WOOOHOOO!!! Rode my first century.
by Sharpshin        www.bikeforums.net
Well, 102.7 miles to be exact. Elapsed time start to finish twelve hours fifteen minutes; neither swift nor stylish but then I would imagine most folks ain’t packing fifty pounds on the bike when they try this neither.

Late start, 9:50 am on Saturday, meant I’d be finishing after dark IF I made it, but I’ve been riding a lot at night lately. Here’s the bike at the start, note the addition of Bontrager fenders, put on the night before.
Four miles in, heading east towards downtown San Antonio….

Dozens of state parks feature trailways ranging from a couple miles to a couple hundred miles and include trail sections for every level of rider, from beginner to advanced. …

Rudolph’s Revenge and a fire at North Shore!
The team’s 2014 season has been officially underway since December 2013, but through a few different race cancellations and postponements, we still hadn’t had a complete race with our participation until last Saturday, January 25th.
The Rudolph’s Revenge race was a 30 (or 40) mile race on the toughest singletrack in North Texas combined with super fast fire road. The 30 mile race took at least 2 hours to finish and covered roughly 1500 feet in elevation change. It had been postponed because of weather in December, but it officially was put into the books on Saturday.  Two of our new…

An Old Guy On Two Wheels
Work party
We try to schedule a work party once a month.  There are tasks and projects that can’t be done during normal shop hours. In this case we needed to build more bike storage.  Several members are accomplished welders.  We have people who are engineers in real life.  Design, ordering, fabrication all in house.
My contribution was heavy lifting and various chores to keep the work flow going.
Ditch the gym
Here’s a work out for you.  Move 50 or 60 bikes from upstairs storage to make room to assemble the bike…

Bike Sharing Crashes in Canada
By Nick Summers        www.businessweek.com

When New York City rolled out its bike-sharing system in May 2013, one reason that criticism never gained much traction was that the program was said to cost taxpayers nothing. As many as 10,000 bicycles and 600 stations—“All of this without using any taxpayer money!” crowed Vikram Pandit, then the chief executive of Citigroup, which paid $41 million to have the system’s bikes and docking stations painted in its trademark blue. Opponents could carp that bike sharing was crunchy, socialist, and/or vaguely French, but they couldn’t claim it was a bad use of city funds.
Now some news out of Canada bodes poorly for urban transportation utopians. Public Bike Sharing Co., known as Bixi, the company that designed the sturdy bikes and nifty solar-powered docking stations used in New York and more than a dozen other cities around the world, was forced into bankruptcy protection in Montreal, where it also administers the local sharing program. The nonprofit has debt of…

Double Shift
An Old Guy On Two Wheels
In the morning I was Tim
Did my usual Monday morning shop.  I arrived way early because I planned for morning commute traffic that wasn’t there.  I had forgotten about the positive impact of a federal holiday on city traffic patterns.
Used the time to do some housecleaning tasks.  There is always a certain amount of entropy and chaos in a community bike shop.  It is a constant chore to restore some sense of order.
It was a relatively busy shop.  Several earn-a-bike users working on their checklists.  We made significant progress on some of our donation bikes.  And one finished his first checklist.  He said he would be back at the evening shop to begin working on his bike.  Told him I would be there to help.  Always exciting.  This program allows people to…
