About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

White lines? Cyclists need more

www.itsinternational.com

Just painting lines on the road isn’t sufficient to persuade most people to cycle – you need to separate them from motor vehicles altogether. David Arminas talks to transportation engineer Tyler Golly about the Covid ‘wake-up call’

For many city dwellers, choosing cycling rather than other mobility methods in North America has taken on a more poignant aspect during the Covid pandemic. Cyclists feel safer to not be in the close confines of buses, trams, trains and other forms of public transit, despite transit operators doing their best to enforce a form of social distancing.

But the groundwork for safer cycling had already been laid by many North American cities before the …

… That “strong and fearless” group of cyclists doesn’t mind. “They likely don’t realise, though, that they have an elevated stress level in their brains and bodies but they can manage that,” Golly explains. “Most people can’t. Getting the not-so-strong-and-fearless to feel safe is what I have been doing here in Edmonton, in Calgary, Victoria, Auckland, Houston, Boston and Winnipeg.” …

Mike arrived in Laredo, Texas in 1986 and with the help of his brother John, founded ProBike on June 4th of that year. Route Variety Needs Spice, A New Road, Advancing Toward My Goal

Texbiker.net Posted on August 5, 2020 by Rick AnkrumAugust 5, 2020

Biking almost every day makes finding a variety of routes challenging. Today was no exception as I started at 10:02 AM riding my Canyon Endurace CF SLX bike. I chose what I label the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route and rode 35.64 miles. I discovered a tiny variation on Monday and repeated it today. A new subdivision opened a month ago with a new road where dirt existed before. Kelly Road was a pot holed street ending at the edge prior to this new development but now a new asphalt section connects between E. Knox St. and E. Martin Drive to the north. This comes in handy because at E. Martin Drive a traffic light helps riding across Loop 494. The video includes a clip about this.

Getting closer to my 800 mile goal for August continues with today’s mileage. My total miles for August now stands at 144.07. To reach my goal I need to average 25.8 miles every day of the month. For the 5th day my total should be 5 x 25.8 or 129 miles. I am ahead of that by 15 miles or 28.8 miles average per day. To allow for weather I need to build a cushion of miles.

Weather impacts biking in several ways. Today the temperature went up as the ride progressed but the wind stayed about the same. I drank most of the ice water my CamelBak held by the 12:46 PM finish. I sat on my patio for several minutes after the ride in the shade enjoying a breeze at times. Weather conditions: start 88 (78% humidity, 79.9 dew point), a few clouds, wind W 7 mph. Finish 93 (59% humidity, 76.3 dew point), a few clouds, wind S 7 mph.

As I wrote earlier route variety when I start from the same place is challenging. Today marks the 17th time on this route in 2020 putting it near almost number 1 after the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route. 13 times on my Canyon Endurace bike and 4 times on my Lynskey R300 bike. I know where the bumps and dips are along the route though. Yesterday I rode some streets in reverse and while I know the bumps and dips going the other direction they changed in the reverse. Golden Cheetah produces a chart of the routes showing count and bike.

Today’s route lands in the upper left below a route I ride less often and above one I ride more often. I am not sure how the position gets determined.

But, that was a couple months ago and the heat of summers seems to have reduced the flying bug population. So, I had myself a mighty …

Work Around Construction Zone, GoPro Can’t Take Heat, Arm Sleeve Slippage

Texbiker.net Posted on August 4, 2020 by Rick AnkrumAugust 4, 2020

Planning today’s bike ride I decided to go on a route I haven’t been on since July 30th, 2019. I ride most of the roads and streets on other routes but not in this combination. Starting at 10:38 AM riding the Canyon Endurace bike I began the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman Extended” route. To get through the construction work on FM 2100 south of FM 1960 I reversed the roads in the “extended” portion of the route going north of FM 1960 to FM 2100 and south on FM 2100 where I normally ride north. The construction on FM 2100 takes place on the east side of the north bound side while the west side remains clear of barriers and barrels. The video shows the work area. I will probably use this route often until the construction clears the shoulder riding north.

The route covered 34.08 miles helping me get back on track to reach my 800 mile goal for August. I need to average 25.8 miles per day and with today being the 4th I need to be at 103.2 miles. Today’s ride puts me at 108.44 miles so I am ahead of where I need to be. A cushion comes in handy when the weather keeps me off the bike.

August typical weather is in place. Rain tends to be in the late afternoon to evening well after my bike ride. Today’s weather at the start and 1:14 Pm finish: start 90 (70% humidity, 79.2 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind W 7 mph. 95 (57% humidity, 77 dew point), a few clouds, wind W 6 mph. The light wind is appreciated.

For some reason my left arm sleeve kept sliding down my upper arm. I think the elastic is stretched plus the jersey I wore today has tight sleeves making it hard to tuck the arm sleeve under like I normally do. I have a new pair of arm sleeves and it looks like its time to replace the old ones.

The new GoPro Hero 7 black froze today when I wanted to take video. I believe the heat from being in the sun is the cause. Now that I know it is still a problem stopping and pulling out the battery before it freezes will be on my mind as I ride. Picking the time and place may be a problem.

Some data from the ride.

  • average heart rate 128 bps
  • max heart rate 152 bpm
  • average cadence 67 rpm
  • max cadence 106 rpm
  • average power 95 watts
  • max power 482 watts
