As many small businesses struggle to stay afloat during the coronavirus pandemic, bike shops are doing well, if not booming.
With limited options for exercise that meets social distancing, many Americans are digging in their garages, dusting off their bikes, and hitting the road.
New bikes also fly off the racks.

Easter arrived quickly mainly because I have been busy this week. By the time church ended today (I am on the live streaming team) the early morning rain and clouds blew away leaving 89 degrees and sunshine. Starting the ride at 1:22 PM I went over a route in my head staying in Kingwood mostly on the streets. I remembered last Sunday’s ride and added a northern extension into Royal Brook and Country Colony.
Before the ride as I looked at the weather the wind jumped out: W 12 mph gusts 22 mph. I figured hard pedaling whenever the route headed west. The first 9.5 miles was into the headwind and what a relief when I reached that point. From there my direction changed mostly to the east and south easing the effort. That’s when I improved my average speed to 13+ mph. Sometimes on bike rides the wind tappers off but not today. By the 3:11 PM finish it was W 15 mph gusts 25 mph.
The bike ride highlights in 5 minutes.
As you see in the video other people biked, walked and enjoyed the sun. Even some vultures got into the video. The first biker in the video fell just before I turned the GoPro on from the wet concrete as he made a turn. I didn’t record the next person at Deerbrook and Northpark Drives. A jogger, he gave me a wide berth after crossing Northpark and seeing me stopped in the shade waiting for the light to change. I rode after the light changed and passed around me commenting on the Canyon Endurace bike.
89 degrees starts to get where I prefer to ride and by the end it increase to 90. I wore shorts and a short sleeve jersey with sunscreen. Sunscreen use increased this week.
Speaking of the week, with today’s 22.75 miles the week’s total came in at 229.77 miles, the highest week so far in 2020. Up to now the highest week was 227.75 miles, 2 weeks ago. A summary of the week’s activity.
April totals 374.81 miles. My goals: 600 road miles and 30 Zwift miles. The road miles goal continues but my Zwift subscription ended today so that goal will not be met since I only rode 18.7 miles so far.

The coronavirus pandemic has required a change to the format of the 17th annual Ride of Silence, which is set for May 7.
The International Ride of Silence Board of Directors has decided that instead of group rides, participants do solo rides or rides with their family, according to an announcement shared by the Permian Basin group.
The purpose of the Ride of Silence is to honor bicyclists who have been injured or killed and raise awareness of bicycling.
Great morning ride that turned into a much longer ride than anticipated. Since I was solo I kept taking new roads to see where they went. Some good… some not so much! 😂
End up in Dayton and got a solo Rona century in. 🤙ðŸ¼ðŸ’ªðŸ¼ðŸ™ðŸ¼
Easter weekend with the family and birthdays 🎂 for Emily, Jax, & Kelly! We are going to miss all our family back home.
And I miss all my friends! Stay safe out there y’all!
Three months ago today, I wrote a blog titled What’s It Like to Bike 90 Days in a Row for a Total of 1,985 Miles? Adding 2020’s mileage thus far, 1,677, I come up with a sum of 3,662 miles. That, my friends, is just over 20 miles a day. So how fitting that quite by accident I finished a ride today for just that amount? I didn’t set out to bike every day, but once I get an idea in my head, it’s like the proverbial bee in a bonnet. It flits about looking for a way to express itself. It either …

Good news, cyclists! The Shiner GASP will ride again on Sat. Oct 3. There’s still time to sign up at https://t.co/J9qO5xzny4
Today on my ride I had a flat (common occurrence for you non-cyclists) and two different people in trucks stopped and asked if I needed help. Faith in humanity restored, at least temporarily.
Have a child at home who doesn't know how to ride a bicycle? Now's a great time to learn! Tip: Focus on learning to balance first–pedaling comes naturally once balance is achieved. https://t.co/HP6rXj9tJX

Good morning to everyone except my fellow cyclists who unlike me refuse to ride solo and continue to ride in groups. Y’all suck, and you’re stupid, and you’ll ruin this for everyone.
Sunshine came in my windows as I prepared to leave on today’s bike ride. Selecting my usual Saturday route, “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden” the Canyon Endurace rolled out the driveway at 10:57 AM. But clouds slowly moved in hiding the sun and making it feel cooler. I hoped once I got warmed up the wind chill would be less noticeable.
The goal was to ride at least 27 miles to hit 200+ miles for the week and I surpassed that biking 33.11 miles putting the week ‘s total at 207.02 miles and the month at 352.06 miles. With 19 more potential riding days my 630 mile goal for April looks doable. Sunday is my last day to Zwift and reach my 30 mile goal for April but I don’t know if that will happen. Sunday’s afternoon weather forecast looks favorable for outdoor riding in place of Zwift. If so, I will fall short of the Zwift goal.
While it was 77 degrees at the start with the increasing cloud cover at the 1:28 PM finish it dropped to 75. during that time the wind increase from 7 mph to 15 mph from the SE. This added to the chilling effect making me glad I chose to wear a long sleeve jersey, short sleeve jersey, and shorts. If it was overcast at the start I might have opted for a jacket instead of the long sleeve jersey. More detailed bike ride weather: start 77 (67% humidity, 65.0 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 7 mph. Finish 75 (80% humidity, 68.4 dew point), overcast, wind SE 15 mph.
Highlights from today’s bike ride. 33.11 miles compressed into 8 minutes.
Numerous people passed me along the route either biking or walking. I saw a few joggers too. I managed to get all the bikers in the video except for 2. While waiting for the light to change at Atascocita Shores Dr. and FM 1960 I saw them at the Chevron station across the road but they were too far to capture on the GoPro plus traffic kept moving between us. The only reason I spotted them was their bright orange jerseys.
The GoPro external microphone picks up my voice nicely even in noisy situations like passing traffic. Wind noise reduction when I moved the mic behind my helmet strap helped. Battery life does not appear to be greatly reduced with the mic as long as I use the QuikCapture feature of the GoPro. This feature allows me to record video without the camera being on all the time. When I push the record button there is a 3 second delay before the camera records. To stop I push the record button again. Each time I push the record button a different set of beeps alerts me about what took place.
