With the Houston Texans playing at noon today I looked for a ride that began Saturday morning and found the “Zwift 3R Ride on for WBR Social Ride”. I knew what WBR stood for (World Bicycle Relief) and wanted to ride to support them. The leader rode 220km today before our ride as he raised money for WBR. During the ride the leader gave facts about WBR, some I knew and other I did not.
The ride began at 10:00 AM and lasted 60 minutes. In that time I biked 19.71 miles at an average speed of 19.6 mph. The ride leader wanted everyone to ride at 2.0 w/kg but that never happened and the 74 riders spread out over the course with me towards the back.
Fortunately the ride was mostly flat with one short climb of 6% or so. It didn’t take too long after the start for me to heat up enough and be glad I wasn’t outside in the 52 degree overcast weather. Sunday might warm enough to bike outdoors after church.
I set 3 personal records in Strava from among a long list of segments bikers created. Zwift reported a new person record for Fuego Flats of 56:16.
At 2:25 am on Monday, December 16, 2019, Merry Daye, a black woman aged 45 and a male were riding their bikes south on Cameron Road. Her bike had a trailer, and she was working on it while in the bike lane. The man was on the sidewalk. A silver Dodge Ram truck (the irony of the name is not lost on me) veered into the bike lane, crashing into Merry, bike and trailer. The truck then did a hit and run and left the scene. Emergency medical services was called and came to the crash site. They found Merry without a pulse, but were able to restore her heartbeat. She was transported to the hospital where she died. For her, family and friends, it will be Christmas without Merry. Sources: CBS Austin, KXAN, Austin Police Department …

Something happened to biking in the Zwift Riders Germany Social Ride. I signed up for the ride, the screen showed me in the group as the countdown to the 12:00 PM start but once the ride began nobody rode around me. Instead I ended up biking the NYC Central Park Loop alone. The right side box showing those around me was empty most of the time with an occasional rider appearing. I saw messages from other bikers in the social ride in German sometimes. Not sure what happened. My jersey says “Zwift Riders Germany” too.
Outside the weather was below my 60 degree threshold with an overcast sky and 52 to 53 degrees. Indoors the ceiling fan and floor fan helped to keep me cool but I sweated anyway. Saturday weather will keep me indoors again to Zwift. I hope to be in the ride I sign up for then.
With no other bikers around and the social ride gone I decided to ride for an hour. I rode 16.88 miles in 1:00:26. Miles biked this week: 93.48. December stands at 342.13 miles and YTD 8,012 miles (7,498 road miles + 514 virtual )miles.
Strava recorded 3 personal records again as I moved through Central Park looking for the social ride people. The course had some hills with one 10% climb appearing three times. I geared down and pedaled slowly up the hill wanting the descent to come soon. I rode around Central Park on a bike several years ago and don’t remember a hill that steep.
