About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Now Is the Winter of Our Discontent: Cool Bikings

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.com

Austin, Texas, where A Dude Abikes abides, is not known for extremely cold winters. But the last two years, I’ve been much less resistant to cool temperatures. I’m not sure if that’s because I got in a freezing cold river in Vermont on a dare while visiting in 2017, the very hot summers have permanently thinned my blood, or something else. As one ages, resistance to cold is more common. But I’m not that old; nor has my skin thinned, nor have I lost a lot of body weight. Whatever is causing it, I wish I were warmer. To …

We don't need to accept the zero-sum framework of "pedestrians VS cyclists". Everyone can be better off if we think about how to improve access to trails for cyclists AND trails for pedestrians.

— BikeHouston (@BikeHouston) December 8, 2020

If pedestrians and cyclists have to compete for space that is a REAL problem. The solution is more access to dedicated transportation space. Forcing cyclists onto busy streets is not a viable solution and will lead to more cyclist deaths and less people getting outside in Houston pic.twitter.com/PfjLJ5uUf9

Waited For More Degrees For 1st December Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on December 7, 2020 by Rick AnkrumDecember 7, 2020

The last time I rode outside was November 25th, the day before Thanksgiving. Today I waited for the temperature to move above 60 degrees before beginning the ride at 12:24 PM. My Canyon Endurace bike almost forgot what is was to go outside. I bundled up with shorts, leg warmers, a wicking t-shirt, long sleeve thermal jersey, windbreaker jacket, and full finger gloves. I don’t care for chilly weather. My road mileage goal for December is 150 miles. The reason it is so low is the weather. To offset that I ride in Zwift when it is too cold to ride outside.

Today’s ride video is a short one. I used my handheld GoPro Hero 7 Silver for all of the clips. I wondered if I could press the record button on the Hero 7 Black with my gloves on. The wind blew the dead cat mic muff off the Comica mic but I quickly stopped and picked it up. I need to find a better way to keep it on the mic.

I chose the “Atascocita – Walden – E. Lake Houston Parkway” route for today’s ride. With a late start I didn’t want to go farther and risk the temperature dropping. I biked 28.12 miles, almost catching me up on the miles I was short to reach my goal so far, only 5.76 miles behind. Year to date I moved to 8,904 miles. I have never biked this many miles in a year. If I reach my road goal and add more Zwift miles I will hit 9,000+ miles.

With about 8 miles left in the ride I stopped to answer a text message and took this shot. The blue sky is terrific.

12-7-2020 Bike Ride Atascocita Shores Drive

My power output is much better on the road than in Zwift. Today my power output in zones 3 to 7 totaled 54% of the ride time. 16% was in zones 6 and 7. Strava said this ride was harder than my usual efforts to reinforce the difference. Below is the Golden Cheetah summary of the bike ride.

  • 12-7-2020 Golden Cheetah Bike Ride Data Summary-1
  • 12-7-2020 Golden Cheetah Bike Ride Data Summary-2

My Canyon Endurace now has 20,053 miles, accumulated since February 2018 when it arrived.

Fort Worth YMCA, Bike Gangs of Fort Worth to Provide Free Bike Repairs for Families

www.nbcdfw.com

The YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth is partnering with the Bike Gangs of Fort Worth to provide free bicycle repairs to children and families.

The bike repairs, called "rehabs," will take place on Saturday, Dec. 5 at 9 a.m. in the parking lot of the Northpark YMCA located at 9100 North Beach Street in Fort Worth.

The 100-bike rehab event is seeking volunteers to set up in socially-distanced stations and help to repair bikes to get back in an effort to encourage children and families to ride bikes and get outside.

Welcome to Texas

Seth Davidson | citsb.com

I crossed the state line just before noon; the road from Las Cruces to El Paso was flat and slightly downhill with very little wind. Still, the day had been bitingly cold and never got much above the mid 30s for most of the morning. Fortunately, I had a thick pair of wool gloves. They were made in Sweden, knitted triple thick, and able to keep out all of the cold, all of the time.

There was a small convenience store in Canutillo, so I pulled in, laid my gloves on the ledge, went in, and bought some beef jerky, Gatorade, and chocolate milk to go with my stale English muffins and pizza heartburn. Behind the convenience store it …

Keep San Angelo Beautiful completes many projects since it was created in February 2020, plants to finish the year with bicycle giveaway

by: Senora Scott | www.conchovalleyhomepage.com

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Keep San Angelo Beautiful organization, or KSAB, has only been around since February of this year, however, they’ve already made a big impact on the community.

On Friday, December 4, 2020, they announced they received a grant which will be used to extend their children’s program to include more education and a bicycle giveaway just in time for the holidays.

Charlotte Anderson is the Executive Director of KSAB. She says the organization has done a lot for the community despite being in the midst of a pandemic and only being operational for a short period of time.

“I think this vision has come to life, that Harry Thomas had, of bringing back our Keep San Angelo Beautiful programs. Our first Household Hazardous Waste event was just wonderful we had a great …
