About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Austin Energy says e-bike rebate program on track to double in size

by Kali Bramble | www.austinmonitor.com

As retailers brace for the holiday shopping season, 2023 is shaping up to be a good year for e-bikes in Austin.

Austin Energy stopped by City Council’s Mobility Committee meeting last week for an update on its e-bike rebate program, which kicked into high gear this past January with a resolution doubling rebate values. Preliminary data shows a spike from 2,606 to 3,464 participants since the increase, though staff say the final figure will likely be much higher.

“We typically run on a 60- to 90-day lag in application processing, just because of volume and a small operations staff,” said electric vehicles and emerging technologies manager Cameron Freberg. “We expect to more than double our participation since last year, just from that increase in incentive and the amount of new vehicles available in the market.”

The rebate program dates back to 2013 but has seen significant growth since the 2018 passage of …

TxDOT Wants Your Input About Loop 286

easttexasradio.com

PARIS – The Texas Department of Transportation today reminded Texans that the public comment period for two proposed improvement projects on State Loop 286 in Lamar County remains open through December 15.

The agency began studying long-term improvements to this roadway in 2018 and has shared both proposed projects with the public at open-house public meetings.

The Northeast Loop project would begin at Stillhouse Road and extend to Pine Mill Road. It would expand the roadway from two lanes to two high-speed, non-stop lanes and two low-speed, controlled access frontage roads in either direction. It would also add an overpass at North Collegiate Drive and improve safety by adding lighting, better drainage, and paths for bicycles and pedestrians.

This project would require additional right-of-way and, subject to …

Commute + after work ride w/the hogs Houston, Texas

John Yoder | strava.com

A pack of wild hogs ran right through me. Locking up both wheels, I somehow managed to maneuver through them without falling and lightly glazing only one of them

Pop A (with Pop B) Richardson, Texas

Arthur Westover | strava.com

Before the ride started the A and B guys got together and made a pact to ride together. Beads were exchanged and the peace pipe was smoked. But we know how this story goes. LOL. Actually it was only a few guys that rode off the front. The rest of us stayed together on the A route. Nice and chilly. Paceline on Murphy. Credit to Rudy for keeping things together.

I looked down at one point and my computer had stopped recording, not sure why. So I’m missing a couple of miles.

Make Mine Flat, Better Yet A Triple Flat Loops

Texbiker.net Posted on November 28, 2023 by Rick AnkrumNovember 28, 2023

The Watopia Triple Fat Loops route is one I ride several times because the distance is not too long and the elevation gain is not too high. The cooler weather continued today moving the ride indoors. This was the ninth ride on the Triple Flat Loops. The distance was 21.36 miles with 515 feet elevation gain. There were 2 small KOM’s and two sprints. The name comes from the route going around three of Watopia’s flat routes. Before the ride I did a spin down on the Wahoo Kickr Core since I haven’t done one in awhile. My legs were good and the climbs weren’t hard enough to get out of the saddle. The photos above show some of the turns on the route.

John Gibbons obituary, 1987-2023, Dallas, TX

obits.dallasnews.com

GIBBONS, John “Jack” Edward went to his heavenly home far too early on Nov. 19, 2023, at the age of 36. Jack was born on March 19, 1987, in Dallas to Mary Lou and David Gibbons. He was a curious and joyful child, qualities that followed him throughout his life. Jack’s sense of humor, generous nature and infectious, welcoming smile resulted in an extensive circle of friends from all facets of his life. Jack’s light continues to shine through his adoring daughter Ann “Annie” Whittaker Gibbons, who shares her daddy’s curiosity and wide smile. Jack was a loving father to Annie, and he was determined to give her the world. A natural adventure seeker, Jack was sure that the biggest adventure of his life would be raising Annie with his devoted wife Sarah (Boynton) Gibbons. …

… An avid cyclist, Jack loved to be on the bike in nature, especially around White Rock Lake – or en route to a morning treat at Mustang Donuts. Jack said the miles on the bike were meditative and gave him time to pray. Even though Jack could make long rides look effortless, he encouraged everyone he knew to get on a bike and join him, no matter how much stronger he was as a cyclist. He was just happy to take in the fresh air and share his love of cycling with a new friend. We have no doubt that Jack is leading the Tuesday morning ride in Heaven, joyfully pulling new friends along. Jack was sentimental and reflective. …

Zwift Greatest London Flat, Not One Of Those Other Routes

Texbiker.net Posted on November 27, 2023 by Rick AnkrumNovember 27, 2023

Today’s Zwift ride moved to London on the Greatest London Flat, not to be confused with the Greater London Flat, the Greater London Loop, or the Greatest London Loop. I didn’t remember or know there were so many similar named routes until I checked ZwiftInsider.com. According to Zwift I previously rode the Greatest London Flat but SportTracks didn’t show any rides. I reviewed the previous “London” rides in SportTracks and changed the names on some previous rides until seeing the similar names on ZwiftInsider.com. Then I looked at the “London” rides in Strava, corrected the changes I made and found 2 other rides on the Greatest London Flat route. The other 2 are longer distances because I rode events that were timed rather than just the route distance.

I chose this route because it was relatively flat, 552 feet elevation gain according to the Zwift description, and not starting until 2:42 PM. There was some serious climbing though with 15% grades causing me to get out of the saddle and crawl up virtual road. The profile doesn’t show that gradient. My legs got a workout. Overall I got a Strava 3rd fastest time on Greatest London Flat (52:16).
