About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Rolling Video Production Studio, Great Weather, Good Legs – Bike Ride to Huffman

Texbiker.net Posted on November 12, 2020 by Rick AnkrumNovember 12, 2020

After yesterday’s successful video with good sound I moved the setup to my Lynskey R300 bike for today’s bike ride. The Lynskey’s handlebar stem allowed me to angle the Comica mic a little more upward toward my mouth to pickup my voice since the Comica is directional. I wondered how this would affect the audio on the bike ride. Listening to the edited video the audio improved slightly over yesterday. Now I need to replicate the angle on my Canyon Endurace for Friday’s bike ride. If you watch today’s video let me know what you think about the audio. There is a difference when I use the handheld Hero 7 Silver versus the Hero 7 Black with the Comica mic. Today’s video has 2 clips from the Silver but the majority of the video came from the Hero 7 Black. I’ve watched so many GoPro videos about mics on YouTube it pops up in the recommendation list. The camera and mic setup on the Lynskey today.

  • 11-12-2020 Lynskey R300 Camera and Mic Setup-3

Pushing the Bolt start button at 10:59 AM to begin the ride I set out on my “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route. But while the route name is familiar the roads I biked east of Lake Houston were a different set. I did not go on Fairlake Lane south of FM 1960 but continued to FM 2100 and made the u-turn east of the intersection to head back to Kingwood. This shortened the ride distance by about a mile to 31.02 miles. When the construction on FM 2100 reaches a point where I can bike there the original route configuration will return. Not sure when that will be but concrete is pouring in places.

I am within 23 miles of reaching my 360 mile goal for November. The weather has been very cooperative allowing me to ride 10 out of 12 days and 1 of the missed days I took as a rest day not a bad weather day. for the week the total stands at 133.87 miles. Based on the weather forecast I can ride each day so a 200 mile week looks possible.

11-12-2020 MTD Mileage Goal Status

Year to date mileage compared to previous years is now way beyond all the others. This graph shows the progression and delta between 2020 and the years starting in 2011.

11-12-2020 Strava Year Progressions YTD Miles

Performance on the bike ride according to Golden Cheetah summary data shows 46% of my power output fell in zones 3 through 7. Of the 46%, zones 6 and 7 contributed 11%. About the same as yesterday. This route has two long segments (about 3.5 miles each) on FM 1960 where I rode strong improving overall average speed. This came in laps 4 and 5. My legs felt a little tired but not enough to slow me down too much. Wind was light in both directions.

  • 11-12-2020 Golden Cheetah Bike Ride Summary Data-1
  • 11-12-2020 Golden Cheetah Bike Ride Summary Data-2

Weather conditions impact biking. Today I think it was favorable. I didn’t need to bundle up because it was warm. I wore shorts, long sleeve jersey, and a short sleeve jersey. Weather at the start and 1:20 PM finish: start 76 (60% humidity, 61.6 dew point), a few clouds, wind SE 6 mph; finish 82 (50% humidity, 61.2 dew point), a few clouds, wind E 7 mph. Sunshine ruled.

Can You Hear Me Now? Bike Ride to Roman Forest Blvd.

Texbiker.net Posted on November 11, 2020 by Rick AnkrumNovember 11, 2020

While the road racing season ended the European cyclocross is getting underway. As I ate breakfast I watched the men’s Jaarmarktcross Niel cyclocross race using my GCN Race Day Pass. My ride today was on dry concrete and asphalt not mud, sand, and grass they rode on. I chose a route heading north to Roman Forest Blvd. where I made the turn back to the south. I label this the “New Caney – Roman Forest Blvd – Oakhurst” route and it covered 32.36 miles improving the week’s total to 102.85 miles and the month to 306.41 miles. I will reach my November goal with 54 more miles. This was the 5th time biking the route in 2020 all on the same bike.

11-11-2020 YTD Bike Rides Summary On Today's Route

My monthly goal progress.

11-11-2020 MTD Mileage Goal Status

Before starting today I walked the driveway to pickup the recycling bin. It felt a little chilly so I decided today’s riding kit would be shorts, long sleeve thermal jersey, and a short sleeve jersey. After getting dressed and other things ready I rolled away on my Canyon Endurace bike at 11:31 AM. I returned to the start at 2:05 PM, biking 2:18:13 and overall 2:33:50.

A major goal for today’s bike ride: test 2 different microphones using the GoPro Hero 7 Black and mic adapter to improve the sound quality of the video. Listen to today’s video, I think it improved. The test used the Comica directional mic with a dead cat muff until I made the turn at Roman Forest Blvd. At that point I changed to a generic lapel mic attached to my helmet strap below my chin. I changed back to the Comica mic at the Stripe station at FM 1314. Both mics improved the sound over yesterday but I think the Comica mic was the better sound. I ordered a different GoPro mount for my Lynskey R300 bike to move the camera above the computer but the mic setup will be similar to the Canyon. Two changes from yesterday: dead cat wind muff, and angled the mic up toward my mouth more. The Comica is directional so aiming it to where the sound comes from is important. Below are photos of today’s sound rig.

Good news on the road front with the Kelly Road resurfacing completed. Nice smooth asphalt where bumpy and cracked asphalt used to be.

Looking at the bike ride data summary from Golden Cheetah my power output repeated yesterday with 45% of the ride time spent in zones 3 through 7. Of the 45% zones 6 and 7 consisted of 11%. My max power came in at 467 watts. The summary from Golden Cheetah.

  • 11-11-2020 Golden Cheetah Bike Ride Data Summary-1
  • 11-11-2020 Golden Cheetah Bike Ride Data Summary-2

The above normal weather continued for today’s bike ride: start 76 (57% humidity, 59.7 dew point), a few clouds, wind N 7 mph; finish 81 (56% humidity, 64.1 dew point), fair, wind E 6 mph.
