About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Right Bicep Soreness, Unwanted House Guest Laura

Texbiker.net Posted on August 25, 2020 by Rick AnkrumAugust 25, 2020

After my stay in the hospital I thought my legs would be sore when I started biking again. But my right bicep is sore. I didn’t realize how much I use my arms when biking especially into the wind. Maybe it is sore because that was the arm with the IV.

I set out on my Canyon Endurace bike at 10:36 AM riding the “Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood” route. The wind fought me all the way to Caney Creek when I made the big u-turn under US59 to head back to Kingwood. I biked 31.2 miles clawing back a little of the miles I need to reach my goal. Today marked the 10th time on this route in 2020; 7 times on my Canyon Endurace and 3 times on the Lynskey R300. I saw another cyclist early in the ride but he surprised before I could start the GoPro camera.

No bills in the grass today but plenty of weather news. Hurricane Laura appears to be heading to SE Texas and SW Louisiana but not for sure exactly where or how strong for now. Weather for today’s ride had hints of the change with the north 7 mph wind and high clouds. Weather for the ride: start 87 (61% humidity, 71.8 dew point), partly cloudy, wind NE 7 mph. Finish 94 (46% humidity, 70.3 dew point), partly cloudy, wind N 12 mph. While it didn’t feel that hot (to me anyway) when I finished at 1:17 PM salt stains adorned my kit as you can see in the video.

My August mileage goal looks out of reach between my hospital stay and the upcoming weather but I made some progress with today’s bike ride.

Approaching Hurricane? Painful Obstruction, Bills In The Grass

Texbiker.net Posted on August 24, 2020 by Rick AnkrumAugust 24, 2020

I didn’t plan a week off the bike but it happened. Last Tuesday I started feeling bad and by Wednesday noon I decided to go to the emergency room. After sitting in a 50 degree emergency lobby for several hours they admitted e for a small bowel obstruction. Not the first time this happened to me with last time in May 2014 while my wife and I drove home from a cruise in Miami. We made it to Wesley Chapel, a suburb of Tampa. We found the Florida Hospital thanks to a Walgreens store. The reason I mention the last time, the surgeon at Memorial Hermann Northeast looking me worked at Florida Hospital when I was there in 2014. He also is a cyclist focusing on triathlons. Last Saturday they released me and today I took my first ride, a slow, easy one on the “Atascocita – Walden – E. Lake Houston Parkway” route for a total of 27.7 miles. It felt good turning the pedals.

Starting at 10:35 AM the weather warmed up to 85 with a 7 mph breeze from the north. At the 12:57 PM finish it hit 90 and the wind came from the east at 9 mph. Lurking in the Gulf of Mexico two storms, Marco and Laura, might affect my biking over the next several days. For now Marco doesn’t have the punch Laura could be building up to. As I write this Laura could make landfall late Wednesday around the Texas – Louisiana line.

A strange incident during today’s bike ride after I made the turnaround at E. Lake Houston Parkway heading west I passed an older pickup truck parked on the shoulder with the driver’s door open and sticking out into the road. In front of it in the grass a man a boy roamed about looking for something in the grass. I waved as I rode by but not too long after that I spotted a 20 dollar bill laying on the shoulder. I rode by and then saw another one in the grass. I stopped picked it up and turnaround riding back to the first dollar bill. I picked it up and the boy walked towards me. I saw he had money in his left hand and asked if he was looking for the money I had. He answered, yes, and I handed the two $20 bills to him. Maybe I should’ve asked how they got spread along the road but I didn’t.

With the days off the bike reaching my 800 mile goal looks doomed. Here’s how I stand after today’s ride.
