About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

The Bike Ride of Problems to Walden

Texbiker.net Posted on January 24, 2020 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 24, 2020

Waiting for the temperature to get a little more above 60 degrees I started the bike ride at 12:48 PM. My planned route took me to E Lake Houston Parkway south and east but around 4/10 of mile into the ride a problem happened: the right side of the dual GoPro mount broke where I used Gorilla Glue to repair it. The Gorilla lost his grip on this one. The jarring from the bike was too much. Now holding the PowerPod in my left hand I turned around and went back home. Arriving there I retrieved the aluminum dual GoPro mount I bought in case the Gorilla Glue failed. I thought this would fix it quickly and get back to the ride. NOPE!! Maybe my anxiousness to ride outside after 6 days of Zwifting got the ride of problems going. The broken bracket.

1-24-2020 Broken Dual GoPro Mount

Taking the new mount out of the package I saw the GoPro fingers attached with a screw. Removing the screw and moving the mount to the top of the aluminum cross bar I thought maybe this would allow the GoPro camera to mount above the crossbar but when I tried that the Elemnt computer blocked the camera. Turning the bracket back to below the crossbar I tried to insert the GoPro frame into the fingers and it wouldn’t fit. I had another frame from my GoPro Hero7 White camera which did slide in after some hard pushing. Now I got ready to ride putting the PowerPod in its slot on the right and the camera on the left.

1-24-2020 Aluminum Dual GoPro Mount

With all of time lost fixing the mounts I decided to ride the “Atascocita – Walden” route. Heading south along W. Lake Houston Parkway when I looked at the greenbelt trail over Ben’s Branch it looked like the contractor removed the barrier at the north side of the bridge but when I got to the south side the barrier was still there requiring me to dismount, walk through some almost mud, lean under the rope before getting back on the Canyon bike. Not long after that I noticed the cadence sensor not showing numbers as I turned the pedals. If I hit a bump it would produce cadence numbers for awhile and then go back to zero. I stopped and pushed on the case thinking the battery might be lose but that didn’t help much. This continued until I noticed the PowerPod was tilted downward causing it to not report power. Until then I thought the cadence sensor was causing the PowerPod to shows 0’s. Once I adjusted the tilt power showed up again and cadence seemed to be more consistent. I will check the sensor’s battery.

Because of these problems the ride data does not represent what really happened.

On the good news side of the ride I wore a new Pearl Izumi Elite Escape Convertible black jacket that kept me comfortable along with the long sleeve thermal jersey, leg warmers, and shorts. Weather during the bike ride: start 64 (41% humidity, 40.0 dew point), a few clouds, wind N 6 mph. Finish 66 (35% humidity, 37.9 dew point), a few clouds, wind NW 8 mph.

Why You Should Attend the 2020 North American Handmade Bicycle Show

By Madelyn Tomasi | www.roadbikerider.com

The North American Handmade Bicycle Show is the world’s largest and most innovative show for handmade bicycles and was built on the foundation of bringing consumers, creators, and media together on an annual basis.

Arundel Bike described it this way: “It’s the bicycle equivalent of going to an art exhibition and having the chance to chat it up with Rembrandt, Van Gogh, and Picasso about their work; and when you went for a lunch hot dog, Monet asked you to pass the mustard.”

NAHBS has kept itself fresh by traveling to a different city each year, recently making appearances in …

One of the pleasures of being a car-free bicyclist in a bustling city like Austin is that there is never a shortage of cool things to photograph. When you’re stuck in a car, you usually can’t just pull over and take pictures as easily as on a bike. But see something interesting while cycling, pull over safely, and bam! You’re rewarded with plenty of images to share as you like. This is one of those posts where the words can’t

Who Says No Flat Tires Zwifting?

Texbiker.net Posted on January 23, 2020 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 23, 2020

Originally I selected the Tour de Zwift Stage 3 Group Ride starting at 12:01 PM CST. I set everything up and got on the Blue Norcross AL bike to warm up but the rear tire squealed as I turned the pedals. Normally the tire groaned a little as I started turning the pedals so I stopped and pedaling and waited for the wheel to come to a stop. Squeezing the rear tire told me no air and a flat. I canceled the ride in Zwift before taking the rear tire off the bike for further inspection.

Moving to the breakfast room I removed the tube, pumped it up and searched for a leak. I found it at a previous patch with air coming out somehow. I tried to remove the old patch to replace it but the glue held firm and I ended up tearing the tube making the hole bigger. I went to the garage to get a replacement tube from my stockpile. The Kenda 700×28/32C tube fit the bill but the shorter valve stem concerned me. I put the stem in the wheel to check the fit and it stuck out just enough to use. Inserting the rest of the tube and mounting the tire got the wheel back in order. I pumped the tire up to 87 psi, inserted back into the bike, adjusted the tension on the Wahoo Kickr Snap. Checking Zwift I found another time for the same ride began at 1:01 PM CST and got ready again.

Live streamed at Twitch.TV/Texbiker

I don’t know why they don’t call this a race. The pace is fast with no fence to keep racers together. 326 Group B riders (a total of 737 in all 3 groups) gathered for the start of the 13.9 mile ride. Each group starts a minute apart. The pace picked up not long after the starting bell and strung out in a long line. I found a group I could stay with biking around 2.5 w/kg with bursts up to 4 w/kg to stay with my group. We rode around Watopia through Sand and Sequoias labeled Trip Into The Wilderness. One tall climb peaked at 9.5 miles with a 6% grade but rolling hills preceded and followed. Total elevation came to 594 feet. At the finish I came in 123rd. My new personal record on Fuego Flats of 47.15 seconds beat yesterday’s. It won’t be long until Stage 4 will come long.

Maybe Friday’s weather will be dry and warm enough to bike on the roads.

Bike lane construction delayed a few months as San Marcos pursues more non-car options

by: Chris Davis | www.kxan.com

SAN MARCOS, Texas (KXAN) — A project in the heart of the city will make it easier for cyclists to get around San Marcos safely, but KXAN has learned the final piece of construction won’t start for several months.

Originally, the city planned to begin building physical barriers and bike signals this month to finish the two-way bike lane on Guadalupe Street between University Drive and Grove Street. The new timeline pushes the start of construction to April or May.

Some of the work is already done; the city set out construction cones at the end of last …
