About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Video: MSU Texas Cycling team reflects on hosting cycling conference championship

by: Markeshia Jackson, Dylan Jimenez | www.texomashomepage.com

WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — The Midwestern State University Cycling team hosted the South Central Collegiate Cycling Conference Championship this weekend and MSU Cycling Director Charlie Zamastil said he feels so much pride about MSU’s 2021 Mountain Bike team and their skills.

“I’m always excited to venture into new territory. We’ve only been really fielding a mountain bike team for the past few years so historically we haven’t had much of a mountain bike presence in the conference and it’s been dominated by Texas A&M, UT, Baylor, UNT, a lot of the bigger schools,” Zamastil said.

Having hosted the SCCCC Championship for the …

Q3 2021: Third Quarterly Report of My Bicycling and Other Habits

A Dude Abikes | adudeabikes.com

Now that we’re 90 days from the end of 2021, it’s time for my third quarterly report. July, August and September are the hottest months in Texas, and that heat and stupidity tend to slow most dudes and dudettes down. (I meant humidity, which with the heat tends to make one stupid.) But, I never claimed to be smart, so I have gone on a bicycle ride every single day of the pandemic (and for a while before that). Regular readers know I’m like only 50% of that Cake lyric: “He’s going for distance, he’s (not) going for speed.” On top of that, I take a walk, do yoga, and got myself into some other daily activities, practices aka habits. Sure, it was stupid hot (though not as bad as last year), and I do not bike fast. However, although I don’t get a cent from it, you could say I’m in the …

Finally, A Rain Free Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 3, 2021 by Rick AnkrumOctober 3, 2021

An afternoon start for today’s bike ride. In days past that meant more exposure to rain but I think the weather is changing. Wheels down at 1:53 PM riding the Canyon Endurace. I wanted to ride far enough to get even with the pace to reach my 625 mile goal for October. I chose the “Forest Cove – Oakhurst – Valley Ranch” route and went 28.61 miles. My October total is up to 62.34 miles. That puts me slightly ahead of the pace I need. I missed biking Friday due to rain. Part of the route was on the San Jacinto Bayou Greenway which is still a work in progress.

The week finished with 158.98 miles. Not bad considering the weather and other issues I had. Nine times biking today’s route in 2021. I don’t show riding it in previous years.

While no fell during the ride the sky did have plenty of clouds. Near the end of the ride I wondered if some rain would catch me but ti didn’t. Weather summary: start 84 (72% humidity, 74 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind var 5 mph; 83 (73% humidity, 73 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind N 7 mph. Fall has been a dent in the high temperature. Next week is forecast to clear with the lows in the upper 60’s and highs in the low 80’s. I’m ready for rain to leave.

Racked up some personal records in Strava.

Bike rider brings joy to Kingwood streets with his trio of canine companions

Treyvon Waddy | www.houstonchronicle.com

Jose ‘Joe’ Ruiz and his three poodles ride along Kingwood Drive, Monday, Sept. 27, 2021, in Kingwood. Last October, the retired railroad worker began riding with his dogs and their custom-made carrier around Kingwood and can be spotted most evenings. ‘Last year with the pandemic and the election there wasn’t a lot of happiness or joy.’ Ruiz said. ‘All I want to do is make people happy – to laugh. If I’ve done that, even if I don’t see their faces as they drive past, I feel like I’ve done my job.’

Before the pandemic, Jose Ruiz walked his dogs every day without fail. As political tensions ensued over time, he wanted to make his local community smile. Ruiz attached to his bike a carrier for his dogs, and began cycling around the neighborhood, greeting everyone he saw.

The 68-year-old, referred to as “Joe” by the community, has since made this his new daily routine, touching the hearts of everyone who sees him. He goes …

Misplaced Rain Optimism, Soaked Again

Texbiker.net Posted on October 2, 2021 by Rick AnkrumOctober 2, 2021

This week’s bike rides ran into a number of problems. From rain to pinch flats and back to rain I fell short of the miles and number of rides I planned. Plans sometimes are made to be broken. Rolling out on today’s bike ride at 8:47 AM I chose my Lynskey R300 bike rather than the Canyon Endurace bike I normally ride on Saturdays. I did my re-ride weather radar check and no rain in the area giving me a feeling that this bike ride would be dry. If only that optimism held true. The route was my usual Saturday one, “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden” with the hope of seeing other cyclists. By the 11:39 AM finish I saw other cyclists, rode in the rain on W. Lake Houston Parkway, stopped to wait for the heavy rain to stop, and ride the last mile on dry streets. No flat tire though.

I rode 33.73 miles pushing the week’s total to 130.38 miles and recording the first miles towards my 625 mile goal for October. With rain canceling yesterday’s ride I am behind the pace to reach that goal. Maybe next week’s weather will be more cooperative.

10-2-2021 YTD Bike Rides Summary Today's Route
10-2-2021 YTD Bike Rides Summary Today’s Route

As the ride progressed the mostly cloudy sky started to turn to overcast but the clouds didn’t seem to hold rain until I began to ride west on FM 1960 where I saw heavier clouds hovering over Kingwood. Maybe if I left out the loop through Walden I might’ve beat the rain but I didn’t want to shorten the ride and lose the miles. I made the right hand turn onto W. Lake Houston Parkway (check the video) and was encouraged that to think the rain would hold off. But as I rode off the bridge into the Kings Harbor area I felt rain drops and by the time I reached a place to get out of the rain it was coming down soaking me. I waited about 15 minutes with the rain strengthening and waning and strengthening before slowing to a point I got back on my Lynskey. I hoped the trees would provide some shelter but the rain soaked them enough to continue the rain. I wondered if the cyclists who passed me at Kings River Drive avoided the rain, I don’t think so.

10-2-2021 Bike Ride in Rain Lynskey R300
10-2-2021 Bike Ride in Rain Lynskey R300

Weather summary: start 72 (99% humidity, 72 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind NE 5 mph; finish 78 (94% humidity, 76 dew point), rain, wind NE 8 mph. A front might pass through early next week ending the rain for a few days.

I changed the GoPro Hero10 Black video resolution and it simplified my workflow for the video. The sound is muffled in a couple of clips. Not sure what is causing that. Maybe the wind setting for the microphone?

The bright side of the ride: Strava says I am the Local Legend on two segments.
