About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Today’s Bike Ride and August Biking Wrap Up

Texbiker.net Posted on August 31, 2021 by Rick AnkrumAugust 31, 2021

I wrapped up my August bike rides on my Canyon Endurace bike following what I call the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route. The 9:12 AM start time was earlier than yesterday’s bike ride as was the 11:55 AM finish time. During that time I biked 34.56 miles. So far in 2021 I rode today’s route 11 times. Another cyclist passed by in Sherwood Trails Village in Kingwood early in the ride. You can see him in the video.

Another hot day according to the forecast but I avoided the hottest part of the day. Lots of blue sky. The wind stayed in the single digits and the headwind wasn’t too hard. Weather summary: start 84 (79% humidity, 77 dew point), a few clouds, wind W 7 mph; finish 90 (58% humidity, 73 dew point), a few clouds, wind SW 8 mph. It was hot enough to cause salt stains on my shorts and arm sleeves.

Construction at Atascocita Shores Drive and FM 1960 backed up traffic with crews working on the traffic lights. I waited to turn right onto FM 1960 as 4 policemen directed traffic. On the return part of the ride the traffic thinned out and getting onto Atascocita Shores Drive to the north was easier. Riding north on the sidewalk to the right of FM 2100 the weeds still hang over in places but the water left and the mud dried up.

Some Headwind, Some Tailwind Out/Back To SH 242

Texbiker.net Posted on August 30, 2021 by Rick AnkrumAugust 30, 2021

Not riding yesterday allowed my legs to recover from Saturday’s HH100 ride. I needed that for today’s bike ride to the north into a headwind that started at 9:17 AM and finished at 12:15 PM. The 7 mph headwind graduated to to 13 mph during my ride. Fortunately the route made a u-turn at SH 242 and went south changing the headwind to a modest tailwind. I rode my Lynskey R300 bike on what I call my “Kingwood – SH 242 – Kingwood” route for 36.37 miles. This brought my August total to 950.8 miles, well over my 800 mile goal. During 2021 I biked this route 7 times. The image below compares the 7 rides.

8-30-2021 YTD Bike Rides Kingwood – SH242 – Kingwood

Today the Vuelta a Espana took a rest day. Maybe this was a recovery day for me too. I did watch 2 races on GCN+ after the ride.

Overall the weather was typical August. Weather conditions: start 82 (75% humidity, 74 dew point), a few clouds, wind N 7 mph; finish 90 (56% humidity, 72 dew point), partly cloudy, wind NW 13 mph. Later after I finished the bike ride the high could hit the upper 90’s. The bright blue sky was nice.

Day After Wichita Falls Hotter ‘N Hell 100

Durango Texas | durangotexas.blogspot.com

What you are seeing above is a screen cap from Sunday morning’s Wichita Falls Times New Record showing the start of yesterday’s Hotter ‘N Hell 100 bike race event.

Can you see me? Probably not.

A few weeks ago a town in South Dakota had its annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. There was some concern prior to the rally that it would be a COVID super spreader event. I have seen a news report, or two, that that indeed has happened, with a COVID spike hitting those attending the Sturgis Rally.

I know many precautions were taken for yesterday’s Wichita Falls bike rally. I drove by the …

39th Annual Moonlight Cruise Sat night/Sun morn, 2021-09-19 1:30 AM

bicycleaustin.info

So … the moon still waits for no one and no virus, so … annual Full Moon Cruze is always a go come September, and this will be the 39th annual ride!

This year, the ride falls on the Saturday night/Sunday morning of September 18th/19th, 2021.

We will assemble at about 1:30 am at the James D. Pfluger Bicycle and Pedestrian Bridge and we’ll ride out at about 2:15 am to 2:30 am.

And don’t be confused by the date — this ride happens on Saturday night/Sunday morning, the night of the 18th and/or the morning of the 19th! Set an alarm so you don’t forget!

This ride has no leaders and follows a set route, so it happens every year, virus or not. That said, this is definitely the ride to make it to!

The usual route is: https://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/50119986

As always, the schedule for Austin’s full moon rides can be found at http://cycling.frenzied.us/full-moon-rides

A Dude Abikes | adudeabikes.com

Flavor Flav was and is the hype man for seminal rap group Public Enemy. Even if you don’t know their music or who Flav is, if you paid attention during the 80’s and 90’s or saw Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing with their hit, “Fight the Power,” there’s a good chance you heard of the guy wearing a big clock around his neck saying, “Yeah, boyeeeee!” Chuck D was and still is the main voice of serious political rap, but FF keeps it fun. Professional athletes, celebrities, and politicians also have paid hype people — publicists to trumpet their successes and explain away their losses or mistakes. This dude just has this little blog, and Strava the fitness app, through which to toot my own horn. So, it’s tootin’ time. And yeah, I just reached 30,000 miles of bicycling in …
