Horse Country 20K Time Trial - Aubrey, TX

June 28, 2007 By: Administrator Category: Calendar

July 28, 2007
9:00 amto12:00 pm

The TT will start from the Aubrey Intermediate school and run 6.2 miles West on Hwy 428 to the turnaround.  The road is moderate chipseal, but we make up for it with wide shoulders, no stoplights or signs, and a course that puts a premium on both aerodynamics and climbing skills.

Bike Paths, Will You Use Them?

June 19, 2007 By: Administrator Category: Commentary

The Christian Science Monitor asks this question. There is concern that some major money is being spent (Austin $250 million, Dallas/Fort Worth $900 million) for infrastructure that will not be used. While this is chump change compared to what is spent on roads for cars and trucks this is a large investment which may not attract the riders.

Like any transit route, the bike paths need a real destination in order to attract the riders. Houston did not spend any amount close to these numbers (and it shows) with little attraction to riders as far as I can tell.

What may interest me will be the proposed bike trails beside flood control bayous managed by the Harris County Flood Control Authority. We will have to wait to see if these ever happen.

Performance Bicycle Rolls Into Dallas

June 19, 2007 By: Administrator Category: News

Performance Bicycle, the nation’s most popular bicycle shop with over 70 stores across the country, announces its newest store will open in Dallas, TX in late June, 2007. The Dallas store will be the company’s fifth Texas store. “We’re opening our new store in Dallas because thousands of our internet & catalog customers in the area asked that we open a store near them and because this is a terrific cycling market, said Stuart Westland, Performance Bicycle’s Marketing Director. According to Westland, the new Dallas store complements the company’s Metroplex stores in Plano and Ft. Worth, and is part of their plan to open 100 new stores over the next five years.

Have you heard of “Ghost Bike Memorials”?

June 19, 2007 By: Administrator Category: Article

I spotted this article in The Daily Texan.

“White bicycles stand chained to trees and utility poles across Austin. Each represents a bicycle casualty, usually a fatal one.

The spectral bikes, a labor of love for bike messenger Ben Lynch and friends, stand to raise awareness amongst both cyclists and drivers. …”

Single Speed Bikes Are the Rage

June 16, 2007 By: Administrator Category: Article, Posts, Video

Lately there has an increased interest in single speed bikes. The ride experience is different from the 10/18/20 speed speedsters. Make Magazine has a video podcast that explains how to convert a bike from a multi-speed to a single-speed.

Firecracker 100 - Stephenville, TX

June 15, 2007 By: Administrator Category: Calendar

June 30, 2007
8:00 amto12:00 pm

All routes will start and finish at Tarleton State University (TSU). Start Time - 8:00 a.m.

All routes are on US Highways, Farm to Market Roads and well-maintained, paved County Roads. The routes are the same as the last few years except for a few areas where improvements have been made. Erath County roads consist of “ups” and “downs”. Most of the hills are not too long, but you’ll find some that go on for a while! And there’s even an occasional flat stretch, but they are few and far between. 10/26/43/62 mile routes.

What Do You Eat After A Ride?

June 15, 2007 By: Administrator Category: Article, Commentary, News

In the late 80’s one of my fellow bike riders proclaimed Pop Tarts the perfect ride food. He looked at the calories and fat content with the ease of use from the individual sleeve for each serving. I think this was before energy bars came on the scene. Also around that time The League of American Wheelmen fielded letters with the ideal formula for GORP. GORP was the name of granola, raisins and peanuts. (I can’t remember what the “O” was for.) I even took GORP on my very first century ride.

Then Wednesday I saw this article at Medical News Today: “Study: Cereal Aids Recovery After Exercise - Breakfast Cereal And Milk May Be Better Than Sports Drink”. Whole-wheat cereal with non-fat milk beats sports drink in my book as well. At rides they always have the worst tasting drink. I think they clear out whatever is overstocked.

If you read my bike tips page you will learn that one of my take-along snack for rides is animal crackers. Low fat and low priced. What else do you need to ask for?
