About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

First Day Of Fall Chilly Bike Ride To Mount Wichita

Durango Texas | durangotexas.blogspot.com

This is being the strangest start of a new season I can remember. A couple days ago we hit 103 degrees for one of the few times the temperature went over 100 this summer. I think my old Washington home zone had more days over 100.

And now, today, on the first day of Fall, the temperature was in the low 50s when the sun arrived this morning. My interior space is currently 76 degrees, naturally air-conditioned. The un-natural air-conditioner has not run since yesterday.

I took off about an hour before noon, with the temperature 70, and let my bike roll …

Part of what makes the “All Abilities Park” in Round Rock great is that they provide water next to the sand pit for making sloppy sand-mud. And nice bike riding along the Brushy Creek Trail. #bikes #GrammyAndPopPreschool pic.twitter.com/VfTNorFoJh

Fall Blows In With 27 mph Gusts, Headwind Battle to Tavola

Texbiker.net Posted on September 22, 2021 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 22, 2021

The big news for today’s bike ride: fall weather arrived with a strong north wind. It just so happened that the bike ride went north on my “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route. I planned this a couple of days ago not thinking a strong wind would be coming at me on the way to Tavola. I delayed the start until 10:53 AM after going to Humble to check on something at church. This also gave some time for the temperature to go up a few degrees. Riding my Lynskey R300 I went 35.14 miles boosting the week to 118.15 miles and the month to 615.35 miles, only 85 miles away from my goal. 13 times I rode today’s route in 2021. The last time was September 8th which surprises me that it was that long ago. A 200 mile week looks possible.

The first day of fall arrived with a front last night. The temperature dropped from yesterday’s bike ride. It was pleasant biking but I’m glad I wore my arm sleeves. Once I warmed up and the shade lessened it felt good. Unbelievable low humidity and dew points for here.

Getting to Tavola took lots of hard pedaling as the headwind buffeted me. I got a little relief when the trees or building on my right blocked some of the wind. I used a lower gear than normal until I got into Tavola. The ride back to Kingwood felt good with the tailwind providing an assist. I upped my speed riding south improving my overall average speed to 13.7 mph after struggling earlier.

Before leaving after taking the Lynskey to the back gate I noticed the left seat pad on the BiSaddle was out of position. The last ride on the bike was uncomfortable for my left sitting area. I moved the seat pad in some and this ride was much better.

Cyclists to converge on Palestine

BY PENNYLYNN WEBB | www.palestineherald.com

Cyclists from around the United States will arrive in Palestine this week for the Camino 205: The Texas Gravel Adventure.

Over 200 bike enthusiasts are expected to converge on Old Town Palestine Friday, Sept. 24 through Sunday, Sept. 26, to compete in one of three levels of competition.

This race was established in 2014 as a one-day event and has been taken over this year by Alex Montoya with Topview Sports. It has been extended to a weekend event, allowing participants time to explore the Palestine community.

Lots of bikes getting stolen lately. To reduce your risk, ALWAYS lock it (even on 2nd and 3rd floor balconies!), use a u-lock (not a cable lock), and lock your FRAME (not your wheel) to the bike rack.

UNT students can get a free u-lock by contacting Officer Causey with UNT PD. https://t.co/klOHxRmHad

Last Summer Bike Ride on Spring Creek Greenway

Texbiker.net Posted on September 21, 2021 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 21, 2021

Continuing to mix up my routes I chose the Spring Creek Greenway for today’s bike ride. I didn’t ride the full length just to John Pundt Park for a total of 39.89 miles. I rode my Canyon Endurace bike after riding my Lynskey R300 bike the previous 4 times on the Greenway. I wanted to start earlier than I did leaving at 10:12 AM and finishing at 1:39 PM. The week now totals 83 miles and September 580.21 miles, 120 miles away from my goal for the month. YTD 2021 stands at 7,354 miles, 220 miles ahead of YTD 2020. I thought 2020 would close the gap some.

9-21-2021 YTD Bike Rides Summary Spring Creek Greenway
9-21-2021 YTD Bike Rides Summary Spring Creek Greenway

Fall arrives tomorrow but today was plenty warm before a front arrives late today. One reason I rode the greenway was the shade but all of the trees also block the wind at times. Riding to John Pundt Park generally was into a headwind and the return to the US59/I-69 trailhead had a tailwind some of the time. If I started earlier the temperature would’ve been a few degrees lower for few miles. Weather summary: start 86 (81% humidity, 80 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind W 6 mph; finish 91 (58% humidity, 74 dew point), partly cloudy, wind SW 6 mph.

The greenway was not very busy with a few cyclists. I saw most of them twice which made it seem busier. At John Pundt Park the number of cars in the parking lot was less than my last ride. I stopped there for about 15 minutes to rest, enjoy the shade and the little breeze, eat a snack before starting back to US59/I-69. I saw even fewer cyclists then.

On the way back I saw construction workers along Forest Cove Drive preparing to install a bridge for the San Jacinto Bayou Greenway and pour concrete for the greenway on both sides of the bridge.

2 top results from Strava: PR on Get to the Choppa! (49s), 2nd fastest time on Greenway Appendix (56s).
