Dodging Construction Bike Ride

A little earlier start today (10:44 am) because I stopped watching stage 7 of the TdF with 50.5KM to go with the plan of rejoining it after the bike ride. I chose the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route and rode 33.99 miles. I should’ve went a little farther to get 34+ miles but the Elemnt computer showed 34 miles so I thought I went enough. For the week I am at 180.47 miles and 396.88 miles for July. My goal for July is 800 miles.

Saturday (tomorrow) I plan on getting up and leaving on the bike ride by 7:30 am which will takes lots of effort on my part. The TdF will be on NBC instead of NBCSN and I have the DVR set to record and I will watch after my ride.

Weather during today’s bike ride: start 89 (64% humidity), partly cloudy, wind W 5 mph. Finish 90 (58% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind NW 5 mph. Before I paused watching the TdF there was a section where the peloton was split by 15+ mph wind and some top GC riders had to work hard to close the gap. No such problem on my ride with the wind a gentle breeze. Since I started earlier the temperature wasn’t up to the mid 90’s yet.

Biking through Woodridge Forest I had to work my way through the construction activity. A backhoe had a street almost blocked while they dug a hole for some utilities. Next a dump truck was depositing a load of dirt in the street in front of a home. And then a forklift was unloading bricks and mortar at a house under construction. The streets had mud from rain yesterday which we didn’t get though we are only 3 or 4 miles away.

Once I got my overall average speed up to 14.4 mph at Tavola I was able to maintain it until I got back into Kingwood at around 32 miles into the ride. I made a stop at the Checkout station in Porter at FM 1314 to refill my water bottle but they didn’t have a fountain machine like they did several years ago. I altered the route some and didn’t ride by the Stripes station on FM 1314. I did stop at the Circle K store at Northpark Drive and refilled the bottle with ice and water for the 7+ miles to the finish. Leaving there I rode west on Northpark Drive which I haven’t done in awhile. Normally I ride onto Northpark as I exit Oakhurst. Traffic can be heavy on Northpark at times as trucks go to the sand pits. From there I made my way to the finish at 1:16 pm, the earliest I finished this week.

When Lawson Craddock crashed on the opening stage of the Tour de France, soldiered to the finish alone and then found out he had a fractured scapula in addition to his cut up eyebrow, he could have dropped out. Ordinary July Bike Ride to Huffman

Nothing out of the ordinary on today’s bike ride. I left at 11:20 am biking the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman Extended” route for 35.44 miles. This puts the week at 146.48 miles and July at 362.9 miles. I chose this route to go a couple of miles more than the regular “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route. I watched stage 6 of the TdF before setting off.

Weather during the bike ride: start 90 (63% humidity), partly cloudy, wind SW 7 mph. Finish 92 (50% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind S 7 mph. It seems cooler than usual for July. By now I think we should be seeing some upper 90’s if not 100 degrees but I am not complaining.

The usual rest stop came at the Huffman Chevron where I ate a Clif Bar and drank some cold water while cooling down in the shade. I was there over 20 minutes because I had to restart the PowerPod when I left. The ride summary up to that point.

Leaving the Chevron I rode north on FM 2100. This took me past a building under construction that will have a Huddle House restaurant when it opens. I don’t know of another one in the Houston area.

The ride back to Kingwood  was a bout 12 miles from the Chevron and I finished the ride at 2:25 pm.

Trail Design and Construction Underway – Houston Bayou

Design of important trails in the downtown area is underway. Extending from Fannin Street all the way to McKee Street on the south bank of Buffalo Bayou, there are three separate projects being coordinated by BBP and the Houston Parks Board. The western most trail will be constructed in the lower floors of two Harris County buildings and on a property owned by Harris County Flood Control District. This portion will link up with a trail segment on what is now a parking lot at the corner of Austin and Commerce streets. From here, the trail alignment heads east where it will be constructed on property owned by CenterPoint Energy. It is expected that this trail will be completed by the end of the year, with the other two segments constructed in 2020.

East of downtown and US 59/69, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) recently broke ground on a trail that extends across the Houston Housing Authority’s Clayton Homes property. The $3.7 million project is a key missing link that will tie the trails described above to existing trails east all the way to Lockwood Drive. In addition to the trail, the project includes a pedestrian bridge that will link the north and south banks of Buffalo Bayou. A federal grant and $500,000 in private funds raised by BBP are making the project possible. Expect a ribbon cutting in early 2019.
