About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

City reaches halfway milestone on bike network buildout

by Jonathan Lee | www.austinmonitor.com

This month marked a big milestone for cycling in Austin: The city’s All Ages and Abilities Bicycle Network reached its halfway completion point, making getting places by bike more comfortable and convenient.

So far, the AAA network includes 215 miles of bike lanes, 100 miles of which have been built since 2018. Though the build-out of the 400-plus-mile network is currently slightly behind schedule due to pandemic delays, the city still expects to finish ahead of schedule by 2025, according to a press release.

Laura Dierenfield with the Austin Transportation Department told the Austin Monitor that the …

A virtual open house for this project will be held on Wednesday, October 6 from 6-7 pm. Join staff from the City of Houston and Harris County to learn more, ask questions and provide feedback. Meeting link: https://bit.ly/3hw2nsW(External link)

The Cavalcade-Homestead Healthy Connection Corridor is a planned project to improve street safety and connect people to work, school, parks, and other destinations in a way that supports a healthy lifestyle. The improvements include wider and more comfortable bike lanes, sidewalks, and bus stops on Cavalcade Street and Homestead Road, two major streets in Kashmere Gardens and Trinity Gardens. When complete, residents will be able to bike safely to the Halls Bayou Greenway trail, along with the expanding network of bikeways throughout Houston.

White Oak Bayou Trail Detour

www.letstalkhouston.org

Project Overview

The White Oak Bayou Greenway Trail is closed between Hollister Street and Cole Creek. The Harris County Flood Control District is widening this section of bayou and updating structures.

This project proposes a safe detour to maintain connectivity and direct walkers and bikers back on to the trail during construction. We are planning for a short-term solution that can lead to a long-term, permanent high-comfort bikeway in the area. Improvements along the detour will address safety concerns for all modes, including crosswalk and intersection improvements for the corridor.

We are seeking feedback for our proposed detour options. View our ideas in the presentation in the documents section.

For more insight into the project, view the Bayou Greenways Map(External link) and the HCFCD Project Webpage(External link) in the important links section.

Grisly Texas Crash Raises Old Questions About Teen Drivers

By Kea Wilson | usa.streetsblog.org

Safe streets advocates in Texas are questioning the state driving age after an aggressive teenage motorist mowed down six cyclists this weekend — and some are wondering whether children really belong behind the wheel anywhere in America.

On Saturday, a group of triathletes was out on a training ride in rural Waller County outside Houston when an unidentified motorist in a black Ford pick-up approached part of the peloton and began blowing an excessive amount of diesel exhaust into their path — a maneuver known as “rolling coal” which …

"The Waller Police Department is conducting the investigation due to the incident occurring in the city limits," said Waller County Sheriff Troy Guidry. "It is in the best interest for all parties involved that law enforcement conducts a thorough investigation." …

Ah, Rain, Its Necessary for Many Things But Not Bike Rides

Texbiker.net Posted on September 28, 2021 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 28, 2021

Ah, rain, its necessary for many things but not bike rides. I delayed the start of the bike ride until 11:03 AM by watching two road races. I kept an eye on the weather radar because rain was in the area too. It looked okay when I rode my Canyon Endurace to begin but I figured I might run into rain. My planned route was “Atascocita – Walden – FM 2100” but the dark clouds hovering over FM 1960 east of Lake Houston inspired me to change to the “Atascocita – Walden – E. Lake Houston Parkway” route. Maybe I was too hasty changing the route. As I rode west back over Lake Houston about half way to the west shore it started raining (the video covers this). Possibly if I stayed on my original route the rain would’ve had time to move away by the time I got back to FM 1960 to ride west. Or it could’ve caught me on Old Atascocita Road and I had even longer to ride in the rain. I’ll never know. what I do know, when the rain started I rode in it all the way back into Kingwood. I stopped for about 15 minutes at the Kings River Pool when the thunder became more frequent. It was still raining when I left but the thunder lessened. Stopping might’ve been a bad choice because I cooled down and when I began riding it felt very chilly. I didn’t realize that the temperature dropped about 10 degrees from the start. I rode on the greenbelt trail hoping the overhanging tee limbs would shelter me from the rain but it rained enough to soak them and let it fall to the ground. That might’ve been a good idea earlier but not when I was biking.

Once I was back in Kingwood the rain stopped but I was soaked so it didn’t really help. The rain was still around just not where I was. After I finished the ride at 1:35 PM I looked at the Canyon Endurace. It was dirty as was I. I got soap and a brush to wash the Canyon and it looked much better after I finished.

This was not a fast ride but once the rain started in the middle of the lake I sped up which I think increased the rain hitting me. Weather summary: start 82 (84% humidity, 77 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SW 6 mph; finish 73 (98% humidity, 73 dew point), rain, wind S 4 mph. The probability of rain increases Wednesday and Thursday. Hopefully I can bike and not get rained on again.

This was the 6th time biking this route in 2021. I don’t think any of the other times was in the rain. I rode 28.5 miles which puts September 2021 ahead of September 2020 by 8 miles at 810.1 miles this year.

Furious cyclists call for arrest, alleging teen driver menaced them before crash that injured 6

Dug Begley | www.houstonchronicle.com

Suspicion that a Waller County teen who plowed into six cyclists on a weekend training ride was menacing them has area bike riders furious, arguing that the consequence-free way to kill someone in Texas is to do it with a car.

“It is clear that the cycling community is feeling threatened and that there is nobody looking out for them in Waller County,” said Joe Cutrufo, executive director of the advocacy group BikeHouston.

Dozens of people were on a training ride Saturday along U.S. 290 Business about two miles west of downtown Waller, but within city limits, when a …

Atomic TT Series Sat 25th September

Several riders were able to improve on current fastest times or score a podium most notably Chris Gibbons who finished 3rd of the Cat 3 Men, Ty Annoura who ended up 2nd in the Junior Boys event and Tracy Jones-Martin who’s 500m time moved her into 2nd in the women’s elite and 40+ events.

I would like to extend a big thankyou to Andy Weather of Atomic for his sponsorship, Cyndi, Mike & Jim for officiating and all the volunteers who helped make this series a great success!

Track Records Several track records were broken on the final day of the Atomic TT’s. Firstly Koh Annoura broke the M55+ F200 (11.49 – Using his massive Sprint King Chainring!) and the M55+ 500m TT (35.35) before Andy Weathers bettered his own Men’s Elite 500m TT record (34.65).

Both the 2 person team sprint records then fell, first Koh & Ty Annoura then teamed up to clock 50.38 before Jen Wagner and Tracy Jones-Martin recorded 49.58.

Rider of the Year Competition Gabi St Clair (Jr Girls) and Darby Deming (M3) secured RoY victories this weekend! Our other confirmed RoY winners are: Elite Women – Paige Zizka W40+ – Tracy Jones-Martin Jr. Boys – Elijah Allison W3 – Clare Gardner

Women Cat 4 Zaira Estrada goes to the final FNR needing 3rd place or better to win RoY. If she finishes outside the top 3 it opens the door for either Gabi St. Clair or Marissa Marsh to overtake her.

Men Cat 4 Sebastian Bech is leading Robin Carrera by 5 points, both are tied in FNR rankings so it will come down to who does best in the final race unless they both finish outside the top 5 in which case a win from Marcos Reyes would give him the RoY.

Men 40+ Due to closest rival Veon McReynolds being away Robert Bodamer has all but secured this. Daan Kegel can mathematically win with help from David Roberts if Bodamer finished outside the top 4 M40 racers.

Elite Men Cason Hewgley just needs a podium finish to take the title, if he doesn’t Said Assali can overhaul him with either a win or if Cason fails to be in the top 6 2nd place will be enough. John Martin has a long shot of winning but requires Cason to finish outside the top 6 and Said to finish 3rd or worse.

Badly Discolored Helmet, Welcome Back Humidity

Texbiker.net Posted on September 27, 2021 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 27, 2021

The low humidity and dew point weather moved out leaving a muggy biking condition. My Lynskey R300 and I rolled away at 10:30 AM to follow the “New Caney – Roman Forest – Valley Ranch” route. In the video I guess the ride will be 39 or 40 miles long but it turned out to be 42.43 miles. Nice ride to start the week and boost September to 781.59 miles, further exceeding my 700 mile goal and getting close to the 802 miles I biked in September 2020. 6 times I biked this route in 2021. This time was a little more distance than the other 5 times. YTD 2021 still leads YTD 2020 with the gap at 298 miles (2021 totals 7,555 miles).

Weather: start 77 (81% humidity, 71 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind E 9 mph; finish 86 (63% humidity, 72 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind E 4 mph.

After the ride I rinsed the helmet straps on my Lazer Sphere MIPS and was surprised to see the red color was gone on the top of the helmet. Normally I don’t look at the top because I put the helmet upside down on the table I store it on. So I have no idea when this happened. I contacted CompetitiveCyclist.com where I bought it and am waiting to hear from the warranty department. I received the helmet March 2021.
