Today is the one year anniversary of the passing of Rick Ankrum, Founder of texbiker.net. He was tragically killed on 9/18/2024 when he was hit by a car while cycling in Houston, Texas. Today our family honors him, as we continue to deal with our grief and the shock of having lost him in such a devastating and sudden manner. Words cannot express how profoundly he is missed. Cycling was his passion, so in his memory we offer his favorite saying, “Let’s ride!”.
We sat down with our TTC Coordinator, Collin Hill, and our ’24 season Top Coach, Travis Loy from the Hays County Stingers, and got the inside scoop on Texas NICA Teen Trail Corps.
What does teen trail corps mean to you?
Collin: TTC to me, is a way to get students involved in the cycling community as a whole, through trail building and maintenance. It’s also a great opportunity to get students involved in trail advocacy. Off road cycling and mountain biking will completely go away if the next generation of cyclists don’t step up and get involved in taking care of trails.
Travis: I see TTC as an opportunity to take students out and let them see the work it takes to maintain the environment that they need in order to ride, race, and enjoy cycling. Hopefully they see the work that it takes, and really light a fire in the next generation. It is also a way to get more youth working on trails as opposed to older generations, who will at some point have to stop working.

Alice’s note: This story first appeared in my blog The Bright Lights of Muleshoe on September 10, 2024. I always wondered about the young man who rode all over town on his bike. And now I know the whole story.
A familiar sight for many years in Muleshoe was Francisco “Frank” Garcia, known as Panchito to many people, intrepidly peddling his bike all over town, rain or shine, snow or sun. Panchito passed away on August 29, 2024, in Plainview, and …

KENDALL COUNTY, Texas – As a way to bring a sense of normalcy to women and children who have survived an abusive relationship, the Kendall County Women’s Shelter is collecting new or gently used bikes for their clients.
“For our adult clients, it is a great form of exercise, or it helps them get to a new job they just got,” said Emma Collar, the communications coordinator for the shelter. “They can get around and do things like that. And then, for our children, it is a fun gift. I remember when I was a child getting my first bike and riding it around, so this would be our gift for them.” …

In car-centric Texas, the capital city is building a cycling utopia by investing millions in new infrastructure.
On one of the last cool mornings in May, Kari Kuwamura mounted a bicycle at Spokesman South to lead a casual group ride up South Congress to City Hall, joining more than 3,200 other Austinites in National Bike to Work Day. Across the city, local businesses hosted “fueling stations” to support Austin’s two-wheeled commuters with tacos and coffee. Feeling safe alongside cars wasn’t instantaneous when Kuwamura first started riding, and as the executive director of the nonprofit Ghisallo, their work focuses on helping novice cyclists build that same confidence. Surrounded by fellow riders, the biking advocate felt a surging sense of appreciation at just how far Austin has come in the last decade as the city makes strides to become a haven for cyclists.
Normally, when Kuwamura is on two wheels, you’ll find them on a trail. The reasoning: “I want to …

Sat 9/21/24 The Bagel Ride 7:30am ride start Starts behind Little Woodrow's, 12601 Tech Ridge Blvd, Austin TX 78753 52mi (83km). Store stop at 24mi.https://t.co/HXD4GYcT1X
From a seldom used route yesterday to a frequently route today: Atascocita – Walden – Huffman. The start came later than I expected rolling away at 10:49 AM on my Canyon Endurace CF 7 bike. The summer weather still hung around but the sky was gorgeous and the wind light at 4 mph. My legs though were not as powerful as yesterday. I stopped for a rest at a bench just south of the FM1960 underpass on the Atascocita Hike and Bike Trail. It was in the shade and called out to me as I neared. How could I resist? The light breeze felt good and my legs appreciated the break, I think.

I pried myself off the bench and headed to Walden. Crossing Farmingham Road I continued on a short section of the trail to Cross Country Drive. This was the first time riding this section in this direction. The concrete trail is a recent addition. When I arrive at FM1960 it was time to ride east over Lake Houston, south on Fairlake Lane, and Old Atascocita Road. At FM2100 I turned left towards Huffman and FM1960. As I rode north the wind seemed to change directions challenging my legs with each move. At the FM1960 traffic light a man was passing out flyers and asking for donations. We’ve chatted before and he asked how far I was riding today and how much was left. I answered “about 11 miles” and he replied that was less than the 12 miles I said the last time. He told me to have a good day as the light changed and I rode on.
Riding west on FM1960 was not not my fastest time with the breeze taxing my legs when I was out in the open. Once I moved to Atascocita Shores Drive the wind was buffered by the terrain, houses, and trees. I stopped at the Kings River Pool in the shade to rest the legs and drink cold water while resting. A little over 5 miles left in the ride. The next stop was on the W. Lake Houston Parkway bridge where it goes up for boat traffic.
Looking East from the W Lake Houston Parkway bridge
Despite the lackluster legs my overall average speed hit 13.2 mph until I was on the greenbelt at Magnolia Cove Drive going north. Only about 3.5 miles left. I finished at 1:52 PM.

Officials with the Houston-based nonprofit A Tale of Two Bridges are looking to raise $10,000 to plant trees along a stretch of the Heights Hike and Bike Trail in early 2025.
Two-minute impact
A Tale of Two Bridges was founded by Heights resident Emmanuel Nunez in 2022 with the goal of making neighborhoods more walkable and connected. Its name is derived from past advocacy to build two new bridges over White Oak Bayou for pedestrians and cyclists that use the Heights Hike and Bike Trail and the White Oak Bayou Trail.
Now, Nunez is looking to use the group for a new tree-planting effort that would add roughly 200 trees along the Heights Hike and Bike Trail between Lawrence and Yale streets, an area he said lacks sufficient shade. …

Gerry – rest day
Vinny -I rode 90 miles without any services or shade. Got on the road at 5am. Very little wind for the first 3 hours of which I covered half the route. Unfortunately the next 5 hours were not as pleasant as the winds and temperatures rose. At least I didn’t experience any flats today.
