About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Saturday Ride

Probably good that I was solo today. Lots of last-minute route adjustments. Kendall County must’ve peeped someone’s Strava heatmap because they’ve managed to screw up some of the most popular roads up there. Spanish Pass was all torn up. Tower and Big Joshua Creek were freshly chipsealed with piles of loose tire-eating gravel everywhere. Like I said, lots of rerouting. Still a perfect day in the saddle, though. Cloudy and cool in the morning but managed to route around the rain. Lots of beautiful scenery, too!

Sweet fancy moses!

As we headed out toward Edge Falls, we saw that there was a fairly good probability that we would encounter some rain. We did get thoroughly drenched, and it was unfortunate that Mark experienced three flats, and had to call his wife to pick him up. As always, Jeff remained calm and was thoroughly in control.

Apple Fritter Substitute, July Bike Rides Wrapup

Texbiker.net Posted on July 31, 2020 by Rick AnkrumJuly 31, 2020

July bike rides wrapped up with today’s bike ride. What a month of biking; Heat, rained on bike rides, COVID-19, a flat tire. What else could you ask for? Along with those things I enjoyed seeing nature as I rode my bike, waving and saying hi to fellow cyclists, and being outside. Today I biked 38.22 miles following what I call the “New Caney – Gene Campbell Road” route. I started at 10:28 AM after watching stage 4 of Vuelta a Burgos on Flobikes.com. With those miles July ended with 922.93 miles, the 4th month in a row at 900+ miles. My week totals 156.54 miles, close enough to 200+ that if I ride the next 2 days I could get to number. So far in 2020 I rode this route 11 times, with today being the longest by .3 of a mile. Of those 11 rides, 7 were on the Canyon Endurace (today) and 4 were on the Lynskey R300. A summary of the 11 rides.

Watch the video to learn about the apple fritter substitute.

7-31-2020 YTD Bike Rides Summary Today's Route

The last bike ride to the north ended in the rain but not today. Sunshine and heat accompanied me all the way. The wind at the start was a gentle 7 mph from the SW but as I rode to the finish it ramped up to 13 mph with 20 mph gusts from the SW. No wonder it was hard pedaling into the headwind on Gene Campbell Blvd. What the weather looked like during the ride: start 89 (76% humidity, 80.5 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SW 7 mph. Finish 95 (59% humidity, 78.2 dew point), partly cloudy, wind SW 13 mph gusts 20 mph. Even with the wind my average speed held at 14.1 to 14.2 mph for a long time.

During July I rode 27 days. 3 of the 4 days off were due to rain with the other as a rest day. Starting July I biked 11 days in a row before taking that rest day. I sat on the bike 68 hours, 22 minutes, and 51 seconds. My average ride distance was 34.18 miles. The shortest ride was on July 28th (11.3 miles because of rain) and the longest on July 9th (44.6 miles). A summary of July.

Professional cyclist finds a new career path on the gravel roads of Kanza

Mike Berard | www.redbull.com

From short-track criteriums to massive 200-mile gravel races, Austin, Texas racer Colin Strickland has made a transition that led to one of the sport’s biggest victories.

In June 2019, Colin Strickland—a relative newcomer to the world of gravel racing—showed up in Kansas and took the win in one of the most famous and grueling gravel races on the globe. Kanza is a 200-mile (321.8km) course and the now 34-year-old Strickland took the victory in less than 10 hours. A year later, we catch up with Strickland to find out how he did it, why he loves bikes, and where he’s headed next.

Red Bull: Last year, you won Kanza as a first-time contender. What makes this race—and your victory—so special?
