About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Wednesday On Zwift Watopia’s Waistband ( A Lot of W’s)

Texbiker.net Posted on January 25, 2023 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 25, 2023

For some reason I have an aversion to riding a route too often in Zwift but on the road I might repeat the same route a couple of times in a week. Today I rode the Watopia’s Waistband route for the 7th time, maybe the route I rode the most in Zwift. I started the ride at 1:39 PM after messing around on my computer for too long.I wasn’t alone in Zwift when I opened the companion app 25,490 other people were there.

Outside the weather was 50 degrees under mostly cloudy skies and a NW 13 mph wind. This was below my comfort threshold for riding outside.

Reading the route description in Zwift I thought the distance was 15.8 miles with 312 feet of climbing and no lead-in. Starting the ride the banner at the top of the screen showed 17.2 miles. ZwiftInsider.com shows the route distance at 15.8 miles plus a 1.5 mile lead-in and 312 feet of climbing. My ride came in at 17.38 miles and 335 feet of climbing. The route is mostly flat with the elevation on rolling hills. There was a nice descent around 8km.

I did not try to match my personal record for the Fuego Flats sprint. My pace partner was out front but not too far.

Below is the ride history from SportTracks.

Some Jungle Dust Today. The Watopia Jungle Circuit

Texbiker.net Posted on January 24, 2023 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 24, 2023

No connection dropout on today’s Zwift ride thanks to connecting to my desktop computer’s Bluetooth. I was late riding today from messing around on my computer. Outside it was starting to rain heavy as a new front moved in so not any decision on riding outside.

I chose the Watopia Jungle Circuit for the ride. The last time I rode it was January 23, 2022. With the name “Jungle” I switched to the mountain bike. The lead-in was on paved roads making me think I made the wrong bike choice but the dirt appeared finally. Then I wondered, maybe the gravel bike would’ve been better. No stopping to change bikes though. I rode at a good pace setting a personal record on the second lap on the Jungle Loop thanks to my pace partner and some hard pedaling. I rode the lead-in and then 2 laps on the Jungle Loop for a total of 13.61 miles and 607 feet of climbing. The climbing was up one hill twice with some fast downhills afterward. I rode two laps to get more than 10 miles to make it an “official” ride.

The matched rides from Strava is different from the ones I have in SportTracks.

Opinion: 11th St. rebuild is destroying the fabric of our neighborhood

Letters to the Editor | www.houstonchronicle.com

Mayor Sylvester Turner talks to Bob Stein as he speaks with Heights area residents while taking a closer look at 11th Street, after plans to change traffic patterns on the street, including adding a bicycle lane, that drew some alarm from residents Wednesday, May 25, 2022 in Houston. Brett Coomer, Houston Chronicle / Staff photographer

Heights rebuild

Regarding "Editorial: Why would Houston want to rebuild roads to slow cars down?" (Jan. 18): In the editorial, you write, "The frustration of NextDoor commenters about the 11th Street rebuild is understandable.” The frustration isn’t about having to wait an extra light or two, as the mayor pointed out in approving this project. The frustration is about the safety issues this rebuild causes for the residents of the Heights. From the beginning, residents were concerned about the amount of cut-through traffic this will create. Drivers frustrated about waiting on 11th Street will divert to residential streets where families ride bikes, people walk dogs and children play.

Another big safety concern is the …

The HHH start has become a lot more efficient and safer since the first one in 1982, when cyclists (riding different distances) crowded together at the stadium, and then took off on their merry way (once the cannon boomed.)
