About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Rice University Cycling Team Restarts After 10 Year Absence

Texbiker.net Posted on December 8, 2007 by Rick AnkrumDecember 8, 2007

from the Rice Thresher (full article link)

By Jocelyn Wright | Thresher Editorial Staff

It often seems like most biking on campus is either in a rush to get to class or is preceded by Beer. But Rice’s long-dormant Cycling Team is starting to put campus peddlers back into competition.

The year-round club, started by Baker College senior J.C. Zapata and Brown College sophomore Jasper Yan this semester, meets several times a week to bike around Houston.

Yan said the team was an effort to revive Rice’s cycling team, which was extremely active about ten years ago and had road races with the University of Texas, Texas A&M and the University of Houston. Although the team has existed since then, it became less active over the years until Yan and Zapata decided to revive it this year.

The Hill Country is considered a rare jewel in the eyes of Lone Star State bicyclists—and more and more riders from outside the state are learning why. Join us on this tour showing off some of the best riding the region has to offer — and America has to offer in the spring–time.

Imagine crystal-clear streams cutting shallow valleys through oak-covered hills criss-crossed with lightly traveled, paved roads. In the springtime, the roadsides are absolutely covered with wildflowers, including Texas bluebonnets, Indian blanket, and paintbrush. Temperatures can range from the thirties to the eighties, but most likely we’ll see fifties at night, warming into the seventies during the day.

UT cycling group fights cancer one mile at a time

Texbiker.net Posted on December 7, 2007 by Rick AnkrumDecember 7, 2007

from The Daily Texan (link to full article)

By Jennilee Garza

More than 160 Texas bicyclists who have ridden the extensive and sometimes grueling trip from Austin to Anchorage, Alaska, made a much shorter trip to Austin City Hall Thursday morning.

The bicyclists, dressed in burnt-orange and white jerseys, presented a $50,000 check to the American Cancer Society. The bicyclists are part of Texas 4000 For Cancer, a four-year-old program that raises money for cancer research by asking for donations for each mile of their 4,500-mile journey. In honor of their accomplishments, Mayor Will Wynn declared Dec. 6 "Texas 4000 Day."

"It’s the best thing I’ve ever done in my entire life," said Amy Albin, who participated in this year’s Texas 4000.

Pearland is one step closer to becoming more biker and hiker friendly

Texbiker.net Posted on December 7, 2007 by Rick AnkrumDecember 7, 2007

from the Pearland Journal (link to the full article)

City Council on Monday approved architect services for the first phase of Pearland’s Trail Connectivity Project.

Construction of the two-mile trail that traverses the city is slated to start within the next seven to eight months.

The project’s first phase includes about two miles of a 10-foot wide concrete hike and bike trail that begins at Centennial Park on the south side of Mary’s Creek and travels west to Manvel Road (FM 1128). In addition to the trail, the plan calls for bridges to cross Mary’s Creek, 10 informational kiosks, landscaping along the trail and 20 picnic tables.
