About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

What A Welcome Back To Zwift, 7 Miles Up Innsbruck

Texbiker.net Posted on December 1, 2020 by Rick AnkrumDecember 1, 2020

When I got out of bed this morning around 6:45 AM the temperature outside showed 28.4 degrees. The forecast called for a high of 64 but I doubted it would get there in time to ride outside. I went to my Zwift account and restarted my subscription and looked for upcoming events. I found one that looked easy but the 11:55 AM start time was not too far away and I wanted to get everything checked before the ride began. After going over my bike, desktop computer and software it looked like the 11:55 ride was too soon so I cancelled that and chose another. But then I finished all the preparations and thought I joined the “Funride” but instead I joined the Innsbruck ride. It wasn’t long, 7 miles, but all uphill. What a welcome back to Zwift. Next event I choose I will look at the description closer.

A lot of the ride I rode 5 to 7 mph. I didn’t realize the event ended at the top as I looked forward to riding down those 7 miles. Usually I think a ride must be at least 10 miles to count but this at 7.03 miles counts because it took me 57 minutes to ride it.

This not the first time I rode Innsbruck in Zwift but the previous times were stage 1 and 2 of Tour de Zwift. I set 4 personal records according to Strava.

Red Line still building, but this time it is bike lanes in Northside

Dug Begley | www.houstonchronicle.com

A bicyclist pedals by as workers install a crosswalk on a bike lane near Cavalcade Street and the Interstate 45 frontage road on Nov. 17, 2020, in Houston. Metropolitan Transit Authority is extending the bike lane along Cavalcade Street from Irvington to Elysian as part of a $1.3 million project. This extends the existing bike lane which runs …

The belief that Northside Houston residents will bike to buses and trains if it is safer to do so is bringing more curb work to Cavalcade, paid for out the same pot of federal money that brought the neighborhood trains.

Metropolitan Transit Authority on Nov. 19 approved the use of nearly $1.3 million left over from building the Red Line light rail extension — which opened nearly seven years ago — to …

Bike Friendly Oak Cliff’s tweed ride livens up Dallas history

oakcliff.advocatemag.com

Original 7-Eleven

This building is now the Dallas office of the LULAC National Education Service Centers, which provides academic sup- port to 130 low-income students in Dallas ISD. About 90 years ago, it was the site of the first 7-Eleven. Oak Cliff-raised Joe C. Thompson Jr., known as “Jodie,” started as a stable boy for Consumer Ice Co. in the days before refrigeration, when ice boxes kept food cool. He later became director of Oak Cliff’s Southland Ice Co. John Jefferson Green operated the Southland-owned ice dock on Edgefield at Twelfth. In 1927, he had the idea to sell milk, eggs and bread from the dock, and the concept of a modern convenience store was born.

Kiest Park

The 263-acre park was donated to the City of Dallas in 1931 by Edwin J. Kiest, who was publisher of the Dallas Times Herald, and …

People on the DCTA Rail Trail now have a 10-second head start before turning traffic gets a green light at Mayhill & Edwards. At least one trail user was hit this year when a left-turning driver failed to yield at the crosswalk. This should help prevent that type of crash. pic.twitter.com/3yuOQzf0eA

Report safety concerns on the rail trail or elsewhere via the Engage Denton app: https://t.co/nNASEeY5vh. Please also reach out to Bike Denton, so we'll be aware of ongoing issues and can connect you with the right folks in the city.

I would also say: an example of cycle-unfriendly infrastructure. Isn't this the main reason why hardly anyone rides a bicycle in the #RioGrandeValley? Protected bike lanes and traffic-calming would help a lot and force motorists to slow down. pic.twitter.com/w9hnssNxz9

Millions of people have their first experiences on a bicycle as a child, and experienced the freedom it brings and the fun it allows. And yet so many folks are filled with bile toward adults who ride bikes—whether for utility, fun or fitness. They hate something they once loved.

— Peter Flax (@Pflax1) November 28, 2020

This is really a methods paper, but here are some findings:
Finding 1: Comparison of surveyed bicycle trip routes with modeled potential demand shows areas with large potential bicycling demand.

— Greg P. Griffin (@gregpgriffin) November 28, 2020

Overall, this paper will move network-based bicycle planning and prioritization research forward, but data savvy practitioners and programmers are needed to implement their findings.
