About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Avoided No Longer, Zwift Three Little Sisters

Texbiker.net Posted on December 26, 2022 by Rick AnkrumDecember 26, 2022

Up to now I have avoided the Watopia “Sisters” routes because of the climbing. Today I tackled the easiest of the Sisters routes. This is a “free ride”, not an event. No hovering leader’s beacon. Before the ride I did a spin down in Zwift and after the ride I did 3 spin downs using the Wahoo Utility app on my phone. The resistance during the ride was harder than I think is right. Going downhill the few times I did on the route the pedaling effort was still high. The next ride in Zwift will see if the spin downs make any difference.

The ride began at 1:10 PM and lasted 1:29:01, about a minute less than Zwift suggested it would in the ride description. The ride was 23.69 miles long with 1,424 feet of climbing. I think that is the most climbing I’ve done in a long time in Zwift. Checking SportTracks I climbed 1,471 feet riding Zwift on February 26th, 2022 on the Yorkshire Royal Pump Room 8 route. Searching SportTracks I found the most Zwift climbing was January 15th, 2021 on the Watopia Mountain route at 1,993 feet. That is a lot of climbing for me. The flat terrain around Houston doesn’t have much climbing.

Before deciding on the Three Little Sisters I went to ZwiftInsider.com to see what I was getting into. The description: “Originally published as a Rebel Route by Zwift Insider in February 2020, “Three Little Sisters” was suggested by Zwifter Gene Kruger. He named it in homage to Zwift’s official “Three Sisters” route which takes us over the Hilly, Volcano, and Epic KOMs. Three Little Sisters, in contrast, takes us over the Hilly, Titans Grove, and Volcano KOMs – in that order. Each new climb is longer than the one before, and we take the shortest possible route to get from climb to climb. Zwift’s February 2022 update included this route as an event-only route that awards an achievement badge. The April 2022 update then made this route free ridable.” The route basics showed no lead-in, distance of 23.4 miles, and climbing 1,316 feet. Not sure where my extra 108 feet came from. I would have preferred to have climbed less.

Around the 10 mile mark I chuckled watching a bear climbing a tree, falling, and rolling on the ground. Glad he didn’t chase any Zwifters passing by. There were some Christmas decorations, trees with lights, and a sled in the sky. There may have been others that I missed.

While enduring the uphills and downhills I listened to SiriusXM Seventies on 7 music. The tempo helped me keep my cadence steady.

I rode some of the Strava segments on other rides based on these two results: 2nd fastest time on Volcano Descent (4:26) and 3rd fastest time on Volcano KOM (15:53). Strava shows 6 segments for the route. I wish the weather listed on Strava was the weather where I am. It is not 79 degrees but 59 degrees here.

Zwift Christmas Day in Paris on Lutece Express

Texbiker.net Posted on December 25, 2022 by Rick AnkrumDecember 25, 2022

Christmas Day bike ride in Zwift before fixing a late lunch or early dinner. I looked to ride in the France world without creating a meetup but France was not on the open worlds. I created a meetup on the Paris Lutece Express route. There is a 2.2 mile lead-in and each lap is 4.1 miles so I set the distance to 12.2 miles. For me an official bike ride is at least 10 miles and this met that criteria. Each lap climbed 108 feet according to the route information from ZwiftInsider.com and I climbed 384 feet. Subtracting the lead-in miles that leaves 10 miles on the route or 2.44 laps. Calculating the expected climbing with the 108 feet spread evenly over the 4.1 miles the climbing should be 264 feet and I rode an extra 120 uphill. There was 1 sprint per lap just beyond the top of the biggest climb. To help me on the ride I listened to SiriusXM Holiday Traditions music.

I think I made a mistake before beginning the ride. After pairing my smart trainer to Zwift I clicked on the wrench not remembering what that did. That is a spin down to calibrate the trainer. I didn’t do the spin down but when I started the ride the resistance was significantly harder than my last ride. That compensated for the shorter ride, I guess.

This was my first time on this route but I actually rode the reverse of it on January 25th, 2022, the Champs-Élysées route. That time I rode 10.3 miles.

ZwiftInsider.com route information: “Paris’ Lutece Express route is simply the reverse version of the iconic Champs-Élysées route created for the first-ever Virtual Tour de France. It runs in a clockwise direction, giving riders a chance to experience a virtual version of the most recognizable avenue in the world: the Avenue des Champs-Élysées in Paris.”

Today ended my week of riding. I rode Zwift each day for a total of 124.13 miles. December riding totals 404.81 road + Zwift miles. Year to date totals 9,344 miles road and Zwift miles. I trail 2021 YTD by 64 miles and lead 2020 by 143 miles.

The initial giveaway on December 10th saw 300 bicycles given to kids in the community, but another 250 kids went home empty-handed.(KBTX)

NAVASOTA, Texas (KBTX) – A bicycle giveaway put on by the non-profit Men Making Moves earlier this month was so popular there weren’t enough bikes for the kids who showed up. The initial giveaway on December 10th saw 300 bicycles given to kids in the community, but another 250 kids went home empty-handed.

Friday, the group was able to pull off what organizers call “a Christmas miracle” and it was able to give away another 253 bicycles to the kids who did not get one during the first giveaway.

Salvation Army of Hunt County assists families at Christmas through Angel Tree program

By Brad Kellar | www.heraldbanner.com

A long line of cars wound southbound along Stonewall Street in Greenville on the morning of Dec. 19, each pausing briefly in front of the Mendoza’s Party Rentals building.

Upon arrival, someone from the vehicle would either walk into the building or hand a volunteer a card, and a few moments later the volunteer would reappear, carrying a bag full of items and, every so often, something even bigger.

“That’s it, that’s the bike I wanted!” screamed a young boy from the back seat of one of the vehicles as the smiling volunteer loaded it into the trunk of the car.

The occasion was the …
