About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Importance Of Bike Safety

BikeHouston.org

Bicycle safety education is not often taken seriously in many car-centric urban areas, Houston is no exception. Currently, more people are looking for alternate options for efficient, safe, and cost-effective ways to move about. There are still viable low costs options for “people moving” that are fun, healthy, and safe given appropriate education and infrastructure. Bicycling is one such …

Goal!! No, Not the World Cup One Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 28, 2018 by Rick AnkrumJune 28, 2018

Goal!! No, not the World Cup one but me reaching my June mileage goal of 800 miles with today’s 34.33 miles boosting the month to 809.96 miles. With two more potential biking days I should add to that total.

The bike ride started at 10:18 am on the “Kingwood – SH 242 – Kingwood” route going north. The weather was great.

Home Weather Start

Home Weather Start

The PowerPod showed believable watts as I rode to SH 242 after making my way out of Kingwood. The light wind helped some as I set a nice pace pushing my average speed to 14.8 mph. At SH 242 the turn around took me west to the race track where I went left and back to the south bound service road. That is when the headwind became noticeable but I was able to keep my speed high enough to not loose the overall average speed.

Stopping at the New Caney Mobil station at FM 1485 just long enough to refill my water bottle I was back biking again still not having too much of a problem with the headwind. At Valley Ranch I turned west and the wind was a little stronger but still manageable. A slight reduction in effort came as I turned left from Valley Ranch Parkway into the Azalea District to get back to the south bound service road.

I stayed on the service road to Northpark Drive when I made a quick stop at the Circle K/Valero station for more water and ice.. Taking the old road back to the service road I continued south to Kingwood Drive making the u-turn. From there I rode through Kings Manor back into Kingwood. I finished the bike ride at 12:51 pm. Weather at the finish.

Home Weather Finish

Home Weather Finish

While my home weather showed a light breeze the airport weather reported 18 mph gusts which I think accounts for some slowness as I rode south to Kingwood Drive.

Airport Weather Finish

Airport Weather Finish

The humidity wasn’t too bad but I still put out a lot of sweat.

Interesting note about the power curve in the image below. For about the first 8 minutes the PowerPod showed some high watts output but then settled down to normal output. I learned that the PowerPod adjusts the tilt setting in that time period if it is different from the previous ride. I moved the PowerPod after the last ride and that is why the watts spike upward before the tilt was recalibrated.

No Drama Bike Ride to Huffman

Texbiker.net Posted on June 27, 2018 by Rick AnkrumJune 27, 2018

No drama on today’s bike with the PowerPod back to normal it seems. My watts seem lower than previous rides but I can adjust that.

Today’s route was the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” one for a total of 33.96 miles putting me 24.4 miles from my June goal of 800 miles. Tomorrow’s bike ride should put me over the top. I started at 10:08 am and finished at 1:02 pm, a little later than yesterday because I stopped at the Huffman Chevron for a 25 minute rest break. That was 21.86 miles into the ride. It was restful sitting in the shade with a gentle breeze slowly drying up the perspiration. No snack but I drank plenty of ice water.

Wahoo Summary Huffman Chevron

Wahoo Summary Huffman Chevron

Before the ride I aired up the tires to 100 psi and could tell the difference both in rolling resistance and bounce whenever I rode over a bump. It is hard to tell when to air up tires and my squeeze test is not very reliable. Both tires were about 25 psi low.

Weather at the start and finish from my home weather station.

At the start of the ride
At the finish of the ride

The temperature was a few degrees lower than yesterday’s ride which felt good. I thought over the ride it would get hotter.
