About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Wichita Falls Rolling Through Lucy Park Tall Prairie Grass

Durango Texas | durangotexas.blogspot.com

I rolled my motorized means of locomotion to Lucy Park this morning to have myself a mighty fine time rolling my non-mechanized wheels for a long commune with somewhat shady nature.

I don’t know if that tall green grass you see on either side of my bike’s handlebars is prairie tall grass of the sort which covered the Plains part of the United States back when the buffalo roamed and the deer and the antelope played.

What I do know is the grass was taller than me. And my latest …

Formulating A Bike Route In The Heat

Texbiker.net Posted on August 14, 2020 by Rick AnkrumAugust 14, 2020

I began formulating today’s bike route while eating breakfast and watching the Criterium du Dauphine race in France (I wasn’t in France). I remembered a route I did recently but had left out a portion so today I decided to ride the whole route, “Oakhurst – Cumberland – Valley Ranch”. After the race ended I got ready to ride and started at 10:28 AM. The last time I rode this route was October 20th, 2019. The streets and roads are part of other routes but most of today was in the opposite direction. Today’s bike ride covered 32.57 miles, 3/10 of a mile longer than the October 20th ride. This pushed the week’s total to 190.06 miles, setting up another 200+ mile week if I ride tomorrow (Saturday) which I plan on doing.

The forecast calls for another hot day getting up to 99 degrees and a heat index approaching 110. I finished at 12:58 PM before the brunt of the heat arrived but it was still hot. In the last 2 days I had a question from two people about the empty water bottle cage on my bikes and what did I do for water while riding in the heat. My CamelBak does a better job keeping water cold and lasting the whole ride without stopping at a store for refills (COVID-19 caution). Today after the ride I emptied the CamelBak and ice came out; that would not happen using a bottle and I use the CamelBak Podium Chill bottles with insulation. Weather at the start and finish: start 90 (67% humidity, 77.8 dew point), a few clouds, wind SW 9 mph. Finish 95 (56% humidity, 77.3 dew point), a few clouds, wind SW 9 mph.

I am over halfway to my mileage goal for August. Below is a recap of where I stand. I added a column showing if I am ahead or behind.

8-14-2020 MTD Mileage Goal Spreadsheet

My legs had more energy today even though the wind was a little stronger. Strava said my ride was consistent with my usual efforts. Link to my Strava ride activity page.

BCGB Reservations – How it Works

By AustinBike | austinmountainbiking.com

I made a reservation to ride the Greenbelt today and took a ride down there to check out the process and talk to the folk that have to enforce this.

Here is the detail: ]http://www.austinbike.com/index.php/blog/376-barton-creek-reservations-from-covid-19](http://www.austinbike.com/index.php/blog/376-barton-creek-reservations-from-covid-19)

If you have other questions I am happy to answer them or try to find out from the city, I have time on my hands and can try to be the point person.

But if you just want to bitch about it or throw out crazy conspiracy theories, please use the other thread. I have little patience for that noise these days. Let’s keep this thread to the actual mechanics of how this thing works and what it means to biking.

In The Heat My Legs Said Slow

Texbiker.net Posted on August 13, 2020 by Rick AnkrumAugust 13, 2020

Just another hot day in southeast Texas and a gentle bike ride to enjoy it. I set out at 10:25 AM riding my Lynskey R300 bike on what I call the “Kingwood to Ramsey Road – Huffman” route but today no Huffman. Tuesday when I rode east through Huffman I saw the southbound FM 2100 shoulder full of trucks relocating wires and poles combined with the northbound shoulder barriers I opted today to skip FM 2100.

Though I skipped the Huffman portion of the route I rode 36.86 miles which was below the 37.38 mile average of all 8 rides for 2020 including today. My total for the week comes in at 157.49 miles putting closer to 200+ miles for the week. 3 of the 8 rides were on my Lynskey R300 and 5 on my Canyon Endurace bike. I took this picture when I stopped for a break on Ramsey Road.

8-13-2020 Bike Ride Ramsey Road Bridge-1

Biking puts the rider out in the weather. Today another heat advisory was in effect starting at 10:30 AM through Friday at 7 PM. When I stopped for a break on Ramsey Road at a bridge sitting in the shade a gentle breeze cooled me down which I enjoyed before heading back to Kingwood. Compare that to the hail storm some racers faced near the end of the 2nd stage of the Criterium du Dauphine which I watched before today’s ride. No hail here, it would have melted instantly. Weather I faced: start 89 (71% humidity, 78.5 dew point), a few clouds, wind S 5 mph. Finish 96 (53% humidity, 76.3 dew point), a few clouds, wind W 5 mph.

Today wasn’t a fast bike ride but I rode how my legs dictated. The wind wasn’t a problem most of the ride. Maybe I needed a slow day.

I retired in July 2011 and used to know MS Excel so after today’s bike ride I created a spreadsheet to show my progress on my month’s mileage goal. Apparently no using MS Excel all of those years dulled my memory on how to create the spreadsheet. I finally figured it.

I will need to work on creating a chart, that part of my previous skill is vacant for now. I improved my daily average with today’s ride and overall am 73 miles ahead.
