About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Lots Of Dust On The Jungle Circuit Until Losing Contact

Texbiker.net Posted on December 16, 2020 by Rick AnkrumDecember 16, 2020

A change of pace for today’s Zwift event. I chose the ZHCC Sub 2 Gravel Rash on the Jungle Circuit. The ride started at 12:30 PM and lasted 60 minutes. This was the 3rd time riding the Jungle Circuit. Unlike yesterday’s Zwift ride the electricity stayed on for the whole ride. I ended up biking 14.59 miles putting me at 127.22 Zwift miles for December with a goal of 258 miles. Information about today’s ride.

  • 12-16-2020 ZHCC Gravel Rash info-1
  • 12-16-2020 ZHCC Gravel Rash info-2

Outside the weather continued to stay in the 40’s triggering my 60 degree threshold alert to not go outside. Maybe it will warm up by Saturday for an outdoor ride if the rain doesn’t arrive too.

I wore a new jersey for today’s ride. I received it from Ride Spot, a People For Bikes program. It’s a different design more suited for what some people call a “party pace” with two side pockets with zippers and buttons to close the neck opening.

  • 12-16-2020 Ride Spot Jersey front
  • 12-16-2020 Ride Spot Jersey back

As the ride started I stayed with the group and sometimes at the very front. A number of riders went through the fence but I held back only getting warned a couple of times to return. But around the 22 minute point when the group rode across the suspension bridge I wasn’t able to stay with the group going up the climb off the bridge. I tried to rejoin but the gap was too big and I rode solo to the finish except for a couple riders passing me.

Since it was the Jungle Circuit we rode mountain bikes. I think this affected my power output some but I still put out good numbers for me. Average power was 121 watts and max 256 watts. Yesterday I averaged 125 watts and maxed at 313 watts. Today 47% of the ride was in Zones 1 and 2 leaving 53% for zones 3 to 7. Yesterday 65% of the ride time was in zones 3 to 7.

The lower power output didn’t stop me from racking up a bunch of new personal records, 2nd place records and 3rd place records in Strava.

Spin Up, Spin Down Makes Big Difference In Staying With The HERD

Texbiker.net Posted on December 15, 2020 by Rick AnkrumDecember 15, 2020

The outside weather was not hospitable again today so I selected another Zwift ride. My outdoor biking threshold is 60 degrees and when I started today’s Zwift ride it was 46 with light rain. Not my kind of outside biking weather.

I perused the Zwift events and landed on The HERD Tuesday Social Ride group D. The course was the Volcano Flat with a 1.4 – 1.6 w/kg average. My kind of ride after my recent episodes of of low power. Start time was 11:55 AM which left me plenty of time to get set up.

After yesterday’s Zwift ride I did a spin up and spin down calibration of my Wahoo Snap smart trainer using the Wahoo Utility app. The app didn’t report any change so I was curious what today’s ride would show. I am happy to report my power output today was much closer to my road output. According to Golden Cheetah the average power improved to 125 watts and max to 313 watts. This compares to my latest road ride’s 111 watts and 442 watts. Yesterday’s Zwift ride was 81 watts and 213 watts.

The real test was if I could stay with the group. I stayed with the group and even crashed the fence several times until my electricity went off for about 2 minutes ending my ride at 49:53 of a scheduled 60 minute event. Bummer!!! Some shots during the ride.

With this improved ride I set several personal records, several 2nd places, and 3rd places on Strava.
