About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Roads and Scenery Look Different In Reverse Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 7, 2020 by Rick AnkrumAugust 7, 2020

Due to a time constraint I started today’s bike ride at 9:00 AM, unheard of for a weekday bike ride. I am on a kick of finding route variety and today I rode the “Oakhurst – Valley Ranch” one for the 3rd time in 2020. The last time I did it was March 29th. To get a few extra miles I added some streets to the early portion and around the 24 mile point. While the roads and streets for part of the route are no strangers riding them in reverse gives another view and awareness of the road surface differences lanes can have. One side can be smooth and the other bumpy. Those extra streets resulted in 30.12 miles today, about 3 miles more than the other two rides.

My status on reaching the 800 mile goal for August is improving with a total of 219.42 miles. The week total stands at 188.77 miles making a 200+ mile week possible with 2 biking days left. I am averaging 31.35 miles per day versus the 25.8 miles per day to reach my 800 mile goal. That’s 5.55 miles above, pointing to potentially exceeding my goal if the current pace can be rode to the end of the month. Weather may throw a wrench in it or help. So far the weather has been on my side.

With the hour early start the temperature was approaching 90 degrees but the wind was light. I filled the CamelBak with ice and water and at the 11:12 AM finish there was still ice left unlike rides the last few days. Weather conditions: start 88 (78% humidity, 80.5 dew point), a few clouds, wind N 4. Finish 94 (67% humidity, 81 dew point), a few clouds, wind S 8 mph.

For the last few months when I ride the Canyon Endurace bike at random times during the ride the Wahoo cadence sensor and Favero Assioma power meter would lose connection with my Wahoo Bolt computer when the Bolt would pop up a message that it was pairing with my phone after I had paired them before starting the ride. The sensors would take about a minute to start sending or the Bolt get information. I wrote an email to Wahoo support and they gave me 3 things to try. I tried them before today’s bike ride and the problem didn’t happen.

Another problem has the GoPro Hero 7 Black camera freezing at random times during a bike ride. I put a different microSD card in it and today it didn’t freeze. Hopefully this fixes it.

Herman: Mellow Johnny’s to cops: No bikes for you

By Ken Herman | www.statesman.com

Discrimination, often a good thing, often gets a bad name. Fair-minded though you are, you support laws that discriminate.

You discriminate against 10-year-olds in your support of laws that say they can’t vote or consume alcoholic beverages or drive cars or get married. Makes sense.

Our gun laws discriminate about who can own guns. You think that’s a good idea. Me, too.

Discrimination can be good. Discrimination can be bad. Discrimination can be legal. Discrimination can be illegal. Our laws ban discrimination in commerce based on characteristics such as age, gender, sexual orientation and race.

I don’t think our laws ban discrimination based on occupation. So, what are we to make of local bicycle shop …

***Stolen YETI SB5+ ********

By Shanerpvt | austinmountainbiking.com

I had my YETI SB5+ stolen off my rack in South Austin. The thieves cut the cable locking in clean, leaving behind a oily residue.

Please be on the lookout for it. Sea Foam silicon grips, a King cage under the down tube, large, light colored scuff on right side of top tube.

There are a good amount of Yeti’s on the trails, but I haven’t seen many SB5+ (27.5”, 2.8” nobby nic).

If you run across a bike fitting this distribution, please contact the Austin Police Dept: Tracking # T20004203 or PM me directly.

It seems to me they are the specific tools need to cut the lock quickly, which make me think these are experiences thieves, please help me catch them if you see anything. It could happen to anyone. …

New Asphalt, No Detour on Spring Creek Greenway

Texbiker.net Posted on August 6, 2020 by Rick AnkrumAugust 6, 2020

After writing about route variety yesterday today I rode the Spring Creek Greenway. I usually ride the greenway once a month but biking there more than that may be a good way to get variety. I rode my Lynskey R300 bike today starting at 9:51 AM, somehow I got on the road before 10 AM. So far in 2020 I biked Spring Creek Greenway 6 times. Today the route went 45.22 miles, the longest try this year. I was back home at 1:42 PM.

8-6-2020 YTD Bike Rides Summary Today's Route

One of the advantages of the greenway is the extensive shade which comes in handy on a sunny day like today. The wind wasn’t strong enough among the trees to present much of a headwind. Biking the greenway is different from streets and roads. On roads and streets you change direction, stop for traffic lights, and get out in the open where wind can get at you. On the greenway biking seems slower but there are few stops so I pedal much more and resting not as much. I think cyclists who have not ridden there might be surprised how hard it can be over the distance from US59 to I-45. I think my overall average speed of 13.0 mph reflects some of the effect of biking on the greenway. Many twists and turns plus the 15 mph speed limit add to the difference biking there.

I think there were more bikes out today which may be the result of the construction being gone at the Carter Park trailhead area.

I drank most of my CamelBak water by the time I finished. It stayed cold until about mile 40 when the heat took over from the shade. Weather conditions: start 88 (78% humidity, 80.1 dew point), partly cloudy, wind SW 5 mph. Finish 93 (62% humidity, 78.4 dew point), partly cloudy, wind SE 8 mph. I took a short rest stop at John Pundt Park on the return leg to eat a Clif Bar and drink some cool water. Later at Carter Park trailhead I stopped for a restroom break.

The GoPro Hero 7 Black camera froze two times when I wanted to take video. Pulling the battery out got it started again. I am beginning to wonder if the microSD card might be the problem. I will try a different one.

I earned three 2nd place ribbons for my ride on Strava. Link to my activity page on Strava.
