About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Uptown to San Jacinto from bikehouston

Column: Cycling interest surges while supplies lag far behind

BY TIM WAITS | www.tdtnews.com

When friends and fellow cyclists Jack Jones, Rod Houston and Frank Jennings realized they were all 66 years old, they saw the Barrow Brewing Volks Ride last weekend as an opportunity to enjoy the Central Texas countryside together and celebrate their age with a circuitous 66-mile biking trek from Salado to Holland. There is nothing especially uncommon about that among dedicated cyclists, who are fit and healthy. For those guys — and most of us — it’s much more doable to cycle your age than it is to shoot your age in golf. “We’re blessed to live where we do,” said Jones, who is the District 146th judge in Bell County. “There’s not a place more appropriate for riding than the venues in this county. You can get out in the country on paved roads that are lightly traveled with different terrains. You have portions of the Hill Country, the Blackland prairie and rolling hills. …

Enjoyed by More Austinites Than Ever, the Hike-and-Bike Trail Plans for Growth

JAMES RAMBIN | austin.towers.net

Austin’s much-loved Hike-and-Bike Trail has likely never been so important as an outdoor recreation facility of choice for downtown dwellers, even with a few pandemic-related challenges — and judging by its heavy use even during this endless crisis, not to mention the continual growth of the local housing market in spite of economic uncertainty elsewhere, it’s important to keep in mind how the trail can best …

Determined To Ignore The Chill – Bike Ride to FM 2100

Texbiker.net Posted on October 24, 2020 by Rick AnkrumOctober 24, 2020

Determined to go biking today. The temperature went to 53 degrees overnight and seemed like it was going to stay there all day. I watched the temperature go up and down a degree on my home weather station until it got to 59.7. At that point rounding up put it at my threshold and I got dressed. No sun just cloudy which didn’t help it warm up either. Normally on Saturday I want to start riding before 9 AM but today I didn’t ride until 12:33 PM. I stuck to my usual Saturday route, “Atascocita – FM 2100 – Walden” riding my Canyon Endurace bike. I figured if any cyclists rode today they braved the chilly weather earlier and I wouldn’t see anyone. I did see 2 though.

The reason for my determination: ride 25 miles to make it a 200 mile week. I did that biking 31.13 miles and the week totals 206.32 miles. My month now totals 718 miles, 103 miles over my goal.

  • 10-24-2020 MTD Mileage Goal Status

Last night after watching a YouTube video about the GoPro Hero 7 Black, mic adapter, a case to hold them I changed the GoPro setup. I used the setup for today’s bike ride but the cheap mic did not pickup the consistently sound but recorded scratchy sound. A few times when my voice recorded the mic placement was good though. I need a better mic. The main change was mounting the mic on the stem rather than attaching it to my helmet strap. The setup.

My kit for the chilly weather: shorts, leg warmers, long sleeve thermal jersey, wind jacket, regular gloves. I wore regular gloves to operate the GoPro cameras and I thought my fingers would get cold but after I rode for 15 minutes I didn’t notice them being cold. Weather: start 60 (80% humidity, 53.5 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind N 12 mph; finish 67 (72% humidity, 58.1 dew point), partly cloudy, wind N 10 mph. The first cyclist I saw looked like he was dressed like me but the second one skipped the leg warmers.

According to Golden Cheetah’s analysis of my ride I spent 69% of the time in power zones 2 through 7. 10% in in zones 6 and 7.

Tour das Hugel with Rob D’amico and Ali Sobhani

Drop Bar, Texas: A cycling podcast By Paul | anchor.fm

Ask around if there are any Texas rides in November to do and you just might hear the Tour das Hugel come up. I’m still not sure what year it began. So, let’s just say it’s been around awhile. Rob D’amico and Ali Sobhani came on to discuss this 110 mile iconic Texas ride’s past, and how it’s happening again this year. Is it 10,000 feet or 14,000 feet of climbing? Why do people do it? Why is there SPAM at some rest stops? These are important questions that are answered here. Stick around at the end to see who is named in Feats of Glory.

Hike and bike along wild parts of Trinity at remote Dallas-area preserve

By Stacy Breen | fortworth.culturemap.com

Goat Island Preserve is what started my summer 2020 exploration of parks around Dallas-Fort Worth. I was at the Lakewood Farmers Market in Dallas, where I sell bread at the Empire Baking Co. stand, and this woman came up and was apologizing for being sweaty. She said she’d been hiking in Goat Island, which she said was great "because nobody was there." I said, "Tell me more." My friend and I went down the very next week.

Like Post Oak Preserve in Seagoville, Goat Island is part of the system set up by Dallas County to preserve natural wilderness areas. The street address is listed as …
