About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

In about a mile, you’ll turn right only CR 2009. At the top of the hill is another gate to Fossil Rim, turn right there and we’ll start in that parking lot (at the Overlook). Interesting facts about Fossil Rim: ? About 1750 acres and have been in the conservation business for 25 years ? Has an international reputation for breeding rhinos (10 calves in about as many years) and cheetahs, (over 100 cubs born since the early 80’s) and they have some of the largest herds of hoofed mammals in the country ? Only the mountain bike tours and Behind-The-Scenes tours get to go into the area where we will be seeing the animals. They aren’t on the public drive- thru route. ? Been doing the mountain bike tours since 1994 ? This place rocks for mountain biking, and there’s no where else in this country, and maybe the world, where you can ride your bike this close to animals like rhinos and cheetahs

Daily News Roundup May 24th – Texas Bicycling

Texbiker.net Posted on May 24, 2010 by Rick AnkrumMay 24, 2010

Dallas’ bicycle plan revisions may chart a new course
from www.txcn.com
Dallas is revamping its quarter-century-old Bike Plan with the hope that it will make it easier to convert from four-wheel transportation to two wheels – but there is rough road to cover before the city puts more seats in the saddle.

Officials are weighing all types of “bicycle-friendly” options, from bike lanes to more trails and traffic circles.

A workable accord needs to be reached from a diverse constituency that includes not only a deeply divided cycling community, but also some motorists who are intensely anti-bicycle. …

Warm and Dry – May 24th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 24, 2010 by Rick AnkrumMay 24, 2010

So far we have only had rain four times during the month of May. My yard is starting dry out but the St. Augustine grass is loving it.

This evening’s ride got a later start than I had planned. My carpool rider was laid off from work today and he stopped by to tell me about it. Hopefully he can find another job soon.

Wind (ESE 13 mph) and temperature (88 degrees) were not a major factor in riding tonight. The tailwind came in handy at times.

Today’s riding statistics:

  • miles = 22.36
  • riding time = 1:28:46
  • average pace = 3:58 min/mile
  • average speed = 15.1 mph
  • max speed = 20.2 mph
  • average cadence = 79.2 rpm
  • max cadence = 111 rpm
  • climb 147 ft., descend 147 ft., max elevation 90 ft.
  • May miles 495.82
  • YTD miles 1895.62

Days 278-294 – Denton, Texas  to Shreveport, Louisiana | The Path …
by Laura
Support the US Bicycle Route System … After a great week in Fort Worth, Texas, we headed north to the small town of Denton. We hadn’t planned to go up to Denton, but then folks kept telling us what a great place it is, that it’s like a “ mini Austin.” We rode north out of Fort Worth, through a few small towns, and reached Denton right before a storm blew through. We spent the evening with our hosts, Nick, April & Jessica, dining on Thai food and drinking beers over great …

Quandary delays leveling of bike lane
by Denton Record Chronicle
Officials at the University of North Texas and Denton City Hall are sending mixed messages about the reasons behind a decision to delay the removal of a raised lane along Avenue C — a project critics say may violate a university master plan.

City officials say they delayed the university project to demolish the raised lane, located near the Music Building on campus, over concerns the university didn’t have a city permit for a proposed loading zone. …
