs, Great Weather, Other Cyclists Out Too

Texbiker.net Posted on October 7, 2021 by Rick AnkrumOctober 7, 2021

Beautiful biking weather continued with a clear blue sky, light wind, and moderate temperature. For the 6th time this year I rode on my “Atascocita South – Walden – Huffman” route covering 35.08 miles on my Canyon Endurace bike. The week total moved to 134.82 miles and October to 197.16 miles. 2021 YTD totals 7,806 miles. 2021 now leads 2020 YTD by 217 miles. The ride started at 10:08 AM and finished at 12:47 PM. I wasn’t expecting to see other cyclists but two crossed my path. One in Walden and the other at FM 2100 and Old Atascocita Road.

10-7-2021 YTD Bike Rides Summary Today's Route
10-7-2021 YTD Bike Rides Summary Today’s Route

Of the 6 rides so far this year today was the best average speed and shortest distance. My legs felt good getting my overall average speed up to 14.4 mph for several miles as I returned to Kingwood. The light wind helped with that too.

I would say today’s weather was a perfect day for biking. Weather summary: start 78 (73% humidity, 69 dew point), fair, wind calm; finish 83 (48% humidity, 62 dew point), a few clouds, wind N 6 mph.

Parts of Old Atascocita Road need attention. Potholes are getting bigger and more frequent. Biking on the unopened southbound FM 2100 lanes is a stark contrast to Old Atascocita Road in smoothness. FM 2100 construction on the southbound lanes almost reaches the railroad tracks in Huffman with one lane paved and one waiting for concrete. I’m not sure how the railroad crossing will end up. There will be a sidewalk beside the southbound lanes. Sometimes it will border the road and other portions will be on the west side of the drainage ditch.

Six Houston-area cyclists recovering after getting run over by a teen driver in Waller

By Matthew Seedorff | www.fox26houston.com

WALLER, Texas – Six Houston-area cyclists continue to recover after getting run over by a teen driving a pickup truck on September 25 in Waller.

On Tuesday, FOX 26 exclusively spoke with Rachael Maney from Bike Law. Bike Law is now representing the six injured cyclists.

"They suffered broken vertebrae, broken collar bones, hands, [and] wrists, some of which require extensive surgical intervention," said Maney. "Road rash, lacerations, concussions, traumatic brain injuries, all-over …

Special prosecutor assigned to case of 6 cyclists who were allegedly hit by teen driver, lawyers say

Author: Lauren Talarico | www.khou.com

The case garnered national attention after the teen driver was let go without being charged even though witnesses said he’d been "rolling coal" on the cyclists.

WALLER COUNTY, Texas — The attorneys for the cyclists hit by a truck in Waller County said a special prosecutor has been assigned to the case by the Waller County District Attorney.

The case garnered national attention after the teenage driver who allegedly hit the cyclists on Sept. 25, was let go without being charged or ticketed, even though witnesses said the teen had been “rolling coal” on the cyclists before the crash. …

Waller County’s treatment of cyclists enough to ‘raise an eyebrow’

Jay R. Jordan | www.chron.com

As attorneys for six cyclists who were run over by a teenage driver outside Houston investigate the collision, attitudes in Waller County toward cyclists trekking through the community is enough to "raise an eyebrow" about law enforcement’s investigation, an attorney representing the group said during a press conference Wednesday.

Charlie Thomas, a Houston attorney speaking for the half dozen cyclists who were hit Sept. 25, said Waller County has been worse than any other place in and around Houston when it comes to the treatment of cyclists. The long straightaways and open roads are ideal for cyclists training for …

We analysed 100 million bike trips to reveal where in the world cyclists are most likely to brave rain and cold

theconversation.com

Hopping on your bike when it’s raining, or snowing, might seem unappealing. But our research has found inclement weather conditions deter some cyclists more than others.

In the first analysis of its kind, we captured eight years of data from 40 bike-sharing schemes around the world, across a range of climate zones, totalling 100 million trips. We then linked this data to fine-grained historical weather information.

We found weather patterns affect people’s willingness to cycle in different ways. For example, people in Melbourne are more likely to avoid cycling in the rain or …

Austin-to-San Antonio hike-and-bike trail will have a scenic run through Kyle featuring shops, restaurants

Annie Blanks | www.expressnews.com

The City of Kyle in Hays County recently approved a multimillion-dollar trail that will bisect the city and eventually be a part of the 100-mile Great Springs Project trail connecting San Antonio to Austin.

But the trail, which originally was poised to be a natural pathway for cyclists and hikers, has evolved into what city leaders hope will be a hub of industry and development that will jolt Kyle’s population growth — regardless of whether citizens are ready for it.

In late September, the City Council gave its stamp of approval to the project known as The Vybe Kyle. It’s slated snake from the northern end of the city …

Video: Petition begins to bring more safe bike lanes to Corpus Christi

By: Eran Hami | www.kristv.com

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Cyclist groups gather for the main reason of safety. They feel safer riding in larger groups.

Avid Corpus Christi cyclist Shirin Delsooz is looking for a change from the city. She has started an online petition for more safe bike lanes throughout the city.

“When it comes to cycling there is not a single area you can do in this city without fearing for your life,” Delsooz said.

Her biggest gripe is that the city’s lanes don’t line up with recommendations from the Federal Highway Administration. That design features a barrier between …

Stopped To Look At Beautiful Flowers On Valley Ranch Parkway

Headed north on today’s bike ride following my “Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood” route. I changed the route slightly taking FM 1314 east at Porter and Loop 494 to Community Drive increasing the distance to 32.42 miles compared to some previous rides. I didn’t realize how many times I rode this route this year, 15 times. This might be the route I biked the most times this year. I finished at 12:37 PM. Fall weather continues and with the blue sky humidity and dew point remain lower than typical for Houston.

Starting a bike ride this time of day seems to avoid the heavy traffic earlier and later. Some roads have a shoulder like Loop 494 (not wide, about 2 feet). The frontage road northbound does not have a shoulder but does have 3 lanes. The southbound frontage road has a shoulder from the Caney Creek bridge to Valley Ranch Parkway. Valley Ranch Parkway does not have a shoulder but is two lanes in each direction. At Valley Ranch Bend Drive new construction of Valley Ranch Parkway has two southbound lanes that are paved but not open to traffic yet. I ride on the unopened lanes because a curb has been added to the northbound lanes limiting moving to the right for passing traffic.

10-6-2021 YTD Bike Rides Summary Today's Route
10-6-2021 YTD Bike Rides Summary Today’s Route

The wind was light to calm helping me set a strong pace and get my overall average speed up to 14.1 mph. The sun warmed the air but not too hot and with the dew point lower than normal it didn’t feel that hot. Weather summary: start 78 (68% humidity, 67 dew point), fair, wind calm; finish 84 (49% humidity, 62 dew point), a few clouds, wind N 4 mph.

My legs felt good as I spun the pedals. I ordered a new set of ICAN Cycling Alpha 50 carbon wheels for my Lynskey R300. I look forward to comparing the ride on them to the Vision 30 aluminum wheels currently on the bike. I will drop the tire size to 700Cx28mm from 700Cx32mm.
