About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Bike Ride In Texas RGV

Texbiker.net Posted on February 27, 2020 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 27, 2020

I went south to find some warmer weather and while I was gone the temperature at my home dropped to 28 degrees. Fortunately in Harlingen it didn’t get quite that cold. When I started today’s bike ride at 12:47 PM I had waited for it warm up and it did to 62 degrees. The 7 mph wind from the north added to the chill and I was glad I brought some warm biking clothes: shorts, leg warmers, thermal long sleeve jersey, regular long sleeve jersey, wind breaker jacket, and full finger gloves. The humidity during the bike ride was 24% dropping to 20% at the finish, levels I am not used to. That probably added to the chill.

The route I put together with the help of Google Maps went north from where I am staying along US77. The frontage road had spots of chip and seal making for some rough biking but smooth sections broke them up. Traffic wasn’t bad but my choice of turning west at Wilson Road wasn’t the best one. If I had positioned myself in the left turn lane it might have been okay but I didn’t realize the street was ahead putting me in the right most lane. Lots of traffic stopped at the traffic light coming from the east as I rode east to make a u-turn and ride west. I waited fora break and crossed from the east bound side to a truck lot on the north side of Wilson Road. It was my gravel portion of the bike ride. After a few minutes I found a break and got in the west bound lane. Once I made it under US77 and passed the frontage road a shoulder appeared and I took it all the way to my right turn onto Stuart Place Road.

Stuart Place Road did not have a shoulder but I don’t think one car passed me all the way to Primera Road. Up to this point a headwind worked against me but biking east on Primera the wind let up. Under US77 Primera became Loop 499 with a bike lane until I got to US77 Business Route not far from the end of the bike ride.

Friday I will look for another route and the forecast calls for warmer weather. Saturday I will ride in the Jalapeno 100 Bike Ride.

Lakeway, Bee Cave residents eye RM 620 improvements

By Leslee Bassman | www.statesman.com

The evening’s cold and rain didn’t deter more than 250 local residents who packed the Lake Travis High School cafeteria last week seeking an update on improvements to RM 620, the area’s main thoroughfare.

A Thursday open house and presentation by the Texas Department of Transportation and its consultants provided information on the RM 620 widening project, including its draft environmental assessment results. The event also offered an opportunity for public input. …

How Colin Strickland is blazing a new path through American pro cycling

Fred Dreier | www.velonews.com

Dirty Kanza winner Colin Strickland is not your average pro cyclist, as we found when we visited him in Austin in late 2019. Strickland’s constant tinkering is pushing American pro cycling in a bold new direction.

This story appeared in the March/April 2020 print issue of VeloNews.

A Texas-sized dust cloud fills our nostrils as we edge our rental car closer to Colin Strickland, who pedals a stiff gear along this gravel road south of Austin. Strickland crouches low in the same aerodynamic attack position that became the lasting image of his Dirty Kanza victory. The speedometer edges upward: 20, 23, 25 miles per hour.

Strickland has brought us to this rural corner of Texas to show us why it sits at the center of his past, present, and future. When Strickland worked full-time as an environmental scientist several years ago, he performed a biological analysis of the local hillsides before they were plowed up for a five-lane freeway. These days, …
