About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Bike Ride Benefits Nonprofit Helping Cancer Patients

By Deborah Ferguson | www.nbcdfw.com

A son inspired by his mother’s fight against cancer continues to do something good to help other patients. And once again, he’s getting a lift from the cycling community.

A couple of hundred cyclists rolled into Decatur early Saturday morning for a charity bicycle ride.

They took off from the courthouse square for rides of eight, 25, 50 or 100 miles through the country roads of Wise County.

All of it to benefit Raquel’s Wings for Life, a nonprofit organization that transports cancer patients free of cost to the medical facility of their choice. …

Stuart Gardner | www.alkekvelodrome.com

Upcoming Events

The final race in our 2021 TT Series – You can see how you are doing so far and what you need to do here.

Learn to ride the track! This will give you the accreditation to train and race at Alkek Velodrome!

Friday Night Racing – Friday 1st Oct at 6:30pm

Races will be Scratch, Elimination & Points Races.

This is the last race of the year to count towards our Rider of the Year awards. It’s complicated but I have summarized below how things stand. For full rankings see our FNR Rankings and Rider of the Year Rankings.

Shred de Roots MTB Race @ Huntsville SP 1st-3rd Oct

An awesome event that forms part of the TMBRA Fall Series. Please support this event by racing, volunteering, or both as they support our programs!

Madison Super Sling Clinics – Wed 29th Sept & Wed 13th Oct

We will have our Madison Championship at the end of our Seasons Finale night on Friday October 15th. This is one final chance to win one of our Championship Jerseys!

Nationals Update

Collegiate Nationals

Newly crowned Alkek Elite Women’s Rider of the Year Paige Zizka represented Texas A&M at MJV, IN where she had the pleasure of racing in a fast field including an Olympic medalist in Megan Jabstrab! Paige was able to secure 3rd place in the club competition for A&M!

Masters Nationals

7x🥇🇺🇸, 3x🥈, 0x🥉

Several of our masters have been in T-Town, PA this week chasing stars, stripes and gold. Koh Annoura was the first Alkek rider to take a win in the 55-59 Sprint event which he followed with a Silver in the 500m TT. Jennifer Wagner won gold in the 500m TT, Scratch & Match Sprint to add to her stellar collection! Tracy Jones-Martin won the Scratch race, took silver in the 500m TT and Match Sprint. Jen & Tracy then teamed up to win the Team Sprint Gold! The story of the week though was Veon McReynolds winning the M70-74 scratch race in style after an epic solo move!

Well done to all our riders that raced, Eldon Criswell, Dean Hariguchi, John Martin and Said Assali all put in strong performances and were unlucky not to medal.

I hope to have a bit of a homecoming celebration at the Atomic TT finals for those who can attend so bring your jersey’s and medals if you can make it!

Alkek Racing

FNR this week was a fun one with plenty of new and returning faces out! In the Women and Junior races Pamela Ferguson came out as the top women on her return while Owen Blumenthal won his first FNR Omnium in some style too! Elijah Allison was the 3rd jr. which was enough to secure the Junior RoY for 2021. Sebastian Bech won the Cat 4 Omnium after a daring move in the final race and Alex Wieseler took the M123 Omnium on his first night racing at Alkek.

FNR #8 Results

Rider of the Year Standings…

This year has been an interesting one to say the least but we are approaching the sharp end and soon it will be time to crown our 2021 Riders of the Year. Each winner of Adult categories will receive an awesome belt buckle while our junior champions will win some really nice kit donated by Lawson Craddock that should see them able to ride through the winter and come back even better next year!

The format this year was a bit experimental and I will simplify it for 2022 but with 2 races to go here is how things stand…

Cat 4 Women

Assuming no big changes at the TT Zaira Estrada will go to the final FNR with a solid lead however if she slips up either Gabi St. Clair or Marissa Marsh could overtake her. While Tegan Morgan is in 2nd she can’t improve on her FNR ranking so can’t overtake Zaira.

Cat 4 Men

Sebastian Bech is leading Robin Carrera by 1 point, both are tied in FNR rankings so it will come down to who does best in the final race unless they both finish outside the top 5 in which case a win from Paul von Burg or Marcos Reyes would give them the RoY. TT performances could change this a little.

Cat 3 Women

Clare Gardner has this one locked up!

Cat 3 Men

Cason Hewgley can equal Darby Deming if he retains his top Kilo and IP and records the fastest F200 (Currently 12.17s) and Darby doesn’t improve on his TT rankings. If Darby drops down the TT rankings Cason can overtake him. In the event of points being equal it will come down to the Final FNR to decide the winner. If Darby can improve by just 1 TT point he secures the win.

Junior Girls

Tegan Morgan leads but Gabi St. Clair can overtake her with a strong TT performance. She will need to beat Tegan’s times in at least one, possibly both events. If both end up tied after the TT it will come down to a head to head at the final FNR.

Junior Boys

Elijah Allison has this in the bag!

Women’s 40+

2019’s elite women’s RoY Tracy Jones-Martin has this tied up!

Men’s 40+

Unless Robert Bodamer can secure the title by getting >6 more points than Veon in the TT series final on Saturday otherwise it’s going to be a straight shootout between him and Veon McReyolds at the final FNR. Winner on the night wins the RoY!

Elite Women – #101 for 2022

Paige Zizka has won this award! Congratulations Paige who will be wearing #101 in 2022!

Elite Men – #1 for 2022

Cason Hewgley just needs a podium finish to take the title, if he doesn’t Said Assali can overhaul him with either a win or if Cason fails to be in the top 6 2nd place will be enough. John Martin has a long shot of winning but requires Cason to finish outside the top 6 and Said to finish 3rd or worse. While Darby Deming sits in 3rd even a win will not be enough to put him on top due to his points distribution. While unlikely TT points could change it a bit.

Tuesday 5:30-8pm – Open Training Wednesday 5:30-8pm – Open Training Thursday 5:30-8pm – Open Training Saturday 8:30am – Atomic TT’s Sunday 8-11am – Open Training Sunday 11am – Track Intro Class

Some Grass Farms, Some Unopened Lanes, More Miles Than Expected

Texbiker.net Posted on September 20, 2021 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 20, 2021

Good start for the week of biking. I left home at 9:41 AM riding my Canyon Endurace bike and finished at 1:09 PM after riding 43.12 miles. I rode my ” Stroker Road – Huffman” route. This was the first time in 2021 on this route though I rode the similar “Kingwood – Stroker Road – Kingwood” route twice. That route does not go through Huffman which I did today. I utilized the unopened sections of FM 2100 to ride north from Stroker Road to just south of the railroad tracks in Huffman. With these miles I am getting closer to my 700 mile goal for September. I only need 159.7 more miles.

The video includes several clips showing the status of the FM 2100 unopened lanes.

Today and tomorrow will be hot days before a front arrives late Tuesday or early Wednesday lowering the overnight lows into the 60’s or 50’s. Break out the winter biking gear. Weather summary for the ride: start 84 (81% humidity, 77 dew point), a few clouds, wind SW 6 mph; finish 90 (65% humidity, 76 dew point), partly cloudy, wind SE 10 mph. The wind felt stronger when it was a headwind and weaker when a tailwind.

I claimed the Local Legend on 2100 N bound segment according to Strava with 2 rides.

Riding Opposite Direction Moves The Bumps

Texbiker.net Posted on September 19, 2021 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 19, 2021

I mixed up some streets riding in the opposite direction to add variety to the bike ride. I didn’t start the ride until 1:24 PM after getting home from church. My Lynskey R300 bike carried me the opposite direction on my “Forest Cove – Oakhurst – Valley Ranch” route. Interesting how I know where the cracks and bumps are going direction but not the other. No chance to get 200 miles for the week but today’s 28.41 miles closed the gap. While I rode some streets and the greenway in the opposite direction I still count this as ride # 8 for the year on this route. It’s a good thing this month’s goal is less than August’s with all of the missed biking days so far.

Fall arrives on Wednesday the 22nd and the temperature today during the bike ride was in the 80’s. Some forecasts show a cool front arriving Wednesday so I may wish for this weather then. I used my CamelBak on the ride with the heat and the cold water tasted good. Weather summary for the bike ride: start 86 (62% humidity, 72 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind NW 5 mph; finish 88 (58% humidity, 71 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 4 mph.

Strava showed 4 best results for my effort.
