About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Zwift Riding With The HERD on Watopia Two Bridges Loop

Texbiker.net Posted on January 11, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 11, 2022

Another chilly day outside so I looked for a Zwift ride. (55 degrees when I started today) I thought stage 2 of the tour de Zwift would be one of the events but I only found stage 1 which I rode yesterday. The HERD Tuesday Social Ride looked good so I signed up. The 11:55 AM start rolled around and I thought I had all the technical parts connected to Zwift but my cadence sensor was not connected. Yesterday I moved the cadence sensor from the left crank arm because my shoe was rubbing on it. The spot was my left shoe but I did not orient it in the right direction. The ride started when I figured this out so I repositioned the sensor on my left shoe and all was good. It didn’t show up in the Zwift companion app but it did on my computer. With the dealy I missed several minutes and rode alone until the front flyers lapped me.

I rode the Watopia Two Bridges Loop once before on 12/31/2020 but only one lap. According my notes I was trying a method to connect two routes in one ride. I don’t think it worked. Today’s ride was 60 minutes rather than distance based. ZwiftInsider.com describes the course, “Introduced in Zwift’s December 2020 update, Two Bridges Loop is the first route to use the new KOM Bypass – a short stretch of road which connects the Hilly KOM forward with the Hilly KOM reverse approximately halfway up each climb, effectively shortcutting both KOM segments. This route is simply an abbreviated version of the event-only Hilly Route Reverse, since we remove 2.1km of road and 20m of elevation gain by taking the KOM bypass.” There were a couple of short 10% climbs to test my legs. My left knee is still a little sore though after I “popped” it this morning the soreness decreased a lot. I think the flyers lapped me at least 3 times while I rode 14.7 miles and climbed 876 feet during my ride. I did score some Strava personal records thought.

Cantu: No reason we cannot build even more hike and bike trails in Hidalgo County

By Steve Taylor | riograndeguardian.com

SAN JUAN, Texas – Hidalgo County Commissioner Eddie Cantu would like to see more hike and bike trails established in his precinct, with a spur reaching out from his central hub into the cities of Hidalgo and Mission.

Cantu pulled off one of the major recreation improvement achievements of 2021 in Hidalgo County by building the five-mile Precinct 2 Inclusive Hike and Bike Trail. The trail is distinctive because it includes tunnels that allow those using the trail to avoid crossing busy roads.

“The City of Hidalgo has a two mile hike and bike trail. We are hoping to connect from Hidalgo at some point and take it north to McAllen. Kind of hit close to Quinta Mazatlan and perhaps even go …

Tour de Zwift 2022 Stage 1 on Watopia Waistband

Texbiker.net Posted on January 10, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 10, 2022

The Tour de Zwift began today. It was chilly outside so I signed up for stage 1 group C. The route was Watopia Waistband. At the 12:01 PM start I saw 2586 people at the starting pen. Zwift doesn’t show that many avatars at one time but it was a large number. Over the 17.33 miles (1 lap plus the lead-in) once the groups split up I settled in around 2400 out the 2586. I was glad I kept in that position. At the start my left knee was sore but once I warmed up I didn’t notice it. The 338 feet of climbing was spread out over the course, no steep hills.

I had some technical issues before the ride began but I got them resolved in time.

This was the 4th time riding the Waistband route since I started Zwifting. Last year’s ride longer and the average speed was slightly higher. I don’t think it was part of last year’s TdZ.

Only three Strava segments surprises me since this route has been around for awhile.

The Trailist: A balmy January day in Mud Creek Park

by Brendan Gibbons | sanantonioreport.org

Tucked away between residential subdivisions just south of Loop 1604, Mud Creek Park holds a trove of natural-surface trails that cover a surprisingly wide variety of terrain for such a small park.

My girlfriend, Jess, and I explored the park this week when temperatures dipped into the 70s after weeks of unseasonable mid-80s weather. The afternoon was brilliantly clear, with azure skies and intense sunlight that gathered in the golden grasses of Mud Creek Park’s many meadows. Jess and I loved the park’s open spaces, where trees haven’t yet overtaken the fields of prairie grasses, shrubs, prickly pear, and Spanish dagger. …
