About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

(Long) Road to NAHBS 2020 – Teaser interview w/ Mike Smith of No. 22 Bicycles

By Greg Kopecky | bikerumor.com

Our readers love the North American Handmade Bicycle Show, and so do we. That’s why we were all saddened to learn of its postponement due to the COVID-19 virus.

What to do? The show has been rescheduled to August, but we still have plenty of great NAHBS content to share with you. We’re going to have our usual series of pre-NAHBS interviews to put the spotlight on a handful of our favorite builders – and will start sharing these stories NOW, when the original show was scheduled to begin. Economic times will be tough for us all, but perhaps even more so for small independent businesses. Thus, we feel it is our duty to help promote these builders, and keep the excitement going all the way to the forthcoming August NAHBS.

Please enjoy this interview with Mike Smith of No. 22 Bicycle Company. …

Obstruction Between Pundt and Dennis Johnston Parks

James C. | www.strava.com

Spring Creek Greenway Heads up to those riding the greenway. At the power lines (north of Pundt Park and close to Dennis Johnston), there are cross ties that completely block the trail. Not sure how long they will be there, but stay alert. You’ll more than likely need to unclip and walk your bike over it. Not a real problem unless you fail to see them.

‘Stay-home’ order issued for Liberty County

www.thevindicator.com

With plenty of exceptions, Liberty County residents are ordered to remain at their homes beginning at midnight tonight, Tuesday, March 24, and continuing until April 3.

Liberty County Judge Jay Knight appeared on Facebook at 5 p.m. today with County Attorney Matthew Poston to announce a new executive order. If we understand correctly, the stay-at-home order does not mean residents literally cannot leave their homes. What it means is that we are not to go anywhere that …

… Residents can go outside, Poston said. They can even go to a park. They can go jogging or bicycling. But they are not to come within 6 feet of anyone else while doing so. …

Heat, Wildflowers, Goal Passed on the Bike Ride to SH 242

Texbiker.net Posted on March 25, 2020 by Rick AnkrumMarch 25, 2020

Now it is starting to get warm the way I like it. At the finish of today’s bike ride it was 88 degrees. I wonder how the COVID-19 virus reacts to heat. I know how I do, I love it! Harris County and the City of Houston enacted stay home restrictions last midnight while Montgomery County did not. For that reason I chose the “Kingwood – SH 242 – Kingwood” route. After the first 3 miles the route moved into Montgomery County staying there until the last 4 miles where it returns to Harris County and Houston.

One exception to the stay at home requirement allows for outdoor exercise as long as you maintain a safe distance. Maintaining a safe distance while biking solo is not a problem. In the video I show the other cyclists I passed during the ride. I missed two other cyclists when I rode through Kings Manor on the return to Kingwood.

I tried to capture the wildflowers in the video but maybe riding slower would have put them in a better view.

North of Community Drive as I rode on the frontage rode I passed the miles needed to reach my 660 mile goal for March and with the remaining miles from there increased March to 684.04 miles. The breakdown so far: 608.03 road miles and 75.7 Zwift miles. With several days remaining in March I hope to add to that.

Unlike yesterday the wind was light today at 6 mph from the south. Weather during the bike ride: start 84 (71% humidity, 73.3 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind variable 4 mph. Finish 88 (57% humidity, 70.8 dew point), a few clouds, wind S 6 mph. Short sleeve Texbiker.net jersey and shorts today. Thursday weather looks like a repeat.

Completed Rail Trail offers 19 miles of recreation, sightseeing opportunities

By Rebekah Schulte | dentonrc.com

The A-train Rail Trail, connecting five A-train stations from the Downtown Denton Transit Center to the Hebron station in Lewisville, recently finished the final construction phase, making the trail available to all who are interested.

Currently, the Denton County Transportation Authority is hoping the city of Lewisville will start construction this summer and complete a section of the trail on the new Valley Ridge extension between College and Mill Street, said Adrienne Hamilton, the senior manager of marketing and communications for DCTA.

In addition, the preliminary planning to extend the trail south from the …

Trail Foundation: Stay off Butler Hike and Bike Trail during coronavirus shelter-in-place

By Mark D. Wilson | www.statesman.com

Despite not being officially closed as part of new local shelter-in-place orders, The Trail Foundation is urging the community to stay off of the Butler Hike and Bike Trail.

The foundation, which works to protect and enhance the trail around Lady Bird Lake, said there are areas of the trail where people simply cannot be 6 feet apart, in accordance with city directives to limit the spread of the coronavirus. The foundation does not have the authority to close the trail.

New Jersey No Match For 22 MPH Wind

Texbiker.net Posted on March 24, 2020 by Rick AnkrumMarch 24, 2020

I thought today would be a great day to ride in a new jersey. The weather was warm and the Lynskey R300 Titanium bike was willing. Wheels rolled at 11:05 AM as I set off to bike the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route. I altered the early part of the route to add some distance and the ride ended up at 32.98 miles. March now totals 648.57 miles, 11.5 miles from my 660 mile goal. I think the goal is in sight.

The new Primal Pink Floyd – Dark Side of the Moon jersey. Prior to the ride I wrote the date on the inside of the jersey so I can keep up with when I first wore the jersey.

I bought the jersey a while back and held off wearing it until the weather improved. Weather during the bike ride: start 81 (77% humidity, 73.2 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 12 mph gusts 22 mph. Finish 88 (59% humidity, 71.8 dew point), partly cloudy, wind SW 10 mph gusts 20 mph.

Notice the wind gusts above 20 mph. The only times the wind wasn’t holding me back were few. The most punishing came biking west over Lake Houston. It took a long time to cover the 2 miles when the best I could pedal was 9 to 10 mph. With nothing blocking the wind it shoved me to the guard rail, made my legs feel like lead, and showed no mercy when traffic buzzed by which normally provides a brief relief. On the west side of the lake turning onto Atascocita Shores Drive switched the direction some but the houses didn’t block it either.

When I rode into Walden I saw a church member out power washing his driveway so I stopped to chat. We kept our “social distance” for a nice visit catching up since worship services moved to online only.

After fighting the wind to get back on the west side of the lake I made my way to W. Lake Houston Parkway. Numerous people walked and biked on the trail over the river as I headed north. With the schools closed and people working from home I see more people outside. It doesn’t hurt that the warm weather arrived. I finished the bike ride at 1:59 PM.

It could be warmer on Wednesday and no rain. I should be able to ride those last miles to reach my goal.
