Texas Bicycling Blog and News Roundup for November 13th — 6 Comments

  1. Didn’t see the TV cameras when I rode on Saturday’s Soldier Ride, but that was the venue and the people who were there.

  2. Yes, it warmed up nicely, eventually. By the time I arrived and registered the windbreaker I’d brought was not needed. I had on a normal (not specific to cycling) thermal undershirt under my jersey and AeroTech’s full length padded tights (non-bib).

The sun was out and winds mild until late in the ride. By the first water stop (around 10 miles in) I removed the thermal undershirt. I was later wishing I had on my shorts but it wasn’t too terrible to have my legs covered. The wind could get pretty strong at times, but it had warmed up a lot from the ride I had done at home 3 days earlier where I was bundled up in all my cold weather gear the whole ride.

My regrets are few. Largely I had hoped for more financial support from my co-workers. I had two people who pledged that did not come through. Makes me tend to doubt any of the people who claim to be willing to do Tour de Cure in May will be giving me excuses come March for not signing up.

  3. Dressing for weather that changes substantially in a few hours is a problem. Layers helps but what do you do with the layers you remove. On a bike the cargo can mount up.

Charity rides can be a pain as far as raising money and the collecting it. That is why I don’t ride the MS150. The ride is great but the fund raising is a major pain. People say they ar going to do something and then do not follw through but this happens for many other things as well.

  4. Since I’m basically a one bike person my LHT is outfitted with a Topeak cargo rack and I have a large, expandable trunk that mates to that rack with their QuickTrack system. I left Powerbars and my tube of Chamois Butt’r in there. It is not that heavy when not fully loaded (sometimes stop off on the way home from work or gym at HEB) so I kept it on for the ride.

There had been some odd choices for this event out on the road. One woman in one of those pedal powered trikes and two guys with EliptiGo machines. Not sure I would ever try one of those, but they are interesting.

  5. You have the right gear for carrying stuff. I have used a similar setup in years gone by. Now I just sweat it out if I over dress. Maybe I will remove my leg warmers or the first outer layer because they are light and I can roll them up and put them in my jersey back pockets.
