Wacky Weekend in Waco
Leslie Ethridge / Photos : Carla Jennings      texasbikeracing.com
This weekend, the Texas cyclocross community suffered in the most beautiful way possible. The Waco race is always a season highlight, promising to be equally amounts painful and fulfilling. When the folks at Texas Cross Syndicate get together with the fast racers of Squadra Di Servitori, incredible world events happen. Unlike last year’s freezing cold mud fest, the Gods of Texas Cyclocross granted us clear skies and highs in the 70s. With prime Texas Cross weather, numerous racers toed the line: ready.
From the moment each whistle blew, each rider sprinted towards the first hill, minds set on the holeshot. The starting section of pavement took you over a speed bump, into a right turn and then onto the first …

Dec 14 (Day 348) – Moving north in terrible wind, flamingo plans
bikingforbirds.blogspot.com
I started today in Kingsville, TX, and ended 83 miles later in Rockport. I had to take a frustratingly circuitous route in order to avoid Corpus Christie. A straight shot through the city would have required lots of riding on urban freeways where bikes are not permitted. It would have also required a number of dangerous bridge crossings. The city is also a bit of an industrial wasteland, so I wanted to avoid this after biking through a similar refinery-scape in Port Arthur, TX. …

Construction Underway on Red Arroyo Trail
by BillCullins      Team San Angelo
I was part of a 25-person group of San Angelo residents who met on June 4th, 2004 to begin discussing current and future needs for non-motorized transportation infrastructure such as bike/pedestrian paths and trails in San Angelo.
This forward-thinking group realized that San Angelo lagged far behind other communities related to bike paths, sidewalks and related venues for cycling, running and fitness.
Subsequent meetings of that group, working with the regional Metropolitan Planning Organization, resulted in San Angelo’s City Council contracting with the Wilber Smith Associates consultant group to develop a comprehensive Bike/Pedestrian plan for the city (sanangelompo.org/plans.php).
The consultant group’s report listed the construction of a multiuse bike and pedestrian trail through the Red Arroyo ‘greenbelt’ area as being one of the first projects that San Angelo residents wanted the city to complete.
More than a decade after the initial focus group meeting was held, construction has …
More trails coming to greenway dividing Montgomery, Harris counties

Spring Creek’s white sandy beaches are lined with trees, some dating back to the Akokisa Indians, along with a plethora of native plants. It’s a largely untouched haven with a diverse collection of wildlife.

Dec 15 (Day 349) – Whoop, there it is!
bikingforbirds.blogspot.com
Those well-versed in 90’s hip hop should immediate recognize the reference in the title. Those lacking rap knowledge might want to check this out so that we are all on the same page. Anyone in his/her mid 30s should recognize this song from any middle or high school dance he/she ever attended. Although the track is called “Whoomp! (There it is)”, it actually sounds more like “Whoop! (There it is)”. When I found the first Whooping cranes of the day, I could not help but think “Whoop – There it is!”. Finding the cranes today was very straightforward. I biked the ~9 miles from Rockport, TX to Goose Island. I immediately headed for the “Big Tree”, a very large and ancient oak that guards a particular field that the Whooping cranes frequent. When I rolled up there were 2 adults and a young crane foraging in this field. I was also able to locate 3 additional crane pairs in the surrounding marsh for a …
Cycle For Good: Sunday, December 21
shalomaustin.org
Every year, Cycle for Good raises money for local JCCs and gives a portion to a designated charity chosen by JCC Association, the leadership network for the JCCs of North America. For 2014, the designated charity is Etgarim: Israel’s Association for the Disabled. Each participating JCC will choose what portion of the money raised will go to Etgarim, with a minimum set at twenty percent.
On the first Sunday of Chanukah, join the JCCs of North America for a spin during the 3rd Annual Cycle for Good. Participants across North America will be riding at the same time, cycling to raise money for a good cause and their own …
Team Ride on the NETT | An Unexpected Journey
by turnerwinstonoc      beardedwomenracing.org
By Jonathan Braddick
Four hardy souls left Farmersville, TX on Saturday, December 13th to ride a rare jewel in these parts of North Texas, the North East Texas Trail. After downing a couple of pastries brought on her own accord, Susie Bolton a huge NETT supporter, we headed off on the 75 mile expected journey to Paris.
We’ve highlighted the North East Texas Trail or NETT in the past when 4 of us decided to take part in Spinistry’s first Ride the NETT event in November of 2013. Back then something about the trail ignited a passion within us for it’s beauty, wildness, and potential economic impact it can have on the communities it’s 230 miles travel through.
We set a hardy 12 mile an hour pace for the first 20 – 30 miles which are very passable, locally groomed by either the city or passionate supporters and do gooders who see the positive things the …
