About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Bicyclist killed in crash near Austin airport, medics say

By Kelsey Bradshaw | www.statesman.com

A bicyclist was killed in a crash early Monday near Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, Austin-Travis County EMS medics said.

Medics responded at 5:50 a.m. to the westbound lanes of the 1500 block of Texas 71, just east of U.S. 183, for the crash, which involved a vehicle and a bicycle.

An adult was pronounced dead at the scene, medics said.

Drivers should avoid the area, medics said.

Austin, TX Bicycle Accident Kills One on Highway 71

Michael Grossman | www.texas-wrongful-death-lawyer.net

Austin, TX — August 3, 2020, one person sustained fatal injuries following an accident where they were hit along Highway 71 while riding a bicycle.

Investigators with the Austin-Travis County EMS reported that the collision occurred along westbound lanes of the highway near Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.

Right now, the exact circumstances remain unclear. …

… Commentary
It’s not really clear what happened here, and the exact facts are going to change what comes next rather drastically. Early in the morning, police are likely looking into the most common factors, which are typically distraction, fatigue, and intoxication. It’s important to look into the less likely factors as well, but those factors will typically get the most attention. What makes things complex is the possibility that alcohol contributed to the crash. But why does that complicate things? …

621 Miles Biked in July 2020: This Dude Is on Fiyah!

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.com

Alright, alright, alright. I don’t literally mean on fire. But it is a quote from Matthew McConaghey as Woody Wooderson in the Austin-area film Dazed and Confused. Matt is apparently one hell of a dude, citizen, University of Texas at Austin professor (really!), and he happens to live up the highway from me. Oh yeah, I guess he won an Oscar or something for acting in Dallas Buyers Club. That’s all a seque, because alright is how I performed on the bicycle in July of 2020.

Don’t get me wrong — 622 is a great milestone (yes, a pun). I know this because I did about that much last month, too. Plus, I’m tired as …

North Texans take to bike trails as shut downs continue

By J.G. Domke | www.greensourcedfw.org

On a recent hot July day, The Porter family drove from Grapevine to bike in the shade at River Legacy Park in Arlington. Photo by J.G. Domke.

With Covid-19 still keeping folks out of the gyms and malls, many people are hitting the bike trails to get out of the house

According to a New York Times article in May, this is part of a nationwide biking boom, which is causing a severe bicycle shortage as global supply chains scramble to meet the demand.

“I have never seen anything remotely approaching this,” Ryan Zagata, president of Brooklyn Bicycle Company, told NYT. He said sales are up by more than …

Not Quite Average Yet in August – Splendora Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 3, 2020 by Rick AnkrumAugust 3, 2020

Wheels down at 10:06 AM and my Lynskey R300 bike started the bike ride on the “Kingwood – Splendora – Kingwood” route. My goal for August is 800 miles and today I biked 43.71 miles. With yesterday’s ride my total for August is 74.36 miles. I need to average 25.8 miles per day to reach that goal and my average now is 24.79 miles so I need to make up for missing August 1st to get back on track. A 200+ mile week will help.

Today marks the 6th time riding today’s route this year. 5 times I rode my Lynskey R300 bike and 1 time my Canyon Endurace bike. The average distance for those 6 rides is 43.16 miles putting today’s ride slightly above average.

8-3-2020 YTD Bike Rides Summary Today's Route

Finishing at 1:49 PM the weather was warming up and some clouds dotted the sky. Humidity was lower than last week as was the dew point making it feel not so hot even though the temperature was 94. With the light wind I was able to ride at a good pace getting my overall average speed up to 14.3 mph on the way back to Kingwood. Overall weather conditions: start 86 (79% humidity, 78.5 dew point), a few clouds, wind W 7 mph. Finish 94 (54% humidity, 75.1 dew point), partly cloudy, wind NW 8 mph.

As I neared Splendora a funeral procession came towards me at the cemetery. I stopped and waited for the cars to enter before riding on. A Liberty County Constable motorcycle officer pulled up beside as I waited after he escorted everyone to the cemetery. There is a brief clip in the video.

My Strava activity page says today was harder than my usual efforts.

August Biking Delayed Until Hot and Dry

Texbiker.net Posted on August 2, 2020 by Rick AnkrumAugust 2, 2020

I waited until the 2nd day of August to start biking due to rain yesterday. That allowed me to do some chores but puts me behind on reaching my 800 mile goal for August. Today the bike ride started at 1:27 PM and finished at 3:48 PM. The later start came after attending church. With a shorter time period to ride I chose the “Atascocita – Walden – E. Lake Houston Parkway” route going 30.65 miles. While this routes travels on the same roads that are part of other of my routes the last time I rode this particular route was February 16th, 2020. Today was the 3rd time in 2020.

After missing yesterday my week’s total came in at 187.18 miles, the second week in a row below 200 miles. I could’ve biked 15 miles yesterday but didn’t. The weather forecast for the coming week looks rain free which will help bike 200+ miles. A summary of the week’s rides.

8-2-2020 Week Bike Rides Summary ending 8-2-2020

Friday I received my warranty replacement Hero 7 Black camera from GoPro and today was the first ride to check it out. The ride was short but the temperature was 90 but the camera didn’t freeze. Tomorrow I will go longer to see if time and heat causes it to freeze. I hope not.

It felt cooler on today’s bike ride even though the temperature was 90. I think the lower humidity and dew point contributed to that. Weather: start 91 (63% humidity, 77 dew point), partly cloudy, wind variable 5 mph. Finish 90 (60% humidity, 74.7 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind W 4 mph. I thought with the later start I would feel the heat more but moving through the light breeze helped cooling.
