Where Is The Swamp Cooler Effect? 93 Start, 95 Finish Biking to Roman Forest

At the 9:57 AM start of the bike ride the temperature was already up to 93 degrees. It was going to be hot bike ride on the “New Caney – Roman Forest – Valley Ranch” route today. I added a few side streets and excursions to the route and ended up biking 42.36 miles. So far in 2020 I biked this route 7 times and I was surprised that the last time I rode it was July 23rd. The average length of the 7 rides: 41.64 miles. Today I rode my Lynskey R300 bike for the 3rd time on this route; my Canyon Endurace has traveled the route 4 times this year. Yesterday was a rest day.

With the temperature at 93 when I started I thought it might reach the upper 90’s by the time I finished at 1:18 PM. But it showed 95 on my home weather station when I checked at the end of the ride. During the ride I lost 5.5 pounds even though I drank 2 quarts of water (4 pounds). No wonder my bike shorts were soaked and showing salt stains. Weather at the start and finish: start 93 (72% humidity, 82.4 dew point), a few clouds, wind S 10 mph. Finish 95 (56% humidity, 77.2 dew point), partly cloudy, wind SW 9 mph. The headwind was just strong enough on the return to Kingwood to overpower my legs as I got closer slowing my speed to less than 15 mph.

My 800 goal for the month gets a little closer with today’s bike ride moving up to 293.81 miles. My daily average is 29.38 miles versus the 25.8 miles needed to reach that goal. My daily average fell back after taking yesterday off. I am 35 miles ahead of where I needed to be. I plan another 40+ mile ride tomorrow to regain some of what I lost.

My GoPro Hero 7 Black froze again during the ride when I want to take video at the Brooklyn Trail new development. Pulling the battery didn’t seem to fix it but when I got home I saw slow motion images from when I thought it was froze. Not sure how that happened. I did not think to pull the battery out before the ride to see if that helped. Hopefully I remember to do that tomorrow.

2020 Ride of Silence Update

Hello fellow cyclists, I am tracking 2020 Ride of Silence locations for the RofS Board of Directors. I’m a former V. P., Sr. Outreach Director and Mentor of the organization. I’m currently an Advisor to the Board, our Historian/Statistician, MI Coordinator and a local Organizer. (involved since 2005)

Due to the uniqueness of this year’s Ride because of COVID-19, it allows me to note multiple Ride locations within a city; small group rides, solo rides and virtual rides, vs. typically a single large gathering.

Yes this includes all virtual rides, a Spin for Silence. I had a reply from a spinner on Instagram; [yes I rode on the 20th (May), but it was only on my trainer] As RofS Founder Chris Phelan has always stated; “A single cyclist riding in silence is a RofS”. If you spun that evening on a trainer for the RofS, you joined folks in Antarctica who held their unique Spin for Silence for the 14th year. They count and so do you.

Encounters of The Cyclist Kind

Starting early at 8:10 AM the temperature was 78 degrees but the humidity of 99% meant a sweaty bike ride. I chose the “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden” route to cross paths with other cyclists though the number today fell below most Saturdays. At the beginning of the ride I needed 12 miles to make this a 200+ mile week and ended up biking 32.03 miles making the week total 220.8 miles. My two previous weeks didn’t reach 200 miles so it is nice to be back there. Dry weather helped.

I altered the route slightly from my previous rides because of the road construction on FM 2100 between Old Atascocita road and FM 1960. Rather than ride north on FM 2100 I retraced the route on Old Atascocita Road and Fairlake Lane to FM 1960. I think that section of the roads is rougher than the opposite direction. I thought this might shorten the route a little but was about the average distance from the other 12 times I rode the route this year. Of the 13 times biking the route 12 of them was aboard my Canyon Endurace bike (today) and 1 time on my Lynskey R300 bike. Looks like I need to ride the Lynskey R300 more on this route.

When I finished the ride at 10:33 AM my shorts, jersey, arm sleeves, and gloves were soaked from perspiration. After getting off the bike I felt sweat running down my legs so I got my sweat “rag” out of the garage and wiped down before going in the house. Looking back on the weather conditions I see why; start 78 (99% humidity, 77.4 dew point), a few clouds, wind calm. Finish 93 (68% humidity, 80.6 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 4 mph. I had to laugh when one of the commentators of the Milan-SanRemo race said the humidity was exceptionally high at 53%. I finished my ride in time to watch the last 30 Km of that race in Italy on Flobikes.com. That is a “dry” day around Houston this time of the year.
