About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Cyclists complete the 2020 Hotter’N Hell Hundred, virtually

Lauren Roberts | www.timesrecordnews.com

Two months ago, the Hotter’N Hell Hundred had to make the decision to cancel this year’s onsite event due to COVID-19.

The annual event would have brought thousands to Wichita Falls Aug. 27 – 30.

With the onsite event canceled the rides, races and runs were moved to the virtual space.

Chip Filer, executive director Hotter’N Hell Hundred, said that while about a dozen have completed the …

Rockwall resident’s neighborhood prayer box offers much-needed hope during COVID-19 pandemic

By Austin | blueribbonnews.com

(ROCKWALL, TX — July 13, 2020) Back in April when the COVID-19 pandemic started forcing many to quarantine in their homes, Rockwall resident Rhonda Moore was called by her faith to create a flyer box offering those in her neighborhood the gift of prayer during the hardship and uncertainty surrounding the virus. The box encourages folks in the area to take a flyer with a designated space to jot down their thoughts and prayer requests (anonymously if they don’t wish to include their names), and drop them in the blue tube next to the flyer box. …

… We hear you’re an avid cyclist – can you tell us more about that?

I love riding my road bike. I’ve been cycling since 2011. I usually do 30- to 40-mile solo rides here in Rockwall and out to Royse City or Caddo Mills. And I still ride with a group I’ve been riding with for years, Bike Friendly Mid Cities, out of North Richland Hills. I’ve worked for Texas Health Resources in Clinical IT since 2009. Our hospital in Flower Mound has a cycling team. I still meet up with those guys for cycling rallies around North Texas a few times a year. …

Another Day, Another Heat Advisory. Its Texas Summer

Texbiker.net Posted on July 13, 2020 by Rick AnkrumJuly 13, 2020

Another day, another heat advisory for the Houston area. With that in mind I started today’s bike ride at 9:38 AM and finished at 12:34 PM before the hottest part of the day. Riding the Lynskey R300 bike I chose the “Kingwood – SH 242 – Kingwood” route and rode 37.11 miles. This was the 7th time biking this route in 2020 and the first time on the Lynskey R300 (it now has 1,641 miles on it). The other 6 times were on the Canyon Endurace bike. I passed the halfway point of my 800 mile goal for July at 418.08 miles. A summary of the 7 rides.

7-13-2020 YTD Bike Rides Summary Today's Route

The CamelBak was full of ice and water for the ride. The weather was warm at the start and downright hot at the end: start 89 (74% humidity, 79.7 dew point), partly cloudy, wind SW 8 mph. Finish 97 (57% humidity, 79 dew point), a few clouds, wind calm. Wind didn’t help much to keep cool as I rode but whenever I rode through shade I felt the difference.

Taking a rest day yesterday helped my legs for today’s ride. While I did get my average speed to 14 mph they did power me when I wanted to go faster or up an incline.

GoPro Camera Mount, Upright and Out Front

Texbiker.net Posted on July 12, 2020 by Rick AnkrumJuly 12, 2020

Today (Sunday) I took as a rest day from the heat and to allow my legs some recovery time after biking 11 days in a row. While not outside I did not let time go to waste.

On my Canyon Endurace the GoPro mount has been in several places. The handlebars are an aero shape which is not conducive to the GoPro handlebar mount. In the past I used a helmet mount but the extra weight of the GoPro was not good especially if I added the mic adapter. Next I tried an adhesive mount on the top of the stem which worked for few rides until the vibration cracked the plastic mount. Another location was below my Wahoo Bolt computer. This location required the GoPro to be upside down (not a problem when I learned how to lock the camera in that position) and entailed a long mic cable plus hearing the camera beeps was hard in the noise.

Previously I tried to use a dual GoPro mount by moving the mounts around but the Bolt computer was too close. Then yesterday I tried using the dual mount again but in a different position. This moves the GoPro to an upright position like I use on the Lynskey R300, puts the camera in front of the Bolt computer, moves it closer to me for the mic cable, and I should hear the beeps better. Also I can see the LCD screen on the back of the camera. The mount can also turn a few degrees to the right or left. I think this position will be far enough out front to remove the brake levers from view. Note the three GoPro screws to hold everything in place.

The new GoPro setup. Click on the image to enlarge it.
