About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Hitting the road on a ride for a cure

Author: Barry Davis | www.kens5.com

SAN ANTONIO — It really is true — once you learn how to ride a bike, you never forget.

I just don’t seem to do it with as much vigor as that little 5-year-old boy who learned almost six decades ago.

I rode for fun.

More recently, I rode for exercise. And now, I have found another reason — Multiple Sclerosis!

The Bike MS: Valero Ride to the River, is a yearly event, raising money to fight the disease.

"Team Wingman is a friends and family thing that’s got no corporate sponsors, and we’ve raised a little over a million dollars, just for the MS ride," says Rudy Mendez. He formed …

Why There’s A Ski Lift In Central Texas

By Matt Lorelli | unofficialnetworks.com

Spider Mountain, located just 60 miles from Austin, TX is the only year-round lift-serviced bike park in the US.

Spider Mountain uses a Green, Blue, Black trail rating system like ski areas, and used one chairlift to ferry riders to the top.

Vertical: 350′

Number of Trails: 9

Adult Lift Ticket Price: $59

It’s really exciting to see the sport of downhill mountain biking explode. I feel like I’m reading about more places to hit the dirt every week.

Unfortunately, I’ve never …

Suspect accused of assaulting acquaintance, stealing his bicycle on East Side, police say

SAPD: The suspect pushed the man off his bike before punching and kicking him

SAN ANTONIO – A 27-year-old man was arrested after San Antonio police say he beat up an acquaintance and stole his bicycle.

Joshua Munoz has been charged with robbery following the incident that took place Monday at the intersection of Dawson and North Cherry streets, according to records with the Bexar County Jail.

A 60-year-old man was riding his bicycle on Dawson Street, and as he approached the intersection, Munoz stepped out into the street and pushed him, an arrest warrant affidavit states.

The man fell to the ground and Munoz punched and kicked him in his face, head and the rest of his body, police said. …

Closing In On 200 Mile Week and September Goal

Texbiker.net Posted on September 24, 2021 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 24, 2021

Another fall like day awaited as I rolled out on today’s bike ride at 10:20 AM. I rode my Lynskey R300 bike on the “Community Drive – Valley Ranch – Gene Campbell Blvd” route. After biking 36.43 miles I finished at 1:20 PM. Those miles set me up for a 200 mile week and tomorrow’s ride should do it. I only need 15 miles to reach my 700 mile goal for September too. This route is new to my portfolio with this being the 3rd ride this year.

It didn’t get quite as cool overnight as yesterday but it was still in the 50’s when I got up. BY the start time it was in the mid 70’s with a light 5 mph wind. That wind seemed stronger at times especially riding NW on FM 1314 to Gene Campbell Blvd. It did move around giving me a headwind and a tailwind on the same road. My new Polar water bottle keeps the water chilled for the whole ride but it hasn’t been tested when its 90+. Weather summary: start 77 (62% humidity, 63 dew point), fair, wind var 5 mph; finish 82 (42% humidity, 56 dew point), a few clouds, wind E 9 mph. The low humidity and dew point are making it feel cooler.

I stopped at the Woodridge Forest Community Center and Pool for these photos.

Thanks for your interest in The Orbit, @theSurlyBiker. The ride was a first try at a new idea that didn’t quite do what we want it to do (and we made a couple of wrong turns). So the route isn’t quite ready to share, as it remains a work in progress.

54 Degrees At Sunrise, Warmed Up, Strong Winds Gone, Blue Sky Stayed

Texbiker.net Posted on September 23, 2021 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 23, 2021

The front that arrived yesterday packed some cold temperatures. When I got up this morning my home weather station reported 53.7 degrees. I wondered how long it would take to get above my 60 degree “okay to bike” threshold. It didn’t take too long once the sun got above the trees. After a run to the grocery store I got dressed and started the bike ride at 10:24 AM. A beautiful blue sky and light wind greeted me as I followed my “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route for 34.16 miles. I modified the route slightly on the return through Kings River by riding on Water Point Drive. I had not rode the portion from Kings River Drive to Kings Park Way. I’m now in a good position for a 200 mile week with 152.31 miles so far. This was the 12th time riding this route. I need just a little over 50 miles to reach my 700 mile goal for September.

The video shows the bright blue sky. The arm sleeves provided some warmth early in the ride and sun protection later. No strong headwind or tailwind today. My legs were glad. Weather: start 76 (49% humidity, 56 dew point), fair, wind SE 4 mph; finish 80 (39% humidity, 52 dew point), fair, wind E 7 mph. Unusual humidity and dew point for Houston. They took the muggy feeling out of the ride. I do like the low humidity but I prefer the temperature to be in the 80’s or above.

I saw two other cyclists: one in Bear Branch Village of Kingwood but not in the video, one on Fairlake Lane in the video.
